OH, MIL and Bloody Hand luggage. AIBU??

Due to fly out on holiday this week.

Not married but for sake of the post will put MIL to simplify things and me and OH have been together 9 years.

Anyway, I am being told I am being unreasonable.

Both of my two children both have those trunkies for hand luggage they were gifts from MIL
They are big and bulky and actually don't hold a lot, in these I have packed an assortment of items to keep my children occupied on the 6 hour flight.

Here is the dispute. OH and MiL are telling me I cannot take a small backpack for my youngest (who is 2) in this bag I have put 5 nappies, nappy cream, a pack of wipes, light change of clothes and an empty water bottle ( no liquids through customs) they have told me I cannot take this bag as he already has hand luggage.

However every time I go abroad I take a large hand luggage bag and a small handbag (usually a cross over the body one)
MIL does too, so if we are allowed handbags then surely my 2 year old can have a small changing bag?

I thought it was done on weight anyway? His backpack is tiny and weighs next to nothing I said I would happily put it in my "hand luggage bag" and now OH is in a strop because he thinks MiL will have to pay fees if we go over our allowance (booked in her name).

I don't want to keep getting the bloody "trunki" out and unpacked every time my son needs baby wipes or a nappy change.

AIBU or are those actually the rules? Sorry for the long post but holidays are bloody stressful!

It might depend on airport as well as airline as there is NO WAY easyJet will let you through checkin with a small handbag and hand luggage.

Also, I can't believe the threads on here where people are planning what and how they pack before they go - and the amounts of stuff people take , Jesus. You see a family of four at the airport with huge amounts ya of luggage and I just can't fathom what they take with them.

Me, wife, son 12, daughter 7. Two weeks in Gran Canaria, once suitcase at 18KG and four backpacks, packed the morning we left in about 20 minutes.

People dont half over complicate things and make work for themselves.

rightwhine · 15/08/2017 11:10

It obviously depends both on the airlines policy and whether the staff religiously uphold this.
So it's sensible to
A. Check the airlines policy
And if there are restrictions
B. Make sure you can comply if you need to "follow the rules" either by just taking one bag or by taking a bag big enough to consolidate more smaller bags if need be, taking into account weight limits.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/08/2017 11:13

In fairness, the airlines are much stricter at this time of year and it's all down to volume of people travelling. The security area has targets to meet, they have to clear that area at LGW within a certain time period and keep lines down (hence they get quite vocal at times) as otherwise they get fined. The more people faffing around with additional bags etc when the screening happens causes delays.

KimmySchmidt1 · 15/08/2017 11:13

not really about reasonableness just about bothering to look up the airline website and check the rules.

but if only one bag is allowed then clearly you need one bag which can fit in the necessary practical items as well as the play items.

WooWooSister · 15/08/2017 11:15

Easyjet with let you through with hand luggage and another hand bag depending on your ticket type. They have a priority or premium option for hand luggage travellers that lets you take a shoulder bag too. Hence why I suggested OP check the tickets and the airline policy.

HeartburnCentral · 15/08/2017 11:15

I thought with most airlines if you are paying for the seat you can have full hand luggage allowance and for children 2 under 4 you can put two larger items in the hold as well (buggy/carseat).

buffyp · 15/08/2017 11:22

That's funny munch because I'm flying with virgin next year and they very explicitly tell me I can take one piece of cabin luggage and one small personal item such as a handbag. I guess you better write to their head office and tell them they can't possibly allow this because you say soHmm. It also appears to be the case with Thomas Cook as someone else posted their allowances earlier

Minkyfluffster · 15/08/2017 11:29

can't you just add these items to your hand luggage?

Trunki's are going to be a pain in the arse on board the flight, they wont be able to get items out of them easily.

justkeeponsmiling · 15/08/2017 14:26

Thanks to everyone for correcting me, you may well be right and staff are more strict these days, so it's good to know I should be more careful.
And Littlelondoner that is probably the most genius Idea I have ever heard!

wonkylegs · 15/08/2017 14:41

The ordering baby stuff past security only works if your airport has a boots - the one we are flying from only has a WHSmiths and a bar Sad. It's convenient and quiet though so hopefully that will make up for the lack of facilities.

MadamPince · 15/08/2017 14:46

Even Ryanair allows a small second handbag these days - as others have said, check your airlines' regulations.

Your OH and MiL are being unreasonable if they're arguing your kid is somehow entitled to less hand luggage than an adult, though, which seems to be their angle?!

trinity0097 · 15/08/2017 16:11

If it's Thomas Cook airlines you can have a handbag as well for example

GeminiRising · 15/08/2017 16:21

I've had to put my handbag into my carry on before.

If you are taking a small-ish handbag, just buy something in the airport after going through security then stick your handbag in that bag. Flights will allow you one carry on and one bag of shopping. I've done that too and not had an issue.

sweetbabboo · 15/08/2017 16:33

If your child is old enough for their own seat they get the exact same baggage allowance as anyone else. So if you (and MIL) are permitted hand luggage plus additional small bag then so are your children. It's only infants who will sit on your knee throughout the flight who get little to no baggage allowance.

I flew Ryanair last week with my 2 year old. His luggage comprised of a big Eastpak hold-all which could be put away in the overhead locker and a smaller rucksack which held his nappies, wipes, spare clothes etc. This fitted under the seat in front.

NewPapaGuinea · 15/08/2017 18:41

If you're that worried, but it in a carrier bag and pretend it's duty free. That's what I do to get more onto a plane.

G5000 · 16/08/2017 12:49

I am puzzled by this thread.

A - If you are not sure what is the luggage allowance, you should:

  • check what airline you're flying with
  • check your booking class
  • go to that airline's website and check what the hand luggage rules are.

That's it. Takes about 2 minutes. Stropping, arguing and long discussions not necessary.

B - how on earth are posts like 'Well, I flew on a totally different airline 10 years ago and there I could/could not..' helpful?

Partypolitics99 · 16/08/2017 12:57

We once took a trunkie to th airport that we had been given!!!
Never never again, they are pains and hardly fit anything in

PrimalLass · 16/08/2017 23:01

You as an adult also only get ONE piece of hand luggage

Not on Ryanair.
