Mainly because people think either:-

a) it's really weird Shock

b) it has to have some kind of sexual connection Blush

What is ASMR?

SerfTerf · 13/08/2017 17:26

Nobody will know what you mean.

EdmundCleverClogs · 13/08/2017 17:27

Right.

IAmTheDragon · 13/08/2017 17:27

I don't see how it would ever come up, tbh?

I used to have a really strong ASMR response. It's nearly gone now, which is sad.

megletthesecond · 13/08/2017 17:28

I suspect more people have it than we realise. We're a fan of gentle whispering in our house.

TheSolitaryBoojum · 13/08/2017 17:28

Is it something others need to know, or can you just say you get a weird tingly feeling sometimes, like pins and needles. You only need to explain if you want some sort of reasonable accommodation to be made for you.

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox · 13/08/2017 17:29

You don't need to tell anyone anything Hmm

I have exploding head syndrome in case this is a weird illness boasting competition

Namesarehard · 13/08/2017 17:29

Why would you tell anyone? I can't see it being a conversation starter. If find it odd if someone told me that. Not because they had it but because they'd felt the need to tell me.

rizlett · 13/08/2017 17:30

I never knew what it was for years - just that I had it!

I'd like to know if any of my family do but I'm too embarrassed to mention it.

OP posts:
SerfTerf · 13/08/2017 17:31

Why are you embarrassed?

rizlett · 13/08/2017 17:32

Whispering is not a trigger for me meg.

First time I had it was in the post office when the person behind the counter was filling in a form with my details. Confused

OP posts:
LorLorr2 · 13/08/2017 17:33

I'm pretty open with it if it's relevant to the conversation! You don't have to describe it as if it's embarrassing because then, yeah, it is weird lol. I just say it's like relaxing tingles in my head.

WunWun · 13/08/2017 17:34

I wouldn't tell anyone because they most likely couldn't care less.

GingerWh1nger · 13/08/2017 17:36

Ick! I didn't know this was a thing - is there an opposite? I just watched the Ikea ASMR ad and it genuinely set my teeth on edge, had to turn it off!

rizlett · 13/08/2017 17:44

I've not seen the ikea ad ginger but not every trigger triggers everyone iyswim.

It's not always a hearing, watching or relaxing and sending to sleep thing. Though it is all those to some people.

Nanny0gg · 13/08/2017 17:45

I don't like clicking on links.

Can anyone explain?

EngTech · 13/08/2017 17:48

Google is your friend 😀

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR)

Bimbop5 · 13/08/2017 17:49

I have this and I love watching ASMR youtube videos. I know what you mean about telling people. Is is awkward and they might think you are bizarre. But to me its like meditation, very relaxing. So I just say I watch relaxation videos. But really its not something that would come up in normal conversation. It's no biggie ☺

rizlett · 13/08/2017 17:54

I used to work for a helpline and 'relaxation' was word we used for what men were doing if they phoned and didn't talk much. Shock

I could say meditation videos - though often it happens in everyday life too.

I was very relieved when it was given a name.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 13/08/2017 17:56

Why would anyone care? Confused

Silvercatowner · 13/08/2017 17:59

I have absolutely no idea how this would come up in a conversation.

sparklefarts · 13/08/2017 18:00

Is find it weird if ou just randomly brought it up to.

I love asmr videos and have had asmr response for as long as I can remember. Its only ever come up in conversation once when I was telling my pal I watch relaxation videos to help with insomnia

ButchyRestingFace · 13/08/2017 18:02

I used to have this, not so much now.

Zero ideas why you'd want to share this info with other people though.

Can you elaborate?

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/08/2017 18:03

Really? Who would care?

MorrisZapp · 13/08/2017 18:04

I just say 'relaxing videos'.

As it happens, my two favourite asmr artists are very attractive women and I'll eat my hat if loads of men tuning in end up, er, relaxing. But that's not why I watch so I just don't think about it.
