Just had some and it really is nothing like the fresh stuff. There is a horrible after taste. Yuck!

Now i feel like i'm going to have to make my own to see what that's like. Agree it could be dear if you're not careful with the ingredients.

I love the fresh pesto's in a tub - delicious. But the jars are practical and taste ok.

squoosh · 18/08/2017 23:38

You're not wrong OP, there's always a bitter aftertaste. The tubs of fresh are best if you don't want to organise yourself into having all the necessary (and pretty expensive) ingredients to hand.

kmc1111 · 18/08/2017 23:47

YANBU. At best it's bland, at worst it's just greasy with that awful aftertaste.

I don't get how it's snobbish to prefer fresh? It's not a difficult or expensive thing to make, and every supermarket has 'fresh' options these days, some of them the same price as a mid-range jar. You can freeze it too.

BeALert · 18/08/2017 23:50

I love the fresh stuff from the fridge section in the supermarket. Love even more the home made stuff but am too lazy to make it most of the time.

The jars are just wrong.

Sugarformyhoney · 18/08/2017 23:51

Sacla chilli pesto is life 👌I don't care for fresh pesto

LockedOutOfMN · 18/08/2017 23:51

Pesto in a jar is so smelly!

WordsAreWind · 18/08/2017 23:52

The jars from Aldi are amazing.

Titsywoo · 18/08/2017 23:53

I love sacla pesto. I like fresh stuff too but prefer sacla. I also prefer shitty concentrated orange juice over freshly squeezed. It's all a matter of taste really!

squoosh · 18/08/2017 23:53

Me either! Next we'll be told it's snobbish to prefer a freshly cooked breakfast to one of those breakfasts in a tin Grin

I hate the 'fresh' stuff in supermarket fridges though - bleugh!

HemanOrSheRa · 18/08/2017 23:56

Don't be naughty squoosh Grin.

ThierryEnnui · 18/08/2017 23:56

FuckyDuck is right. Aldi jar pesto is lovely. Try it OP!

echt · 18/08/2017 23:58

It being winter in Melbourne, the nasturtiums are taking over, so I'm going to try making pesto with the leaves. I understand pesto freezes well, so it should be worth the effort.

Rkd808 · 19/08/2017 00:15

You'll probably find that the ones you like use pine nuts whereas the majority of the jars use Cashew nuts (which are cheaper), Waitrose premium range is pine nuts all the rest are cashews.

echt · 19/08/2017 00:18

This unexpected hazard had me reading the small print on pine nuts for my nasturtium pesto:

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/08/2017 00:19

I was going to start my own thread about this but didn't want to be accused of having a TAAT.

I have never ever tried or bought pesto. I'm not even sure what the fuck it is, but I'm pretty sure folk around here don't eat it much. AIBU?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/08/2017 00:20

Pasta here comes with a cheesy sauce, a tomatoey sauce or bolognese. FYI.

ThierryEnnui · 19/08/2017 00:22

Are you in the U.K., Santa?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/08/2017 00:25

Yes I am. The rather uncosmopolitan side of the midlands.

SkintAsASkintThing · 19/08/2017 00:45

I got into.a mexican standoff with a Monk in Aldi who cleared the shelf on aldi of green pesto once Blush I ended up swiping two jars from his basket when he wasn't looking won.

Kursk · 19/08/2017 00:56

We make our own fresh

stargazer2030 · 19/08/2017 02:53

I love Aldi Pesto too. Prefer it to home made ( well my home made anyway). I didn't even know you could buy it fresh from the supermarket - am going to try that now.
On another note is it not vegetarian? Have never checked but just presumed it was after looking at the main ingredients. Am a bit worried now as veggie daughter eats loads of the stuff.

Clawdy · 19/08/2017 06:54

In Italy at the moment, and have had gnocchi with fresh pesto twice. It's nice - but it's honestly not that much different from the one I make at home with a jar of pesto.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 19/08/2017 07:24

stargazer it depends how strict she is. The cheese used is often not vegetarian. I don't worry about it myself, but I think Sacla do a vegetarian jar and probably other brands too. No idea about fresh.
