To think that sandals are impossible if your feet are hideous?

I've got big, wide feet. With ugly, bent toes and MASSIVE big toes.

It's so annoying because I love shoes but in summer(It's late winter/early spring here in Oz) I struggle hugely to find a flattering style.

I have thickish ankles too...I'm a dress size 12 and happy with my weight and figure but just hate the way my feet and ankles never look nice in summer.

What shape/style is best for ugly, wide feet please? I also need a low wedge or not much of a heel as I'm shit at walking in anything high!

Sorry can't help but will lurk with interest as I'd love to wear sandals and I too have hideous feet - wide, flat, veiny and bunions.

I'd really like someone to design comfy strappy footwear that hides the lumps and bumps with distracting flowers or something!

Namechangetempissue · 23/08/2017 13:57

If they are that awful (I'm sure you probably think they are much worse than they are!) i would probably avoid an open toe and go for a classic flat. No ankle straps of any kind, they only look good on a super skinny ankle and cut the leg off making it look chunkier.

captainfunderpants · 23/08/2017 13:58

Have you tried Saltwater sandals? I have flat wide feet. They are the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn and they stretch and mould to fit your feet. They also have a closed in sandal - called Shark - which might be a good option if you really don't want to show off your toes too much. A good pedicure helps too .

MrsOverTheRoad · 23/08/2017 13:58

Name classic flats show loads of toe in my experience. And "peep toe" sandals look very elderly...theyr'e always pointed in shape too...no use for wide feet.

Good advice here

MrsOverTheRoad · 23/08/2017 13:59

Captain I haven't but I bet we can't get them here in Oz. :(

Classic flats as in closed toe

MrsOverTheRoad · 23/08/2017 14:01

Captain I've just seen you can buy them here! But they're very flat aren't they? Don't they hurt to walk in for any distance?

Namechange but then that's a shoe surely? Not a sandal?

Living in Australia you need sandals. Or you're horribly uncomfortable very quickly in summer.

You can get a lattice designed closed toe so air is circulating but the toes are covered. Very pretty and summery.

The80sweregreat · 23/08/2017 14:02

I bought a nice pair out of Clarks back in May and worn them all summer ( its been hot enough in the UK to do this last few months in the south east) they are so comfortable and hide most of my horrid odd shaped feet.
it took me ages to find a pair as i cannot wear heels and most shoes kill my feet - these are just perfect. i hate shoes normally, but boots i adore.
i have fairly slim ankles and feet, but the rest of me isnt! i have a strange hammer toe too!

Similar to this?

I have Keens. They are so comfortable and cover my ugly feet.

MrsOverTheRoad · 23/08/2017 14:05

Oh I like those Namechange! What did you google to get them up?

I also like the Saltwater ones Captain mentioned! Lots of nice ones there and quite affordable too!

I bet your feet aren't hideous. I bet they're just feet. If you need sandals to feel comfortable in the heat, just get some that fit and that you like the look of. Noone is going to recoil in horror. Noone will even take a second glance at your perfectly ordinary feet-shaped feet.

Morphene · 23/08/2017 14:16

avoidance is a shit reason to do anything...it just confirms that your fears were justified.

How about wearing any shoes you fancy and telling your low self-opinion to do one?

Life is waaaaay too short to give a crap about exactly how your feet look in certain sandals.

I mean can you imagine yourself on your deathbed thinking 'well at least I never let people see my feet in unflattering shoes'.

Namechangetempissue · 23/08/2017 14:16

Google lattice closed toe sandals OP. They are pretty aren't they! Good luck with your hunt, my best friend has large wide feet so I know how hard it can be to find a flattering style!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/08/2017 14:23

Pavers has a huge selection for wide feet,I don't know if they deliver outside the UK but worth a look.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 23/08/2017 14:33

I disagree about no ankle straps, and actually find them really flattering (and I have chunky short legs). Art shoes and el Naturalista have lots of closed toe options, I find the soles quite light and comfy too. I mostly just wear Birkenstock rio sandals, and whack some nice polish on my stumpy toes Grin.

Brittbugs80 · 23/08/2017 15:53

I only ever wear Saltwater a or Birkenstocks.

Saltwater are mega comfy. I wore them and walked round London for two days in them.

You can also swim in them, wear them in the sea and put them in the washing machine!

captainfunderpants · 23/08/2017 17:33

MrsOverTheRoad no pain at all. They are hands down the MOST comfortable sandals I have ever worn. I have about 6 pairs Smile.

If you get pain, it's possibly because you're not used to very flat shoes, so I would recommend slowly building up the amount you wear them and maybe doing some foot strengthening exercises. You can buy a roller to put under your foot too which helps. I had really bad plantar fasciitis a few years ago so went through all of that - couldn't wear completely flat shoes for ages - had to wear trainers with quite a chunky sole/heel for about 6 months until the PF was under control.

topcat2014 · 23/08/2017 17:36

I am sure even your 'ugly' feet will be better looking than my (male) feet - and I still manage to wear flip-flops for example - no-one runs away to be sick!

Why not try some anyway - I am sure you will get used to it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/08/2017 17:38

Completely flat shoes aren't good for feet according to my physio- as bad as heels!
