To think giving ds my old iPhone for his birthday was simple until the family sharing Apple ID, iCloud stuff has put me off!

iTunes, totally confuses me.

I've only ever used it in its basic form.

I have an old iPhone sitting doing nothing. Yes, I don't HAVE to give him the phone but it seems the right time, Birthday coming up to.

Will need to set it up with his own number and on a phone package I've not looked into yet but it's this bloody iTunes which puts me off.

What I don't want is ds being able to access my messages, emails etc I don't want him to be able to access my music, want it completely separate.

AIBU to think that Apple should just simplify the whole system for under 13's (ds is almost 11)

If not could you please share with me how you've managed this. I will be very grateful.

Do a factory reset on the phone and when you start it back up, set it up with a new apple ID, one of his own.

You'd have to google but I seem to remember when I did the same I had to take the gift iPhone off from iCloud or something as well as doing the factory reset

TickedOff · 21/08/2017 14:28

It might be easier buying an android phone at this rate Grin

Morifarty, I wish it was that simple.

Dixie, from the info I've skimmed through this morning it seems you need a credit card to set up a child ID? My debit card is linked to my Apple account.

Why is it not that simple? What's stopping you from giving him his own Apple ID? (Genuine question, not being snarky.)

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 21/08/2017 14:33

Why are you saying it isn't as simple as what Morifarty says?

That's what I did recently when I gave a relative my old iPhone. Worked a dream.

lunar1 · 21/08/2017 14:33

Set up his own Apple ID, attach your card and don't give him he Apple ID password. This is what I did. Do not set up finger print recognition! You can even set up with a little used account with no money in.

happymumof4crazykids · 21/08/2017 14:33

It's easy! You don't share with them on family sharing. You can turn sharing off. Also you set it so they have to ask your permission for anything. Any downloads/apps you have to authorise.

peachgreen · 21/08/2017 14:33

You have to put in the Apple ID password to buy any apps so you can just not give DS the password.

FloatingCamel · 21/08/2017 14:34

I did this for the kids morifarty is right. Otherwise it'll be a duplicate of your phone. If you add them to family account you won't have to pay for apps again for them.

happymumof4crazykids · 21/08/2017 14:34

But they do have tiger own Apple ID!

Katinkka · 21/08/2017 14:34

It's not difficult in the slightest. New Apple ID is all that's needed.

AlternativeTentacle · 21/08/2017 14:36

It is that simple. Just factory reset. My DSD has my old iphone and no issues.

RhiWrites · 21/08/2017 14:36

Yes, it is simple. Call AppleCare if you're confused and they'll talk you through it.

zeeboo · 21/08/2017 14:36

It is that simple.

ilovegin112 · 21/08/2017 14:37

I've set up my sons, niece and mums iTunes account none of them bar mine has needed a debit or credit card, I set them all up with their own iTunes accounts

TickedOff · 21/08/2017 14:37

Because he's under 13 he has to go onto family sharing via my iTunes account but I don't necessarily want him to be able to have free access to my music etc

It would be much easier if I could set him up with his own email account etc but if dc are under 13 you can't do this.

sirfredfredgeorge · 21/08/2017 14:37

but an 11 year old cannot sign up to an apple id, as the OP has suggested doing it properly it attaches to a family group.

Of course you could just lie about ages.

peachgreen · 21/08/2017 14:38

Ohhh that's interesting, I didn't know that.

TickedOff · 21/08/2017 14:39

I think I've read so much today I've totally confused myself Confused

Make a genius bar appointment if you're near an Apple store and get them to do it for you.

TickedOff · 21/08/2017 14:40

Thanks SirFred, this is why it's more complicated.
