To have been upset by this incident? Should I call 101?

Just walking home from work and a man ahead of me pressed the button to cross the road. Heard it starting to beep so I crossed too.

Suddenly the two cars waiting started driving towards me and one was beeping. For a moment I doubted myself but I looked and it was flashing green still for me. They went through the red light.

The man beeping didn't seem to be looking at me and I got the impression (could be wrong) that they may have been racing each other.

The cars behind them didn't move.

Aibu to have been upset by this?

If you didn't get their registration numbers and time has now elapsed after the incident, I don't think there's any point in you calling 101 because they won't still be racing and you don't have any information the police could act upon to trace them.

You aren't unreasonable to have been upset or scared, but I don't think there's anything you can do about it at this point.

SheSaidHeSaid · 18/08/2017 17:50

I misinterpreted it then as I read it as though they went behind you, not in front of you and they sounded impatient rather than intimidating.

WooWooSister · 18/08/2017 17:51

It sounds as though you're a bit confused about pelican crossings. If the green man is flashing (rather than a steady light) then the cars can move off if there are no pedestrians currently crossing. If a pedestrian is half-way across, sometimes the cars the pedestrian has already passed will start to drive because there are no pedestrians on their side of the road.

StayCloseToMe · 18/08/2017 17:52

"Don't cross the road when the green man is flashing."

I'm sure that's the punchline to a joke I heard in primary school, but I can't remember the rest of it.

🤷🏻‍♀️

OhGrace · 18/08/2017 17:55

What were you thinking of saying if you call 101?

OhGrace · 18/08/2017 17:55

*called

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2017 17:57

If you didn't get the number plate, there's no point in ringing 101.

And actually even if you did, you have no witnesses.

kittybiscuits · 18/08/2017 17:58

What were you upset about?
What a seriously stupid question.

Floralnomad · 18/08/2017 17:59

I wouldn't call 101 , I don't see what can be achieved by it , I'd have just satisfied myself by shouting a few expletives at them .

Redglitter · 18/08/2017 18:00

Really sad that you have to be physically hurt for there to be any consequences of dangerous driving

That's not the case but without car registration numbers and witnesses or evidence there's not a thing the police can do

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox · 18/08/2017 18:03

Did you mean to be so rude?

You didn't agree with her, notever, so yes, it looks like it.

Hmm

Her point didn't make sense because if the lights were on flashing amber then the pedestrian still has right of way.

Of course it made sense. You said it was a red light, and I suggested it may actually have been amber. Did you not understand that?

How would you imagine the police would track down the drivers?

Strokethefurrywall · 18/08/2017 18:35

I don't understand why you need validation from mumsnet for, what sounds like an entirely non-event.

How the hell did people cope with their feelings before there were things like mumsnet?

OP what on earth would you say to the person at the other end of the line if you called 101?

"There may have been two cars about to race each other on x street, because I was crossing at the pelican crossing and the green man was flashing and one of the cars hooted at me, I think he was impatient or he was signalling the other driver and they started to move forward and it upset me..."

Good grief

kittybiscuits · 18/08/2017 18:37

Funny, I thought that ^ was the whole point of AIBU

Why would I say that when that's not what happened?

They drove through a red light (the cars behind them didn't move) I was half way across and one had gone by me and one was starting to go straight into me whilst beeping his horn.

They didn't care. They could have done that to a child or an elderly person.

Op what can the police do? What outcome would you like?

Forevergazingupwards · 18/08/2017 18:50

I'm not going to contact the police! I asked if I should, I got told no. I never said I was going to.

The only reason I would is because I thought if they could do something it may give those guys the scare they need.

YetAnotherDayIsHere · 18/08/2017 18:52

Regardless of whether the green man was flashing or not, it is illegal for the cars to have driven through a red or amber light. Even if they had a flashing amber, you were crossing. Regardless, because you were crossing, you take priority as a pedestrian (as annoying as that rule often is). So, as this is AIBU, no you are not for being shaken up by it but calling 101 won't achieve anything unless there was cctv footage and even then, I doubt there are the resources to follow it up. Since it has clearly affected you so much, I suppose there is no harm in reporting it in case there have been other reports or sightings.

Craicvac · 18/08/2017 18:53

On the bus reading this thread, and we've just stopped at a pedestrian crossing- certainly this one has amber lights when the green man flashes. Doesn't mean they were right to go, but may suggest that they didn't run a red.

manglethedangle · 18/08/2017 18:54

I'd be shaken but unless you have the reg numbers there's no point contacting the police. I'd just move on.

2014newme · 18/08/2017 18:55

Op how would the police give the guys a scare when you do you know who they are?
