to think that a size 12-14 is not "Extra Large"?

I have been thinking about trying something new exercise-wise when the school holidays finish and was thinking about Crossfit.

Just for background, I am way too fat - about a size 20, but have a lot of gym experience of all kinds of exercise, so would not be daunted by these classes - I liked the sound of it.

On the website they say it is "the ideal exercise programme for anyone, regardless of age or experience." So far so good...

I happen to look at the linked "Boxshop.me" merchandise website and was looking at the T-shirts. To be clear, I in no way expected them to have one to fit me currently. BUT..

This is their sizing chart:

S =size 6, M = size 8-10, L = size 10-12, XL = 12-14, XXL = 14-16

Due to my big boobs even at my thinnest and fittest (and I have been very fit) I would not fit in a top below size 16. So however hard I worked there, I would never be anything less than XXL in their opinion?

AIBU to find this a bit depressing for somewhere that purports to be for anyone to come and get fit and for it to put me off going?

Exactly the same experience with the Selfish Mother tops Madam - the XXL is tiny!

GallicosCats · 22/08/2017 23:09

I think these tiny sizes are aimed at teenagers and not their 40-plus parents. If you look at the pattern sizes for dressmaking you see that the so-called 'standard' is for 'Misses' sizes, i.e. young women who haven't had kids yet, and these (artificial) proportions are what ready-to wear clothing was originally based on. They bear no relation to reality, of course.

Whathaveilost · 22/08/2017 23:15

I'm 12-14, and I certainly don't consider myself to be L or XL
I'm the same size and I do consider myself to be L or sometimes XL!

They're made to fit the market that sells.

Most people who do sports and are very active are probably on the smaller side so brands will tend to shift towards it, with the exception of some cheaper bands. I wonder if that's because when people start exercising they don't want to spend as much so they buy the cheaper lines, which tells the company what's selling etc.

E.g. Some walking clothes I find are tailored to fit post children ladies/peoplr who arent very active but enjoy going for afternoon walks with the kids so I buy my walking trousers from a brand that is smaller cut and sized for a smaller athletic build. The brand I prefer (sadly) costs an arm and a leg, but that's probably because it's used lots by people who are very active and who want to pay for the details of design.

Yeah, I'm a 12-16 on top & I think I am almost XL... What would be XL if no one was overweight, anyway.

Brainwashed · 25/08/2017 20:14

shopping I go to crossfit 3-4 times per week...different people every time though there are people who have regular slots. So friendly and encouraging to everyone and every ability. There's lots of stuff I used to struggle with that I can do much more easily now.

SuperBeagle · 25/08/2017 20:21

YABU.

They're not being drawn into vanity sizing, that's all.

Balletmummy25 · 25/08/2017 20:25

I'm a size 12-14
5 ft 8ish
10 stone
I'm not XL
Just have big boobs and hips 😂
I'm always shocked how many shops I struggle in !

blackteasplease · 25/08/2017 20:27

Zara is like that! I'm 10-12 and need a large in there.

MelsMam · 25/08/2017 20:34

6-8 XS, 8-10 S 10-12 M, 12-14 M-L, 14-16 L, 16-18 XL, 18-20 XXL.

YANBU, people have a range of different, which has nothing to do with being fat. That sizing chart is bonkers.

MelsMam · 25/08/2017 20:35

People have a range of different builds

Is thay not in their young adult range though?

Zara I find like H&M. Their ladies stuff is a true fit (I'm XS-S size 8) but then in their TRLAUFIC / Divided ranges I'm easily a Medium / size 12.

I think those lines run small because they're more aimed at the teen/pre teen market (even though some of their stuff is lovely, and I'm not close to being a teen).

thenightsky · 25/08/2017 22:37

I've given up looking at labels and carry a tape measure instead. I look at what looks 'me' sized and measure it from armpit to armpit. Try it on. Buy if it fits and looks nice. Don't give a fuck what the random number in it is.

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 22:38

I think size 12 is a L+ especially if sizes start at 6! I say that as a size 12.
I've never been bigger than a 12 but some shops with generous sizes etc I fit into a 10.

The average British woman is a size 16.
That doesn't mean a size 16 is desirable or "healthy" (I'm aware you can be unhealthy and a size 8 too!)
My bmi means I'm overweight... I don't see how a size 12 is small/medium etc. I'm overweight Confused
*im aware tall women can be a size 10-14 and be a healthy weight, but most women aren't that tall with the average height being something around 5ft 2 or 5ft 3.

blackteasplease · 25/08/2017 22:45

I don't know about the different ranges. I find their L stuff comes up as about a 12, or what might be a 10 in a more expensive shop.

blackteasplease · 25/08/2017 22:47

I think H and M comes up small compared to some other shops too. The more expensive the shop the more flattering the sizing! Grin

Some times I take a Zara M but it depends more on the style than the range (or so i thought)
