Spent easter in SW Donegal and fell in love. Amazing landscapes, scenery, mountains, rivers. Stayed in a lovely SC cottage with all the mod cons just outside a lovely village.

Would love to go back next easter or summer, but would like to go for longer therefore would like somewhere that has something for the dc. Obviously not on a theme park level, but something to do other than sight seeing. Three dc between 10 and 17. Any recommendations?

Galway. If you go somewhere like Carraroe, it's very quiet and peaceful and beautiful but you're also very close to the city. I know you don't want too much sightseeing, but if you have the chance, go to the Alawee caves and the Céide fields.

sashimiyummies · 17/08/2017 19:35

West Clare. The Burden and Ballyvaughan

Glumglowworm · 17/08/2017 19:37

I love Cork, it's within reach of the gorgeous scenery of west cork and co Kerry, the old gaol is now a museum and one of my favourite things to do in the city

The Burren in Co Clare is one of the most beautiful and bizarre places I've ever seen, it's like another planet

Dingle.
Cork
Dublin.

x2boys · 17/08/2017 19:39

I have never been but my Dads from Skibereen in cork I follow the Facebook page it looks beautiful and about 10 miles from the coast.

e1y1 · 17/08/2017 19:44

Cork

MulhuddartDrive · 17/08/2017 19:45

Wild Atlantic way is amazing - lots of investment to make it a real adventure. Tayto park is over in Meath if you do want a theme park.

FelixtheMouse · 17/08/2017 19:46

West Cork. Conakilty & Kinsale. Great restaurants, wonderful scenery and handy for a ferry.

MrsDustyBusty · 17/08/2017 19:46

Mulhuddart Drive! Arf!

Also look at Aughrim in Wicklow?

Graunaile2017 · 17/08/2017 19:48

Cork and Galway, do the Wild Atlantic Way, don't bother with Dublin

MadamPince · 17/08/2017 19:48

Kerry is beautiful - rather overrun with buses during July/August but amazing for Easter holidays or in September.
Galway is great, just generally following the wild Atlantic way you can't go wrong.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 17/08/2017 19:51

I've had lovely holidays in Cork, Donegal and Galway. NI is lovely too. The mournes are beautiful and I also love the north coast.

HRHPrincessMegan · 17/08/2017 19:57

Co. Wicklow is beautiful and has easy access to Dublin. Brittas Bay beach has amazing dunes and golden sand, in the mountains there's Glendalough which is stunning but importantly for your dc, close to Clara Laragh adventure park. There are also loads of country shows June/July/August and the Dublin Horse Show in August is great. You can also go to the races at Leopardstown. Loads to do!

Ireland is full of beautiful spots.

West Cork/Kerry (ring of Kerry etc)...absolutely beautiful for touring.

Wicklow is lovely.

My favourite would be the West. Connemara and Galway city. Beautiful part of the world.

Up north you gave the Giants Causeway which is pretty stunning.

ILikTheBred · 17/08/2017 20:11

Sligo is lovely - also on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Beckywiththebadhair · 17/08/2017 20:13

We're off to North Donegal next week. So so beautiful with amazing beaches.

Hassled · 17/08/2017 20:17

Co Wicklow is absolutely lovely - lots to do and you're in easy striking distance of Dublin (the Dart from Bray). Climbing the Sugarloaf is great - amazing views.

Other than that I'd say Killarney/Ring of Kerry.

Sushi123 · 17/08/2017 20:20

Bundoran in Donegal is great for kids, but also close to some other less commercial places, you could stay in lovely rustic places nearby but head into bundoran to let the kids burn off some energy. Westport is also a brilliant place to visit but maybe only suitable if you are doing a couple of overnight stays on the way, as a very long if you are travelling from England

Elenorrigbywoes · 17/08/2017 20:55

The Wild Atlantic Way is really nice you can fly into Knock airport (Co Mayo) and hire a car and go from there. It is mostly sightseeing though. Down Patrick Head in Killala Co Mayo is fantastic. Amazing. You could climb Croagh Patrick or hire bikes and cycle the Greenway. Achill Island isn't too far from there and is lovely.
Enniscrone Co Sligo is along that route and we really enjoyed it. Waterpoint is a large swimming pool with some slides. A lovely walk around the coastline and the beach is amazing. They have surfing there for kids which was really enjoyable. They have a large aeroplane a real one which is going to be made into a glamping site soon.
Also really liked Galway. Loads for kids to do in Salthill - amusements, an aquarium. Galway city is lovely to walk around and loads of nice places to eat.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 17/08/2017 20:58

Sligo. Breathtaking.

treaclesoda · 17/08/2017 21:03

The north coast. Has beautiful beaches, loads of them. Giant's Causeway, Carrick a Rede rope bridge, Bushmills distillery, and Portrush for the sort of seaside experience much loved by small children i.e. amusements, fish and chips and rock.

Also within easy travelling distance of Derry, which is lovely these days, the Antrim coast road, and even parts of Donegal.

treaclesoda · 17/08/2017 21:03

I mean Portrush is much loved by kids. Not Bushmills distillery Grin

Herculesfan · 17/08/2017 21:06

Valentia Island in Co.Kerry is lovely really great place to base yourself and loads to do in the area.

Surfing/Sailing/Sea zappers locally. Walks, a dinosaur footprint, trip to Skellig's where Star Wars was filmed, loads more

justforthisthread101 · 17/08/2017 21:13

Can't beat Connemara - my favourite place in the world (and where I am right now).

3hrs 45mins from Dublin by car. (Thank you EU, I love the M6 more than life itself)

minsmum · 17/08/2017 21:32

Wexford beautiful beaches
