To report her for tax evasion?

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:32

I know of someone who is making around £1k a week, but hardly declares any of her income (she doesn't pay any tax at all so declaring less that £10k of it). She also claims tax credits.

I don't particularly like this person and am tempted to report her. Problem is, pretty much all the money she receives is in cash, so is there any way that the HMRC would actually be able to prove or disprove what she's earning?

Is she a hooker?

Is she self employed or limited company? I run a limited company so it looks like I'm making lots of money some times but others I don't. My turnover is quite big but profit less so due to all my costs.

CastIronCookware · 20/08/2017 18:04

if i could be assured that HM Government were using all of our taxes wisely and efficiently then i would take a different view but sadly they are not. They squander and waste as if its a bottomless pit

I assume you're an opposition front bencher who has formulated an alternative manifesto?

ijustwantfiveminutespeace · 20/08/2017 18:55

What will you do if she figure out she knows it was you that reported her.
Is she a prostitute? Did your partner go visit her?
How can you be100% sure of your facts? Do you live with her?

Needmoresleep · 20/08/2017 19:06

I reckon she is an 11+ tutor!

I remember a group of Kingston mums at a coffee morning working out how much the tutor had earned for group sessions. Cash/word of mouth business.

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 20/08/2017 19:10

Meh, report her. We all have taxes to pay, its shit but that's the way it is. Death and taxes.

Binkybix · 20/08/2017 19:18

hear you @ mintychoc and if i could be assured that HM Government were using all of our taxes wisely and efficiently then i would take a different view but sadly they are not

This is such a bullshit justification. Any given person is never going to agree 100% with all HMG spend. Do we just stop paying our taxes when the party we didn't vote for is in power? At least own your choice for what it is!

MollyHopps · 20/08/2017 19:33

Report. Regardless of your feelings she is wrong not to pay tax.

Also, if you are willing to PM me what she does for a living to make £1K a month...... Wink

Mrsgingermum · 20/08/2017 21:07

Report her, tax evasion is wrong.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 20/08/2017 21:10

Yep. I would report.

ForalltheSaints · 20/08/2017 21:13

If you are 100% certain and especially given the tax credits claim, then yes. Why you know of the tax credits claim sounds strange, unless it has been told to you.

GabsAlot · 20/08/2017 21:14

lts all not pay it coz th govrnmnt squandr it- im starting tomorrow

minipie · 20/08/2017 21:15

Haven't read full thread

I would report yes. Every person or business who evades tax means the rest of us have to be taxed more heavily to make up the shortfall, and/or less available to spend on public services.

I slightly wonder if those saying don't report are tax evaders themselves

I'd only report if you can be anonymous though - not worth risking repercussions

goose1964 · 20/08/2017 21:17

It's people like that that cause the NHS to be in the state it is, why there's not enough money for benefits etc . I'd report her for not paying her share when other people are

Ketchup123 · 20/08/2017 21:20

Nobody likes a rat.

Tiddler7 · 20/08/2017 21:22

Are you people serious??? Your taxes are going for her Tax Credits, rather than for people that really need it, and your advice is to leave her to continue?

PoorYorick · 20/08/2017 21:22

Tax evaders are rats.

Ketchup123 · 20/08/2017 21:25

I'm not sure you know what rat means - like a snitch

priscillap · 20/08/2017 21:26

Regardless of people's morals on here this woman is committing a criminal offence by not declaring her income. I too am self-employed and declare every bit, even though my sister in law laughed at me when I said this, as she said 'no-one declares all their income.' (she is also self-employed) I told her I do because my previous job was working in the Crown Court. I would report someone that I knew was earning income and claiming benefits - and I feel no guilt or moral superiority either way - I just feel it is unfair to all of us who pay our fair share of taxes, and more so those people who try to manage on the pittance from benefits because of circumstances beyond their control (in this I mean the genuine ones not the layabouts)

PoorYorick · 20/08/2017 21:26

I know what 'rat' means. It means a snitch, or a person who behaves dishonourably. Tax evaders are rats.

Ketchup123 · 20/08/2017 21:27

It kind of just means a snitch.

alleypalley · 20/08/2017 21:27

None of us know the full story, so until then I do think OP is being spiteful & mean

I don't care if the OPs motivation is spite quite honestly, criminal behaviour should be reported.

In answer to your actual question OP, I'm pretty sure they could easily investigate. I assume someone with £1k a week cash has nice stuff, they must be able to see if there is no recorded income to show they could afford to purchase all that.

Ketchup123 · 20/08/2017 21:28

How about "nobody likes a snitch" - does that make it clearer for you?

PoorYorick · 20/08/2017 21:28

Ok, let's say you're right. You're not, but let's say that you are. The argument isn't about definitions of slang words. OP should still report a potential serious financial crime, because the people who commit it are doing something illegal and immoral.
