Just had some and it really is nothing like the fresh stuff. There is a horrible after taste. Yuck!

Well, i'm trying to be vegan so really shouldn't be eating it but i was starving and there was left over pasta and friends who had stayed while we were in holiday had left an open jar so ....

Parmesan is not vegetarian, so if made authentically, pesto isn't vegetarian.

Thanks for the recommendation on the Ocado pesto, OP, i haven't had any for ages as I went off the fresh brand I was using - if there's a surge in sales, they should give you a cut!

stargazer2030 · 19/08/2017 07:58

Oops. I didn't know parmesan wasn't vegetarian. I assumed all cheese was okay. Am guessing that a lot of jars use a cheaper alternative but will check from now on and keep that quiet. Think I need to research veggie cheeses as she eats lots of different ones and have never checked any.

Yanbu

Green jar stuff tastes off to me. Red pesto in a jar even the cheap lidl one is delicious.

Not as good as homemade but great to have in the cupboard for a quick meal when you're all tired and hungry to avoid paying for a take away.

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 08:06

There are veggie versions of pesto in a jar. Salcha does a green veggie one.

Does anyone know how to make red pesto? I make the green, but would love to know what is in the red one.

NicolasFlamel · 19/08/2017 08:09

The worst is Morrisons own brand pesto. So gross! It's soapy and greasy. Never again.

impostersyndrome · 19/08/2017 08:11

stargazer2030 after a lot of hunting, I found Sainsburys basics Italian hard cheese is a good Parmesan substitute

londonrach · 19/08/2017 08:19

You bought the wrong stuff.

rhodanunn · 19/08/2017 08:27

I cannot stand sacla; it's like an algae based mildew.

I just blend whatever greens in the fridge (normally spinach/kale) with whatever herbs (usually parsley) with some walnuts and garlic. Nutritional yeast instead of cheese for us non dairy lot.

cardibach · 19/08/2017 15:35

I think the comments about it not being snobby are directed at me. I also think the posters are wilfully misunderstanding. Of course preferring one thing over another is snobby. The tone of the OP in the other hand is very superior. That 'just had some of t' suggesting it's unusual and the condescending 'Yuck!' At the end. It very much feels like the OP is saying it's unreasonable for people to prefer one thing over another - or to be unable to afford one thing over another.

Jarred pesto is expensive and pretty horrible. Waitrose make a fresh one, freezes without much damage....making it fresh and freezing on ice cube trays works too.

allegretto · 19/08/2017 16:41

I always thought I hated pesto until I started making it! Totally different. The horrible taste you get in jarred pesto is usually cheap veg oil. Pesto is actually expensive to make well (pine nuts are very costly as is good evo) so we don't have it often.

ilovevenice · 19/08/2017 16:42

I got a terrible addiction for this stuff when I worked near Whole Foods on Kensington High Street:
www.seggiano.com/Shop/Pesto/Seggiano-Raw-Basil-Pesto-200g
Terrible because it costs almost £6 a jar, but it is worth it (used sparingly!)...
the DC get the usual supermarket stuff

ilovevenice · 19/08/2017 16:42

I love it when I make it myself but convenience is a wonderful thing!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 19/08/2017 16:45

It may just be the brand. Theres aot of whole grain mustards i hate thr taste of but a couple of brands i love.

PinkHeart5911 · 19/08/2017 16:47

I don't like jarred pesto. Dh always makes it himself so I think that's why I taste the diffrence when given the jarred stuff.

The home made stuff is the food of gods

TinklyLittleLaugh · 19/08/2017 17:11

If you have a food processor then making pesto takes 5 minutes at most.

IHopeYourCakeIsShit · 19/08/2017 17:14

I can't afford to make my own.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 19/08/2017 17:17

HoneyRoar sacla do a Free From red pesto which is vegetarian-I've only sound it in Waitrose though

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 17:47

Thanks Ihope. Our Tescos did it for a week, but only does the green now. We don't have Waitrose. I'd make it if I knew how. (Green is easy).

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 17:49

Why isn't Parmesan veggie?? 😧

ChickenVindaloo2 · 19/08/2017 17:58

Another one here who didn't know it came any other way than in a jar...and I'm a very middle-class solicitor in my thirties! Grin (lighthearted!)

(Wonders what on earth else I am doing wrong and whether it's stuff like this which means I don't fit in at posh firms?!!!!)

5rivers7hills · 19/08/2017 18:04

You can't make fresh pesto cheaper than you can buy it.

Personally I'm quite a fan of Tesco red pesto!

5rivers7hills · 19/08/2017 18:05

Also the sacla aubergine one is delish

squoosh · 19/08/2017 18:06

honeyroar it's because rennet (an animal protein) is used during production to separate the cheese into curds and whey.
