OH, MIL and Bloody Hand luggage. AIBU??

Due to fly out on holiday this week.

Not married but for sake of the post will put MIL to simplify things and me and OH have been together 9 years.

Anyway, I am being told I am being unreasonable.

Both of my two children both have those trunkies for hand luggage they were gifts from MIL
They are big and bulky and actually don't hold a lot, in these I have packed an assortment of items to keep my children occupied on the 6 hour flight.

Here is the dispute. OH and MiL are telling me I cannot take a small backpack for my youngest (who is 2) in this bag I have put 5 nappies, nappy cream, a pack of wipes, light change of clothes and an empty water bottle ( no liquids through customs) they have told me I cannot take this bag as he already has hand luggage.

However every time I go abroad I take a large hand luggage bag and a small handbag (usually a cross over the body one)
MIL does too, so if we are allowed handbags then surely my 2 year old can have a small changing bag?

I thought it was done on weight anyway? His backpack is tiny and weighs next to nothing I said I would happily put it in my "hand luggage bag" and now OH is in a strop because he thinks MiL will have to pay fees if we go over our allowance (booked in her name).

I don't want to keep getting the bloody "trunki" out and unpacked every time my son needs baby wipes or a nappy change.

AIBU or are those actually the rules? Sorry for the long post but holidays are bloody stressful!

It depends on the airline. Some only allow one bag, some two if up to the weight. You need to read the small print for your flight.

I've had to cram my handbag in my other bag before now.

TheABC · 15/08/2017 08:00

Ram it in the trunki and get it out once you are past the check in point.

KrayKray00 · 15/08/2017 08:02

Please ignore that paragraph "Both of my two children both have those..." WHAT?! 😂

Sorry I was busy wrestling my eldest to give me my phone back!

Depends on the airline. Why does your ritle mention just mil when your oh agrees with her?

Also nappy cream is a paste. Goes under the liquids rule.

SarahJonesS · 15/08/2017 08:03

Your 2 year old has a seat on the plane? If so, he'll have his own luggage allowance. Double check on airline website though.

nomorebabiesyet · 15/08/2017 08:03

Stick it in the trunkie. Dh and mil are being silly. And if you have to pay extra why cant he pay for it. It may be mils name but its not like you get points on your license Hmm people pay extra all the time. And if it weighs nothing you wont anyway.

KrayKray00 · 15/08/2017 08:04

It doesn't I've put "OH (other half), MIL and bloody hand luggage"

KrayKray00 · 15/08/2017 08:07

The trunkie is full, that's why it isn't already in there. I said I would happily put it in with my hand luggage but they are trying to argue it is an extra bag Hmm hence me saying I thought it was based on weight allowance. My two year old has his own seat and the same 6kg allowance like everyone else and his trunkie only weighs 4kg.

If you are on any sort of budget airline I doubt it, but should be fine on some. Just be prepared to fit it inside another bag when checking in if necessary. Maybe use a sports sling bag rather than a rucksack as less bulky.

anditwasallgoingsowell · 15/08/2017 08:07

Who are you flying with?

MachineBee · 15/08/2017 08:08

Tell your OH he's on nappy duty then! He can put it all in HIS hand luggage, and have the fun of dealing with all at the airport and on the plane. Bet he's suddenly realises how reasonable you're being about the hand luggage arrangements. Hmm

user1457213512 · 15/08/2017 08:08

Those trunkis sure are annoying aren't they! :(

Regarding two bags though, most (budget) flights I've been on make you put it all into one bag or otherwise it goes into the hold. Hopefully you'll be ok though.

Ragwort · 15/08/2017 08:09

I can't imagine being 'told what to do' by my DH and MIL Hmm - I think you will have much more serious issues ahead.

Good luck with the holiday.

museumum · 15/08/2017 08:10

It depends on the airline. EasyJet and some others have a strict one bag only policy. British airways and others let you have a handbag and a cabin sized bag.

Just put the changing stuff in your bag.

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 15/08/2017 08:11

Totally depends on who you are flying with.

LIZS · 15/08/2017 08:11

Who are you flying with? Some airlines are strict on one bag per passenger, so either handbag or backpack not both. Dh had to put a small cross body bag inside our wheelie case to pass through the gate. Those with dutyfree could take a carrier bag though. Hmm easyjet allow those with Plus bookings to take an extra bag into the cabin. if the flight is busy you may yet find cabin bags need to go in the hold.

BabsGanoush · 15/08/2017 08:11

I put my handbag into a larger bag and count it as 1 handluggage.

Can you not put the small rucksack and your handbag into a larger holdall (for example) and use that for 'hand luggage'?

nomorebabiesyet · 15/08/2017 08:13

Its really a non issue. Put it in your hand bag. Does mil like drama? And oh fall along aside her?

If its really that much of a problem and you can fit the 2 year olds back pack in your handbag...can you not take the contents out and put it in your handbag without the back pack instead..?

hettie · 15/08/2017 08:13

As others have said check the airline eg Ryan air one carry on and one small sized bag/handbag....Easy jet one carry on an nothing else.... It is not on weight

hana32 · 15/08/2017 08:14

Does that small amount of stuff need to be in a rucksack? You could just put it in a plastic bag and stuff it in your own hand luggage if any comment is made innit. Or buy something in duty free and put it in that carrier bag.

bbcessex · 15/08/2017 08:14

I'm sure you'll be fine.

Tell your MIL & DH you'll risk it.. and tell them to get a life if that's all they have to worry about!!

nomorebabiesyet · 15/08/2017 08:14

Or use a large bag for yourself and that is your handbag/toddler ruck sack.

Bemusedandpuzzled · 15/08/2017 08:14

The fact that your OH is more worried about upsetting his mother than causing you pretty major inconvenience speaks volumes about the dynamic of your partnership.

Nikephorus · 15/08/2017 08:15

Better yet, ditch the trunkies and have 1 normal bag that fits all the trunkie crap plus the other bits you need and let OH carry it. When MIL complains that they've not got their trunkies you can point out how impractical they really are (and how much fuss OH was making about your ideas to get round the problem!).

MrsKoala · 15/08/2017 08:16

We flew Easyjet recently and i'm pretty sure we were allowed a nappy bag separately from hand luggage. I called the customer services line to clarify that each child could have 2 hold things too (car seats/buggy etc) and i think they said yes and a nappy bag - although one is under 2 and was on my lap. I'd call them. Or do one of them online chat things. It's probably in frequently asked questions as well.
