We are not long back from our summer holiday, whist at the airport waiting to depart I took DD2 to the toilet ..and had to pass a young guy with a T-shirt on that said FUCK ME in huge letters on it. He was in the bar area...but we had to pass it to go to the toilet and DD has just learnt to read so is going through the stage of sounding out and reading everything she sees.

Last year at an Airport in Paris , we were queuing right behind a young man with a T shirt with a full T shirt sized print of a topless woman playing a card game in provocative pose whilst going through security .....I don't think I am a prude but surely it shouldn't be okay for clothing like that to be worn in such public places ? Or do I sound about 80 ! I just think If I was check in staff/Airport staff etc I would comment and ask them to cover their top up.

I think it's probably illegal (along the lines of "likely to cause offence").

You wouldn't like to see "Fuck Me" written on the side of a bus, I'm sure, so why on a T-shirt?

Popfan · 17/08/2017 17:26

YANBU -totally agree with you!

FluffyMcCloud · 17/08/2017 17:26

I had a Nirvana T Shirt and a Chumbawamba t shirt confiscated at church camp when I was younger. I was so proud lol how rock n roll I was

JacquesHammer · 17/08/2017 17:26

OP - your line about "just sounding out" - surely she'd have had to have taken a good old look at it to be sounding out?

heateallthebuns · 17/08/2017 17:28

Haha good point Jaques!!!! I'd actually probably just say it was inappropriate as dcs have picked up on calling people idiots - oops!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 17/08/2017 17:28

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what." - Stephen Fry

coconuttella · 17/08/2017 17:29

I'm not sure how this could or should be policed, but to those saying "YABU. Tough shit if you found a t-shirt with FUCK on it offensive", do you genuinely believe there should be no line? What about hardcore pornography on t-shirts on the school run, or graphic images of mutilated bodies on hoodies at a playground? Surely no one can believe that is ok?!

Admitting 'censorship' has potentially troubling consequences doesn't mean we should have no boundaries whatsoever?

DustinGee · 17/08/2017 17:31

There are laws against displaying extreme pornography in public Hmm

If there's a law against the word "fuck" then we're all, erm, fucked.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 17/08/2017 17:32

I think that crosses into public decency laws

DustinGee · 17/08/2017 17:36

"Fuck me" written on the side of a bus would not be illegal, but would almost certainly breach taste & decency guidelines in advertising.

The word "fuck" is not illegal. You could not have someone arrested for merely saying it (with no other factors) so what makes anyone think that reading it is or should be illegal?

Dear me. Free speech is such an incredibly important part of a democratic society...it's the very bedrock...and it's shameful how few people understand it.

DustinGee · 17/08/2017 17:37

Oh, and "offence" in legal terms does not mean "I don't like seeing/hearing that naughty word".

Davros · 17/08/2017 17:54

I remember my friend's very posh mum turning her "If it Ain't Stiff It Ain't Worth a Fuck" t-shirt inside out on the washing line after she'd carefully washed it for her!
DH and I have noticed over the years that people who don't speak English as a first language sometimes have odd slogans on them and don't quite get the meaning. Our favourite was a middle aged lady on a bus in Rome wearing a t-shirt saying "I Love Sailors" Grin Inoffensive but funny nonetheless.
Does anyone remember the Vivienne Westwood one of two cowboys facing eachother with their cocks out? And then there was the Snow White one, that was a shocker. I had one Blush
Fuck on a t-shirt is stupid and unpleasant though

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 17/08/2017 18:20

Wouldn't T-shirts like those come under the "Outraging public decency" legislation in the UK?

I'm a firm believer in wearing what you want and saying what you want...but understanding there's a time and a place for being "edgy". I wouldn't want "obscene" T-shirts to be banned though as they're a great way of seperating the chaff from the wheat.

magentastardust · 17/08/2017 18:34

Jaques- I know I can explain to her it is a not very nice word and she shouldn't use it as it is offensive to some people..and that is exactly what I would say but my whole point is that exactly..the guy wearing that should know that , I shouldn't have to explain that to my daughter nor why it is okay for him to wear it although I have just told her it is offensive.

It was in big bold letters she can sound out 4 letter words just takes a second .. maybe this time last year it wouldn't have bothered me as much as she wouldn't have been trying to read it out! Maybe the moral is if you are going to wear sweary T-shirts have it in small print or use really long words please !

the guy wearing that should know that

But why should he care?

AlmostAJillSandwich · 17/08/2017 18:40

spuddington was it the jesus is a see you next tuesday one? My aunt bought it fpr my sister but it was written on the back and the packaging only showed the front. Cue embarrassment.

magentastardust · 17/08/2017 18:49

I don't know just...because we live in a community, a society-we should care about being considerate to others.

I am not sure things would work that well if we just worried only about ourselves and weren't aware of our surroundings or how our actions may make others feel?

I don't really like seeing his T-shirt but it doesn't make that much difference to me personally, as I said before if I was in a pub or club then I would just think to myself what an awful T-shirt .However I really don't like that he thinks it is okay to wear it in front of children though and feels the need to try and be edgy or shock or just not care about others.

Bluntness100 · 17/08/2017 18:50

Meh. I think the wearer looks like an idiot. Can't say think they should be banned though. I wouldn't expect airport staff to comment as they are both not illegal and there is no dress code.

I did see someone wearing this. It made me laugh. Wouldn't have the balls to wear it myself but I did chuckle.

On a recent trip to a child oriented event a man was walking around in a tshirt with a nearly nude woman on it. Her nipples were very prominent. I did wonder on his choice.

I think anyone would Grin

ILoveMillhousesDad · 17/08/2017 19:02

Yanbu OP. I hate seeing females in t-shirts such as 'queen bitch' and the like.

And the people who wear them are all so proud of themselves. They might as well walk round with a megaphone saying 'I'M SO FUCKING COOL AND FUNNY. LOOK AT MY T-SHIRT'

Sad and attention seeking.

pointythings · 17/08/2017 19:57

Trouble is, Mega, one person's decency and morals is another person's repression. It's entirely subjective.

This, in a nutshell. Having public decency laws is fine, but they are fine as they are. You have to be very careful with banning things. The science T-shirt I own would be very offensive to a certain type of extremely religious person and probably also to the anti-vaxx brigade. Should I therefore be banned from wearing it? I sincerely hope not.

StickThatInYourPipe · 17/08/2017 20:17

Pointy I like the sound of your t-shirt I would appreciate it Wink
