to think £200.00 on a school uniform is shocking

DC1 starts school in September he has just turned 4.
the only uniform that can be purchased from the non school uniform shop is shirt and trousers. He even has to wear a tie.

The rest even pe kit is branded with their logo. Its all come in at nearly £200.00. I only ordered 1 pe kit fingers crossed he doesn't lose them :)
Im guessing its only going to get more expensive. as next year he needs to wear a blazer. I think I will be wrestling him to get him dressed every morning :)

Oh I just started a thread on this too.
I'm actually shocked.

BBQueen · 14/08/2017 17:51

(Obviously the Tesco suggestion is for future years...)

grannytomine · 14/08/2017 17:52

I think it is madness, no need for that. Our local primary they have a sweatshirt, can be badged and most kids have the badged one but plain one in the right colour is acceptable, polo shirt as with sweatshirt can be badged or unbadged. Grey trousers or skirts. Costs about £20 for one uniform. Any t shirt and shorts for PE, if you are picked for a team the school supplies the kit. Outstanding school with good results.

Even our local grammar school doesn't have blazers.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 14/08/2017 17:52

200 pounds? i wish. Try tripling that and then add the same on again for books, stationary, contributions etc.
And no, no private school.

mygorgeousmilo · 14/08/2017 17:55

If that's going to last from September to July x5 days a week - then it's good value IMO. My kids have no uniform, and even not being ott with clothes for them, buying second hand/H&M/hand me downs/Gap sale etc. I still spend at least about 700-900 per kid, per year on normal clothes.

ALittleMop · 14/08/2017 17:57

Blazers for primary school aged kids?
The governors need to get over themselves.
That is preposterous - what an utter waste of money and the worlds' resources.

Vinorosso74 · 14/08/2017 17:57

For reception that is a lot of money in one go. There is a free school near us where they have ties and blazers, crazy in primary school. My DD doesn't have a uniform so we tend to buy clothes as and when needed rather than a bulk purchase.

treaclesoda · 14/08/2017 18:00

That's a shocking amount of money for primary school. Although I'd imagine it would be pretty cheap for secondary?

Heratnumber7 · 14/08/2017 18:01

Is it a lot for a set of clothes he'll wear all day, every day for 12 months, at least?

How much would you spend on a years worth of clothes otherwise?

Sirzy · 14/08/2017 18:01

Primary schools can't legally enforce uniform can they? (I know fighting back isnt always easy though!)

Ds school don't have strict rules on uniform, logo jumpers are only £8 (and not compulsory) yet all the children still manage to look smart!

MrsJamin · 14/08/2017 18:02

Yes the governors and/or the Headteacher are on a power trip. This needs to be challenged... But probably not in the first week of your child's schooling! I am shocked that a primary state school chooses blazers for Y1 and think that translates to being a Good school.

PoppyPopcorn · 14/08/2017 18:04

Every time I see threads like this I wonder why English parents go along with it. We're in Scotland and this "head to toe branded gear" is just NOT a thing. Yes some schools have blazers. All have ties. Primary schools sometimes have sweatshirts with logos or t-shirts with logo for PE. But apart from the ties and blazers, other items are voluntary. If you want to send your child to school in Asda pinafore and polo shirt that's fine.

Why are schools getting away with this total madness?

Dawnedlightly · 14/08/2017 18:05

Its ridiculous. And it's a lot more than the private schools I know of.
For some reason it would be considered an outrage to ask parents to buy workbooks and textbooks, tools to help their learning, but schools get away with this selection by cost. Angry

followTheyellowbrickRoad · 14/08/2017 18:11

What did you get for £200? It seems a lot as you don't have to purchase trousers and shirts from the uniform shop

Racheyg · 14/08/2017 18:12

Just for context the school jumper is £14.00.
With his preschool I had a jumper a day, I think I'm going to be doing a lot of washing. Grin

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's crazy that year 1 have to wear blazers

OP posts:
grannytomine · 14/08/2017 18:13

I don't think it lasts a 4 year old for a year, they grow out of it, they spill paint on it, they lose it and they need more than one set so you can wash it during the week.

Racheyg · 14/08/2017 18:13

follow the £200.00 is including the shirt and trousers I brought elsewhere

OP posts:
mummag · 14/08/2017 18:17

I think that is a lot of money and blazers are bonkers idea.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 14/08/2017 18:18

It is completely ludicrous that a 4 year old has to wear a blazer all day every day. Poor kids!

PoppyPopcorn · 14/08/2017 18:21

Just for context the school jumper is £14.00.

We pay £8.50 for a school sweatshirt (if you want to, not compulsory to have them) and £4 for a white tshirt with the logo for PE. And the school uniform shop still makes a profit.

Racheyg · 14/08/2017 18:23

The blazer isn't compulsory until he is 5 so year 1

OP posts:
brasty · 14/08/2017 18:23

That is awful. Far far too much.

MrsHathaway · 14/08/2017 18:25

In my experience the stupidly expensive uniforms tend to be a feature of academies, particularly new academies. Also possibly church schools.

Ironically the prestigious private schools I've attended or worked at wouldn't dream of putting primary-age pupils in stiff collars and ties, or blazers (except as outerwear).

£200 is outrageous to outlay all at once for a 4yo at state school.

If that's going to last from September to July x5 days a week

That's a bloody big "if".

SuburbanRhonda · 14/08/2017 18:30

I only ordered 1 pe kit fingers crossed he doesn't lose them

Unless you'll need the kit for a sibling, I would write your child's name in sharpie on the outside (doesn't help if the shorts are black though).

XiCi · 14/08/2017 18:34

But what did you get though for £200? Does it include coat and shoes? How many shirts /trousers? I've paid about £200 for dd (7) but I have 4 sets of uniform for that. There's no way I'd be washing every day. Friends who have kids at private pay triple that but do pick up quite a bit at school second hand sales
