To let 12 year old read Curious incident of the dog in the night time?

wrote a longer post but it didn't work.

Bright 12 year old wants to read it based on suggestions on his kindle.

I read it ages ago so can't really remember it but reviews mention a lot of swearing.
Anyone read it recently? Any 12 year olds?

I seem to recall it having the word cunt in it.

Glumglowworm · 17/08/2017 13:13

He'll hear all manner of swearing at school anyway

When I was 12 I was reading whatever I wanted from the adult library much of which was highly inappropriate

AlpacaPicnic · 17/08/2017 13:14

Maybe... I'm confused now!
It might be one of those false memories from that other thread.

WilliowGreen · 17/08/2017 13:19

There is definitely a children's version of it. There is nothing in it that is too upsetting or inappropriate for a 12 year old to read.

operaha · 17/08/2017 13:20

I do recall the cunt word being in it but I know he's heard that before and knows it is wrong, I work in a high school so am well aware he's heard it all before!
Downloaded and he's ready to read!

I was having this exact internal conversation recently. Good to read the thread.

fussygalore118 · 17/08/2017 14:21

My 10 year old has read it..a few time she loved it! She is reading crazy tho and swearing in books ( and music /poetry ) has never bothered me I class it the same as nude painting/sculpture .. it's all artistic expression isn't it.

MadamPince · 17/08/2017 14:49

It's a teenage novel, 12 is a good age for reading it.

BannedFromNarnia · 17/08/2017 14:51

Sure, it's a great book for that age.

Is it possible that you're remembering different cover styles of the same book? That often happens with popular YA novels to attract adults that wouldn't touch it otherwise.

dinkystinky · 17/08/2017 14:55

My 11 year old has read it (as have I). We then discussed it.

peachgreen · 17/08/2017 14:59

Ooh if you get a chance go to the stage show, it's absolutely amazing.

operaha · 17/08/2017 15:26

Yes to the poster who said about the swearing not bothering them for that reason, that was my feeling but then I can be quite foul mouthed so it mostly washes over me and I thought I'd get told that I was a terrible mum subjecting him to it.

We'll deffo go to the stage show sometime

I'm reading it to my ten year old at the moment - he very smart but struggles to read please don't judge. He's also seen the stage show. He loves it because he has Aspergers in a very similar way to the character. There are fucks in it. Don't remember the cunt but he learned that at school last year anyway. I think 12 is fine.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/08/2017 16:56

If your other son read it at age 11, i'm wondering why you are asking if it's okay for your 12 year old - or am I missing something? Confused

peachgreen · 17/08/2017 17:04

@TheHungryDonkey Nothing wrong with reading to your children at any age, don't apologise! DH still reads to me sometimes and I'm 33! Grin

OstentatiousWanking · 17/08/2017 17:13

Absolutely let him.
It's a wonderful book.

Glumglowworm · 17/08/2017 17:15

I second going to see the stage show, it's fantastic!

JacquesHammer · 17/08/2017 17:16

YANBU to let them read it.

I never understood the fuss about this book - excellent subject matter, poorly written IMO

OstentatiousWanking · 17/08/2017 17:19

Donkey I read Catcher in the rye aloud to my DD when she was 16.
We took turns for each chapter. It's one of our best memories.
She is 25 now and has an excellant degree and a wonderful life.
Reading with someone else is a lovely thing to share ime

operaha · 18/08/2017 10:05

Wax, I hadn't read it when other son had.

Anyway, he's absolutely hooked, we're on holiday and he'll have it finished today.

Any suggestions for books as good?

Nuttynoo · 18/08/2017 10:13

I read Catcher in the Rye when I was 10, the shining at 11, Othello at 9... curious incident isn't even a fifth as disturbing as those!

kimlo · 18/08/2017 10:15

dd1 read it at about 10 for the first time. She loves it and has seen it at the theater too.

AmyGardner · 18/08/2017 10:16

I'm sorry, but I'm laughing at the suggestion of reading it to him aloud so that you can edit out the swear words as you go. Grin

He is 12, not 7!

By 12 I was reading anything I could get my hands on. Especially if it involved shagging and/or gore.

Peanutbuttercheese · 18/08/2017 10:18

I was reading adult literature when I was around seven, secretly my Mother didn't have a clue. I read worse than that, its a great book.

peachgreen · 18/08/2017 11:01

I remember my mum gave me Barbara Taylor Bradford's "A Woman Of Substance" when I was 10 - I was a voracious reader and I think she just thought it was a nice long book that would keep me quiet. I think she'd forgotten the multiple rape scenes...! Anyway, it didn't scar me for life (although reading The Exorcist at 11 definitely stopped me sleeping for a few weeks!).
