Shocked that hairdresser cancelled my appt because I was late!

1st time at a new hairdressers this afternoon. Appointment was at 4:15pm for a cut and blow dry. I work 20 mins away, left in plenty of time but there had been an accident and so major traffic delays. I ended up arriving at the salon 8 mins late to be told by the stylist that she wouldn't be able to do my hair now, because she had another client at 5pm"and the turnaround is very tight".

I was almost speechless - never had that response before on the (rare!) occasions over the years when I have been a few minutes late.

It got worse. I was desperate to have a haircut so suggested that we forget the blowdry and I just have a dry cut. "We don't do that" . "Well, why not do a wet cut? That way, there is still plenty of time, since you won't be blow drying my hair, before your next client"

"We don't do that"

.??????????????.

I think this is not only ridiculous but completely unreasonable or is it me?

I have emailed the owner in advance of posting a public review to give her a chance of responding. In the meantime, I have now booked with another salon for a couple of days time (checked their policy - "we wouldn't cancel an appointment unless a client was at least 15 mins late")

Not only do the first salon have a very disgruntled customer who will certainly not recommend them, but they have lost my business for the next 4/5 years, probably. I was looking for a replacement for my lovely hairdresser of the last 7 years who has left for Scotland. So pretty naff commercial decision as well.

Differently to how I did (fat fingers!!)

persianpeach · 24/08/2017 20:53

I don't think YABU I would be bloody annoyed! The hairdresser is being an arse IMO. I think you're right in emailing to complain, then I would definitely leave a public comment. They were uncompromising and difficult there is no getting away from that. Name and shame then find somewhere else.

MissJF · 24/08/2017 21:02

Is this really worth asking the publics opinion.
You were late, you lost your slot... moving on!

GetOutOfMYGarden · 24/08/2017 21:05

Asked my hairdresser about this today (I was right on time, btw!) and she's said she's had to turn people away for the same reason. For a 45 minute appointment, 8 mins late is nearly a fifth of your appointment gone. She won't send someone out with their hair wet because the people walking out of her salon are advertisements for her business and wet hair looks shit.

ChilliBanana · 24/08/2017 21:26

As someone who works a 12 hour shift with tight back to back appointments, the people who turn up late and assume they can still be seen make my blood boil. Yes, shit happens to all of us and I always try to still see everybody, but it's the expectation that it doesn't matter if they are a 'few' minutes late. Yes it bloody does. It means my lunch break disappears, I finish late, and all the people at the end of the list moan about me running late.
YABU.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2017 21:34

CB - NHS by any chance? I have ten minute slots. If someone is a few minutes late then starts with "I have a couple of things to discuss" I point out I can't deal with a problem in 3.5 minutes. I'd have thought there's more leeway in a 45 minute haircut appointment but maybe I'm just patronising and jealous of their time.

MrsColinJackson · 24/08/2017 21:49

I think appointment slots need to be kept to and I admire them for not compromising their standards, I have been on the receiving end of this as a customer. My appointment was at 4pm, the hairdresser said they were running a little late, I thought ok 10-15 mins no probes. However 45 mins later I said that I was sorry and I could hang around any more and was told going to shampoo you in a moment, she indicated to the lady who she was just finishing off that she'd waited ages to be done to, th lady let slip that she was the hairdressers sil and only paid. £5 and then left. I was so cross, she'd slipped in her sil got paid a fiver and knocked a regular customer back 45 mins and seemed amazed that I wasn't impressed and left, I didn't go back.
My life is just as busy as the next persons and to be expected to hang on that long and for it to be OK was not on, at least ops hairdresser did not risk this happening her other clients op clearly unhappy but the alternative could have been a few other clients unhappy which could loose her more income and spread more of a bad word.

Sparklyglitter · 24/08/2017 22:02

I've been kept way longer than 8 minutes for a hair appointment when I've been on time and not complained as I know there are times when we are all a few minutes late. Good customer service would be to keep customers happy and still keep things on an even keel! Sorry unreasonable of salon!

Adnerb95 · 24/08/2017 22:09

Well I'm off to the new, replacement appointment in the morning. It is just a 5-10 minute drive and the appointment is at 9am.

I will be off to bed in a moment, to be sure of being up and ready for the off at 8:30am That way, I can arrive at the salon at least 20 minutes early. Should be OK, yeh? Wink

You're giving them another chance? Why the desperation?!

JBEM4 · 24/08/2017 22:13

For those that think the salon/stylist decision was unacceptable you have clearly never worked in a salon.

Every time a client is late it has a knock on effect which makes the next client late etc etc. This can mean that the stylist/therapist sometimes doesn't get a break as they're constantly playing catch up.
The usual exception to this rule is if there's a gap after the slot the client is late for and I'm sure the OP would have been advised if this was the case.

That being said to not call the salon and let them know is a little rude and disrespectful.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/08/2017 22:19

Derailing slightly here, but I really don't get this bit about salons insisting on a blow dry. I agree in most cases blow dried hair looks better. Mine doesn't, it looks bloody awful and falls much better if it dries naturally. Surely as the customer it's up to me what's done to my hair? What are they going to do, lock me in the salon and refuse to let me leave until they they've dried my hair?!

Luckily my hairdresser is reasonable and doesn't insist on a blow dry but so many salons seem to.

TiggerSnooze · 24/08/2017 22:46

I'm going to be in the minority and sit on the fence on this one ;)
8 mins is borderline I reckon (and I'm generally late for everything so I know how late it's normally possible to be without it causing an issue) so I think she was reasonably justified in deciding against. That said, she does sound like she was very silly in the way she dealt with your proposed solution and obviously deserves to lose your business as a result.
Don't overdo the bad review but I think it's fair to say that they are 'unaccommodating'...

welshbutenglish · 24/08/2017 22:56

Disappointing I know, but you have to admit, you were late and it doesn't matter what the reason was. Bad form to leave a negative review because of that. If everyone was 8 mins late, say she had 8 appointments that day, by the end of the day she would be running about an hour behind. Why should the clients after you put up with that?

KoolKoala07 · 24/08/2017 23:05

8 mins is a massive amount of time when working on an appointment basis. It really isn't 'only 8 minutes'. It really screws your over when customers are late. It's even worse when they walk in and you get no apology.

StrangeLookingParasite · 24/08/2017 23:52

people who are habitual latecomers which it sounds like you are, are the worst

Oh read the fucking thread.

Did you call them? Did you apologise profusely?

Gosh, if you RTFT you would know.

We are professional not just people that play with hair all day.

Get over yourself.

Why didn't you call and explain your situation?

Because, as she has already explained she was driving, and it is illegal to use a mobile phone when driving.

You're giving them another chance? Why the desperation?!

No. She is not. Perhaps reading her posts would help.

Samwarner42 · 24/08/2017 23:55

Generally in my experience salons will usually cut you 10-15 mins slack for being late but no more as it puts them behind for the day which is not fair on other clients. Also some places choose not to do dry cuts. I think this is something to do with making sure you have a totally accurate hair cut. I think turning you away after 8 mins is a little strong and they could have possibly been a little more diplomatic but it does put the stylist under pressure to wash, cut, blowdry, style, take your bill and clean their section ready for next customer and ensure you are happy with cut, products, future booking etc...this does happen. Just my opinion x

Samwarner42 · 24/08/2017 23:58

I think its because most hairdressers finish your cut and do the shaping when its dry. So by not drying it and getting the chance to do that means they havent finished the cut. I think that's it...Hmm

LadyWithLapdog · 25/08/2017 00:02

SLP, why are you so angry? OP said she has a replacement appointment. I understood that to mean at the same place.

MFR3 · 25/08/2017 00:15

YANBU and some of the comments on here are ridiculous

howrudeforme · 25/08/2017 00:18

I have massive hair. I've lost loads over the last few years but, even so, it's still huge and my current hair cutter couldn't just fit me in, i ensure I make my appointments on time as it's quite a bit of work for him.

MFR3 · 25/08/2017 00:21

I must remember to get up and leave the next time my hairdresser leaves me waiting 8 mins for my appointment next time

StrangeLookingParasite · 25/08/2017 01:25

Less angry than frustrated at the arrogance of so many posters coming in at the end of a thread having not bothered to read even the op's posts.

Adnerb95 · 25/08/2017 06:52

Thank you strange !

I amazed at the posters - not just on this thread but on MN generally who:

*fail to RTFT
*fail to read OP's updates
In fact, they often:
*fail to read or comprehend the OP in full.

Reading comprehension not taught in schools now?

If you called then to let them know you would be late then they are being harsh.
If not, then I wouldn't kick up a fuss. I think more than 5 mins late for anything is disrespectful.
