To not want everyone's home grown fruit & veg...

Yes, I know that I probably am BU and am lucky really, but please can I have a teeny rant first...

We have a fair few friends and neighbour's and some of DHs work colleagues who are amateur gardeners with veg plots and allotments. We also grow a few things ourselves - green beans, blueberries, apples etc.
I think this year has been a good year for produce so everyone seems to have more than they need, so they are offloading it all on us!!

DH went to see his parents and came back with huge tubs of blackberries and blueberries. He went to see a mate and came bag with a bagful of courgettes, marrows & green beans. We came back from shopping today and the neighbour has left a massive Primark bag of apples on our doorstep.
Thing is, it's always me that has to deal with them - washing, chopping, freezing and finding recipes to use them up in. DH just says 'hey, XYZ kindly gave us these' and dumps them in the utility room. Angry
I spent half a day peeling and freezing/ storing our own apples this week, I really don't want or need any more, so I asked DH to take them back and says thanks, but we have loads, but he said that would rude and refused.
Now I'm having to ring round my friends to see if anyone wants them, but they all have loads of their own too.... grrr!

My parents gave me a home grown cucumber earlier today.

You know the snozcumbers in The BFG? It's one of them. Warts and all.

It's in the salad drawer of the fridge. It'll have to wait until I'm mentally robust enough to eat it.

StarCrossdSkys · 26/08/2017 16:46

Why does anyone grow marrows? Nobody likes them. Also runner beans. Ok once in a while but they're one of my least favourite vegetables and I always end up with loads of the damn things. I'm afraid the apples from my tree rot. I make a couple of crumbles and that's it.

ginandlime · 26/08/2017 16:46

I thought I would be moving this year so didn't plant anything. I'd gladly be in your position at the moment! Can see how it gets tiring though!

ginandlime · 26/08/2017 16:48

I love Marrows! Runner beans too.
Just stew your apples starcrossd and then freeze, means you can chuck in a handful of sultanas, half a teaspoon of cinnamon and make a crumble in mid december.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 26/08/2017 16:48

Is there a food bank/shelter or similar in a town near you that could make use of them?

BubbleFrog · 26/08/2017 16:49

YABU.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 26/08/2017 16:49

Are marrows different in America?

In Dirty Dancing Baby is clearly carrying a marrow and not a watermelon.

It's been confusing me for over 20 years. Today is a good day to ask.

Floralnomad · 26/08/2017 16:50

I love marrow and runner beans , my sister grows both and it's excellent . We have an abundance of pears . Lots of people near us stick boxes of extra apples etc on their garden walls for people to help themselves.

Frouby · 26/08/2017 16:50

Yabu and yanbu.

Yanbu about the courgettes and marrows. We have an allotment and people are now avoiding me for fear of being presented with a courgette or marrow. I am sick of the sight of the bloody things. They are nice in a cake (lemon and courgette drizzle) but other than that we are using them for the sake of it.

Yabu about the other stuff tho. It's all nice stuff and whatever chopping/blanching you do now will be a few minutes of your life you claim back later when you start using it up.

It is annoying and time consuming tho.

fluffiphlox · 26/08/2017 16:51

Stick them on the compost and just say they were lovely. That's what I do with the horrible leathery lettuces we get from a member of the family.

Gentlygrowingoldermale · 26/08/2017 16:51

We've a small garden, grow very little but there's always a surplus. We've room for one of those plastic compost bins. Comes in useful!

Maelstrop · 26/08/2017 16:51

Bloody hell, OP, I'd be ecstatic, although I'm a lazy bitch who can't be arsed to peel and cook the apples I currently have and I'm not going to lie, I threw a load of blackberries in the freezer because I really can't be arsed. All veg would be massively welcome, though.

littlemisssweetness · 26/08/2017 16:56

Can I come be your neighbour? 😂 I'll take any unwanted produce of your hands!

StarCrossdSkys · 26/08/2017 16:56

All these poncy chefs professing to love 'seasonal eating'. Do they bollocks. No way are they munching through nothing but cabbages and pickles for 3 months of winter.

Pibplob · 26/08/2017 16:56

I wish! Would really help with the shopping bill!!

FlaviaAlbia · 26/08/2017 16:58

I bough this for apples last year after we had loads, it's worth its weight in gold www.lakeland.co.uk/13181/Apple-Master-Peeler-and-Corer?src=gfeed&gclid=CjwKCAjwuITNBRBFEiwA9N9YEImuQ-LZa9YHw8gK--RdimACDG3he--7m1GuWT7VIxQFWDI5UtHLfBoC0K4QAvD_BwE

It does apples in about 10 seconds. Then I cooked them and froze them so I could make crumble or whatever from the freezer. It was brilliant.

We haven't had as good a crop this year Envy

Grate courgettes, fry in butter and garlic then stir through pasta with loads of Parmesan.

That uses up at least 3.

Gwilt160981 · 26/08/2017 16:59

You'd be greatful if you was hard up.

StarCrossdSkys · 26/08/2017 17:01

gwilt Not really because of most of this stuff is inedible without other expensive ingredients added.

SongforSal · 26/08/2017 17:02

This reminds me of the time 3yrs ago Dp managed grow a zillion Courgettes. I haven't even looked at one since!

StarCrossdSkys · 26/08/2017 17:03

Poor people used to eat a lot of sweet puddings if they could get fruit. But that was instead of a savoury meal. Not recommended for health reasons.

MirabelleTree · 26/08/2017 17:05

People often don't grow marrows. They grow courgettes, take their eyes off them for 2 days and the fuckers turn into marrows .

OnlyTeaForMe · 26/08/2017 17:05

I think it's the fact at nobody asks first if we'd actually like some fruit & veg - it's just thrust at DH or left for us!
For the record, we're not destitute and the kids look well-nourished and healthy, so I don't think it's a pity donation !, 😂
This week I've made blueberry jam, courgette cake, various apple crumbles for the freezer, apple sauce (jars).
That's enough... no more please!
