to think that a size 12-14 is not "Extra Large"?

Shoppingwithmother · 21/08/2017 19:13

I have been thinking about trying something new exercise-wise when the school holidays finish and was thinking about Crossfit.

Just for background, I am way too fat - about a size 20, but have a lot of gym experience of all kinds of exercise, so would not be daunted by these classes - I liked the sound of it.

On the website they say it is "the ideal exercise programme for anyone, regardless of age or experience." So far so good...

I happen to look at the linked "Boxshop.me" merchandise website and was looking at the T-shirts. To be clear, I in no way expected them to have one to fit me currently. BUT..

This is their sizing chart:

S =size 6, M = size 8-10, L = size 10-12, XL = 12-14, XXL = 14-16

Due to my big boobs even at my thinnest and fittest (and I have been very fit) I would not fit in a top below size 16. So however hard I worked there, I would never be anything less than XXL in their opinion?

AIBU to find this a bit depressing for somewhere that purports to be for anyone to come and get fit and for it to put me off going?

If it's American sizes, then I think it's pretty reasonable. For UK I would generally expect a small to 8 / 10 or 8-10.

Having said that, I do think there's a stigma around buying 'large' that exists for women in a different way from men. I think it's kind of expected that a slim 6' man could be L depending on build and a 5' 6" man a S without any conversation about 'fatness'.

Wall balls suck, well... balls !

I nearly died doing a 50 rep split jerk because I refused to break and do a 5 wall ball fine Grin

Crossfit rocks

Shoppingwithmother · 21/08/2017 20:35

I quite like the look of wall balls - I may soon find I'm wrong about that though!

It is amazing and also humbling how difficult many of the movements are but one thing I really love about Crossfit is how truly scalable the classes are. You can get a really effective workout no matter what your level and progress is obvious

Really hope you enjoy it, I love it

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 21/08/2017 20:51

I went to Sports Direct at the weekend. Of all the women's sports leggings in there, there were only three size 16-18 (XL). I am right in between those sizes but they were too small Blush Makes exercising to lose weight tricky.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 21/08/2017 20:51

That was Adidas btw.

PencilsInSpace · 21/08/2017 20:54

Ideally we should all be looking in the mirror, naked and concentrating on how much body fat we are carrying and being honest about our activity levels, nothing else matters.

That is the most dismal thing I have ever read and it doesn't even solve the problem. Can you explain how that would help us find clothes that fit?

Shoppingwithmother · 21/08/2017 21:00

Thank you, Pebbles, you and Gwenneh have reinspired me to start 😀

Pebbles17 · 21/08/2017 21:04

yay!

Ollivander84 · 21/08/2017 21:04

What Pencils said. Looking in the mirror doesn't change the fact that someone might need size whatever clothing for now
I have two dresses from ASOS, one is a size 14, one is a size 22 Confused and the 22 is from the curve range so should be bigger in size anyway never mind its 4 sizes bigger than I am!
Some of the sports brands do plus size, I think Nike do
I like this concept - pick the measurements that match you and the model is your size

Ollivander84 That website....this is a revelation! I think you've just made my day!

Shoppingwithmother · 21/08/2017 21:24

I love that Ollivander......could I get away with an "It's leg day, bitch" top on the school run?

I really don't understand why people get so worked up about sizes. My super slim super healthy stunning friend wears much bigger sizes than fat-arsed me. She is 6 ft tall (litterally), I am short but not so slim.

MaidOfStars · 21/08/2017 21:29

Sportswear can be bonkers sizing. I'm a massive leggings hoarder and measure 24/34 waist/hips, UK 4-8 (brand dependent). I recently bought M from one retailer Confused

Jellybean85 · 21/08/2017 21:31

If it helps I've been doing Crossfit for a few years, I adore it and we have all shapes sizes and ages!! I've visited other Crossfit venues too and would say it's the same in those venues too.

Don't overthink the clothing most people are just wearing normal gym
Gear!!

Ollivander84 · 21/08/2017 21:35

This is international but good

Nike plus size

Sainsbury's have stuff in activewear up to a 22, and also 25% off at the minute

There's a few others I'll post if I think of them

SheepyFun · 21/08/2017 21:39

I'm a UK size 16, and in outdoor clothing/sports shops, I routinely have to buy the largest clothing available. I'd be the first to admit that I'd benefit from losing weight (though my bmi would suggest I'm healthy), but it's pretty offputting, especially when things are labelled S(8)/M(10)/L(12)/XL(14)/XXL(16) - not many people would look at me and think XXL. I can at least find clothes that fit - but if you were larger and wanting to do something about it, you'd be put right off starting. OP, you have my sympathy.

Aashna7 · 21/08/2017 22:16

I'm a size 8-10 but reckon I need the gym more than most to tone up (45 now). I always tend to buy small as I'm 32B and many things look baggy round the chest / shoulders. Still there do seem to be a lot of much more petite people than me around. They must buy XS or petite ranges.
I would say 4-6 XS, 8-10 S, 12-14 M, 14-16 L and so on - that's if they really have to use those categories.
I have a friend who I work out with who is probably a size 14 but super-toned in way it would take me years to achieve. Don't let stupid sizes deter you!

Nicknacky · 21/08/2017 22:21

shopping I do crossfit and it's amazing. There is always alternatives I.e step ups rather than box jumps.

We had a couple at ours who have lost 25 stones between them. They are amazing.

It will be hard, maybe intimidating but when you find your self doing something you couldn't do a month ago, it's great!

Shoppingwithmother · 22/08/2017 22:26

Just come back to say thanks for your encouragement, Crossfitters - I have contacted them to arrange my induction!

As an aside to your question, do join crossfit. It is such a welcoming and supportive community. It has changed my life. Happy to answer any questions if needed :)

Shoppingwithmother · 22/08/2017 22:35

Thank you 😊

I do actually! How many times a week to most people do it? Do you usually do it with the same people each time or just whoever turns up?
And were there many exercises that were impossible to start off with?

Hope that's not too many!

Notevilstepmother · 22/08/2017 22:40

Have fun.

And size 12 is not L.

DreamingofItaly · 22/08/2017 22:47

I wear a size 18 dress, size 12 jean (bloody boobs) and do CrossFit. It blinking rocks!! Wall balls are hideous and awesome all at once!

When it comes to the clothes sizing, ignore it. My gym it's all down to where they purchase the t shirts from, so its manufacturer shit sizing (trainer offered me some tshirts in XL recently, er yes, if I want to Hulk them!). Ignore that rubbish and go to it!!
