Me and my partner are currently having a discussion about this and he wants to know whether it's true that black people associate gollywogs with racism...?

"Those patronising black dolls you get nowadays should be banned as well."

I don't understand why. Can you explain, please?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/08/2017 17:49

scaryclown

Those patronising black dolls you get nowadays should be banned as well

Just when one might have thought the depths had been plumbed.

I take it you mean dolls that are to all intents and purposes the same as all other dolls except they have a different skin tone?

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 20/08/2017 17:49

Which dolls are patronising?

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 20/08/2017 17:50

People are way too sensitive and anachranistic these days.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/08/2017 17:50

Bertrand I think Scaryclown is having a dig at toys like these.

MrsDustyBusty · 20/08/2017 17:51

What do you believe 'anachronistic' to mean?

scaryclown · 20/08/2017 17:51

'about spiders?'

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 20/08/2017 17:58

What scary dolls were you talking about, Clown?

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 20/08/2017 17:59

Sorry - patronising dolls?

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 20/08/2017 18:02

Fucking hell "about spiders??" What's even the point???

CockacidalManiac · 20/08/2017 18:04

People are way too sensitive and anachranistic these days.

Eh?

scaryclown · 20/08/2017 18:07

Anachry 🎸

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/08/2017 18:10

What patronising dolls were you talking about, Clown

Yes , I'd like to know too.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/08/2017 18:16

You said people are too sensitive- that would suggest you think some of us are making too much of a fuss about gollies.

You also said People are way too sensitive and anachranistic these days

I assume you meant anachronistic- gollies are anachronistic (or should be) which would mean presumably you agree with those of us decrying gollies.

"Spiders" is just scary being silly and perhaps a bit patronising (Arachnoids)

I just read the bit that stated that these threads come round loads and 'oh no here we go again' but 7 pages in, nobody has just ignored it because 'oh we aren't doing this again are we?' type thing. People still debating it, so it must be worth talking about still.

By the way, I had no idea about golliwogs thing. This is new to me. I'm still confused about it so off to google.
My step dad has one, it's on my mum and his bedroom shelf with about 10 of their other collectible/sentimental teddies they have.

I'm obviously out of the loop, first the control of the tides by the moon, now this.....mumsnet is being educational for me today.

QueenoftheAndals · 20/08/2017 19:07

You must have led a very sheltered life if you had no idea about "the golliwog thing" Hmm

Cubtrouble · 20/08/2017 19:12

I have a golliwog upstairs that I've had since I was about 3 I would say. I'm not racist, I wouldn't not get rid of a beloved childhood toy to conform to someone else's opinion.

I keep him at home- it's not like I'd parade him around- but neither would I parade about with my anicient Paddington bear either.

My friends would not describe me as racist either.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 20/08/2017 19:16

No need to be so rude @Queens in your sheltered life post.

I'm in my 40's and wasn't aware in regards to Disney. Sometimes stuff bypasses us especially if your focus is on dealing with life's trauma etc than what's going on in the world

candlefloozy · 20/08/2017 19:26

My nan brought one from a very old lady who knitted when my dd was born. About three years ago. I was horrified but my dd loved it. I put it in my wardrobe where it still is. My nan didn't see a problem with it?! It's still in my wardrobe as I don't want anyone to see it in my bin

TestTubeTeen · 20/08/2017 19:33

What I was thinking about when I wrote my post was the sheer ignorance of people who can read about the history of these things, (god that Enid Blyton text is GROTESQUE. And actually it isn't ok to write it off as 'of its time', plenty of people even in those days recognised that sort of shit as racist) , hear the opinions of others, see what black people think and feel, and still consider that their opinion that they are not racist is more credible than what anyone else thinks.

It is not possible to self-declare that you are not racist. We live in a racist society. We can aspire to be non racist and remain alert and conscious.

QueenoftheAndals · 20/08/2017 19:41

No need to be so rude @Queens in your sheltered life post.

Meh, I'm done with being polite to the wilfully ignorant.

scaryclown · 20/08/2017 21:39

Hovis is just as racist (northernist) as poor Golly, as it suggests child labour, unsafe working conditions and bakers lung.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 20/08/2017 21:48

Not RTFT but as an Aussie born in 78 who read Noddy books, I had absolutely no idea at the connotations about golliwogs. I really thought they were people made out of licorice Blush.

Oh what utter bollocks.
