To want to eat some crunchy chalk?

demirose87 · 27/08/2017 09:52

I'm 34 weeks 4 days pregnant and for the last few weeks I've had the strong urge to eat a stick of chalk. I had the craving with my last pregnancy and didn't cave in but this time it's stronger than ever. I think it's the crunchy crumbly texture I need. I'm watching youtube videos of people eating natural chalk pieces and it makes my mouth water. What would be the worst that could happen if I ate some chalk? The only thing stopping me is the fear of harming my baby. But I am finding it so hard to not just cram some of my kid's chalk into my mouth. Confused

Pica. It's a thing.

Might indicate a mineral deficiency, probably doesn't.

Maybe try those hard chalky lollies? Or just chew the chalk and spit it out? It's unlikely to harm you/the baby.

But mention to dr in case of a deficiency.

These lollies

To want to eat some crunchy chalk?

I had Pica too OP and also for that crunch.

I ate refreshers....they ALMOST sorted out the urge. I also ate ice and ice lollies and had a strong urge to sniff FLash spray with bleach.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 27/08/2017 10:00

I was about to suggest those lollies, or the crumbly after dinner mints - might they work?

yawning801 · 27/08/2017 10:00

YY to refreshers!

minicheddars90 · 27/08/2017 10:00

Hi

My mum had this craving while she was pregnant with me, she was told it was some subconscious craving for calcium?

I turned out ok, mostly! Grin

May50 · 27/08/2017 10:03

What about Rennies indigestion tablets. They're chalky. (Assuming there's no advice on the side as not for pregnant women) but I'm sure I had these when I had indigestion and pregnant.

MrsOverTheRoad · 27/08/2017 10:08

Oddly enough, when DD was born, she toddled and began to eat the bloody wall plaster!

It was like she'd caught my craving in the womb! I had to take her to the GP and everything!

She grew out of it though.

emmyrose2000 · 27/08/2017 10:09

I know where you're coming from. I used to crave dry white concrete when I was pregnant with DC1. Wink

I used to sit on the couch watching TV and looking out at our patio and all I wanted to do was go out and eat a giant chunk out of the patio. So glad I didn't give into it though as I'm sure it wouldn't have done my teeth any good! Grin

Bluntness100 · 27/08/2017 10:12

Usually they say a craving indicates you are deficient in something. What is chalk, magnesium?

Not sure about the patio though....

RubyReins · 27/08/2017 10:12

I'm 35 weeks and have this too. Been chomping on the odd Rennies but I don't want the mint flavour. Been sniffing washing powder too...

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 27/08/2017 10:15

Could try those one of those hard chalky lollies.

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 27/08/2017 10:16

...that have already been mentioned Grin

toomuchtooold · 27/08/2017 10:17

Craving for crunchy stuff is sometimes a symptom of anaemia, might be worth getting it checked out. Be careful with the rennies because if it is iron deficiency, too much calcium can interfere with your iron uptake.

brayd · 27/08/2017 10:22

I ate a pack of chalk when I was about 11/12 after a dare from my brother .. let's just say it wasn't pleasant and I can't look at chalk now without feeling ill Envy

0hMyDayz · 27/08/2017 10:25

M&S Mint crumblies have a crunchy, chalky texture 😁

RubyReins · 27/08/2017 10:30

I'm definitely not anaemic - all good there. And it's only two or so Rennies that I have, I'm not gorging on boxes. The mint flavour is off putting right now. I did Google edible chalk earlier but Amazon Prime can't get it to me... Off for a hit of Persil now.

Lelly0503 · 27/08/2017 10:30

I'm 39 weeks and I want to eat washing powder. I practically inhale it every time I put a wash on. I also have a thing for crunching powders In a bag, like dishwasher salts or soda crystals. Every time I go into Tesco I go and crunch up all the bags of soda crystals on the shelf. I also have a similar thing with dust and wanting to eat large lumps of dust.

FledglingFTB · 27/08/2017 10:31

How about the chalky rock sticks you can get at the sea side. The texture makes me boke personally

demirose87 · 27/08/2017 10:31

Thanks for the lollipop suggestion I hadn't thought of those. I've been eating rennies and tums but I'm scared in case I go mad on them. I've got awful heartburn so could be why I've got this craving..

Edinburgh rock? Very chalk like and crumbles nicely- pity about all the sugar though!

demirose87 · 27/08/2017 10:41

I've just googled edinburgh rock, it looks like thats exactly what I need. There's a sweet shop in town that I'm hoping will have it or something similar.

RubyReins · 27/08/2017 10:44

You're a filthy tease Lelly. Will combine a squeeze the bag of soda crystals under the sink with a waft of washing powder. DH did ask me why I had been washing sheets and towels more frequently... That was partly due to a pest infestation but the aroma of detergents is a happy side effect.

I have easy access to Edinburgh Rock as I live there but the taste is minging. I have held my nose but it didn't really work. I have a history of GD although not this time so I am watching my sugar and CHO intake.

nomorebabiesyet · 27/08/2017 10:47

Leather for me in all 3 pregnancies

nomorebabiesyet · 27/08/2017 10:49

I had to buy leather fragrance and used to slice beef and dry it in the oven salted. It was heaven on earth!
