to feel uncomfortable using a £50 note

DH was given a £50 note by BIL and passed it on to me to top up the electricity and do some shopping and my first reaction was that the local shop might be a bit funny about accepting it. He thinks money is money and I'm being a bit strange.

I've decided to go a bit out of my way to use it at the Post Office so there shouldn't be a problem but am I being weird? All I can think of is that I'm turning into those little old ladies who were afraid of £20 notes when I was a kid Grin

Most shops don't accept 50s anyway

McTufty · 16/08/2017 09:53

I've never used one, I'd feel weird too!! Which is silly as it's legal tender, but there it is.

MsGameandWatching · 16/08/2017 09:54

I used to get loads of them because that's how ex H often got paid so he'd pay me child support with them. I got used to them but if I was shopping with my Mum she'd get rather flustered and have to point out to the retail assistant that we were using £50 notes and how "flash" it was Hmm.

I think there's more of them about now, I don't the raised eyebrows I used to but they always check them very carefully.

MeganLowena · 16/08/2017 09:54

I got given two for Christmas and still haven't spent them because I feel awkward. Think I'll just pay them into the bank and then pay by card...

CarolinePenvenen · 16/08/2017 09:54

You’re being weird. It’s just money and, tbh, while I might have understood your reaction 30 years ago, these days £50 is no great shakes. And I say that as someone who is brassic! Would love a £50 note now Grin

MsGameandWatching · 16/08/2017 09:54

I've never known a shop refuse a £50 note.

Pinkkahori · 16/08/2017 09:55

Is it because it is considered a large sum? €50 notes are bog standard notes here in Ireland.

SuzukiLi · 16/08/2017 09:56

I always used to get paid in 50's. Never had an issue!

Glumglowworm · 16/08/2017 09:56

A lot of small shops have signs up saying they don't accept £50 notes, so yanbu

Wheb I worked in a small shop in Ireland, €50 was normal but the occasional times we got anything bigger I always asked a manager if I could take it Blush

I think as we're not familiar with £50 or €100 notes, we feel less confident to know if it looks and feels right. I mean I didn't even know what colour €100 or €200 should be when I was handling the lower denominations every day and knew them well.

NotAPuffin · 16/08/2017 09:57

I don't understand. Why would you feel uncomfortable?

DumbledoresApprentice · 16/08/2017 09:57

My Dad sometimes gives me £50 notes for Birthdays and Christmases. I've never had a problem spending them.

reportPost · 16/08/2017 09:58

I feel funny when using them to light candles. They don't burn as well as twenties for some reason.

Seriously though, why would you feel funny?

I don't remember the last one I had one. Not broke, just rarely have enough cash where £50 notes would make sense.

PodgeBod · 16/08/2017 09:58

I've never had an issue using them and always accepted them happily when I worked in a shop (we had a machine to check they were real). It might have been an issue 20 years ago but definitely not now.
My mum gets annoyed if I spend one, though, as she likes to save them. I can't afford to save £50 Grin

owwmyelbow · 16/08/2017 09:59

I've heard some supermarkets won't take them, and at McDonald's etc they call a manager over etc. People try and buy with fake 50s then get given real change from it. I hate when I get them but just pay them in at the bank etc usually. My dad on the other hand throws a huge strop and demands to see a manager if he gets any resistance at all - as it's legal tender Hmm

EvansOvalPies · 16/08/2017 10:01

I have also never been refused a £50 note. I understand that a £20 note is more likely to be a forgery than a £50.

DoomGloomAndKaboom · 16/08/2017 10:02

Take it to a bank and change it to 2 twenties and a ten.

Phosphorus · 16/08/2017 10:03

Our local Tesco won't take them at the self service check outs, but normal ones are fine.

I usually pay them in to the bank, then isecmy debit card.

nomorechocolate1 · 16/08/2017 10:05

I wouldn't use it in day a small local shop as they mite not be able to change it. But no issues anywhere else

bluesbaby · 16/08/2017 10:07

Just spend it! It's fine.

Grace789 · 16/08/2017 10:08

It's legal tender, I always except them in my shop!

SheGotOffThePlane · 16/08/2017 10:10

I spend fifties now and again and always feel like a drug dealer handing them over Grin

whinesalot · 16/08/2017 10:12

As a pp said they try to buy something small and get real change.
There has been a spate of it round our way and the local shops all ring each other when someone is doing the rounds. Several have a policy that a £50 note has to be checked by a manager and most staff are happy to do that as they don't want the responsibility of checking as they don't see them very often and aren't confident in knowing what they are looking for.

I've never had a problem spending £50s. Use them quite frequently.

PumbletonWakeshaft · 16/08/2017 10:19

I have never held a £50 note, let alone spent one! Blush

I must live a sheltered life...
