To think this dress might be a bit too 'smart' for this night out?

I've been invited out by a work friend, we'll be out with a group of her girl-friends who are all 20/21 ish, pretty and slim.

I, by contrast, am mid thirties, chubby and a bit frumpy Sad. I spend most of my time in grubby work uniform and no make up as I rarely go out anywhere nice but I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to dress up and look/feel nice for a change.

Only trouble is I don't have much in the way of nice clothes to wear. So I bought a dress which I actually really like, is comfortable and doesn't display my jelly belly too much but I'm worried that its a bit too 'smart' for a night of drinking and clubbing with the girls! It looks a bit like something one might wear to work in an office. I really don't think I can pull off the same kind of skimpy stuff that the other girls will be wearing but I also don't want to look 15 years older than everyone else (I've been told I look young for my age but I just don't want to look ridiculous).

Aibu for thinking that this is ok to wear? Or will I look like an idiot?

Have enclosed a pic of a similar dress, the one I have is just solid black with no flowers - I'm planning to try and dress it up with sparkly heels and jewellery.

How short is it?

RedSkySuperStar · 12/08/2017 19:19

I think that'll be just fine if you jazz it up the way you describe Smile

Ginmakesitallok · 12/08/2017 19:20

Key is not to dress it up too much - sparkly heels and jewellery are for Xmas.

EchidnasPhone · 12/08/2017 19:20

I like the shape of it very much! Accessories to dress it up & it's perfect.

Bizzysocks · 12/08/2017 19:21

I don't think you can go wrong with a little black dress. I would wear chunky jewellery for your night out rather than elegant jewellery. Enjoy your night out.

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:21

I've not measured but maybe a few inches above the knee? I'm a shorty so knee length stuff looks stupid on me.

So yours is a plain black dress? It definitely depends on your shoes and accessories then, you can make it look as smart/dressy/glam as you like, that's the beauty of a lbd! What's the jewellery like? And also if it's a flattering style on you and you feel comfortable in it then that's the main thing! Clothes always look better when you feel relaxed wearing them x

Flopjustwantscoffee · 12/08/2017 19:22

I am no expert but would have thought a nice black dress appropriate in multiple situations so go for it. Also though 30s is NOT old. I am in my thirties. We're young goddamit.

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:24

Gin, I love sparkles! I would wear sparkly stuff every day of the year if I could Grin

My shoes are black, just the fronts are sparkly so they're not too over the top.

I think the one with the flowers on it would be fine but all black a bit odd for a night clubbing - however if you dress it up with the sparkly heels and some huge coloured bracelets/necklace .... why don't you ask the friends you're going with?

EnidButton · 12/08/2017 19:25

The dress is great. I agree with Gin, don't go too sparkly with your accessories. It'll be that that makes it tip over into frumpy.

If you've got time and money to buy new shoes etc, some posters in style & Beauty are very good at finding stuff.

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:26

Flop I am absolutely NOT old! Age is just a number Grin I don't care that everyone there will be younger than me, I just don't want to look like I could be their mum.

I think the dress will be great. I was wondering about the length because if it were knee length, it might be a bit office-y, but above the knee would be good for a night out.

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:31

Phew! Ok so generally if I'm careful with accessorising it will be alright?

I don't have a lot of chunky/colourful jewellery stuff as it doesn't tend to suit my bone structure/chubbiness. I mostly wear silver.

You will look lovely, like the cut.
Have a fab night out.🍷🍷🎉🎉

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:41

Thank you Grin

I am nervous though as I always tend to hide in the background feeling self conscious about not being as pretty and slim as everyone else there. I always avoid the obligatory bathroom selfies too! Actually I avoid all photos

I go out every few months and wear black jeans/jeggings and a nice top with boots in winter and sandals in summer . I wouldn't wear a dress unless was xmas party.

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:48

I normally always wear jeans and a top when I do go out but that is mostly because I feel too fat and ugly to wear anything else. But I know all the other girls will be wearing dresses so I will feel like I fit in more if I do the same! Plus it will be nice to wear something different for a change.

Just work it. Smile. Tell yourself you're fucking amazing. Keep telling yourself that. Smile. Laugh. Smile. Work it.

Have fun xx

BusyBeez99 · 12/08/2017 19:49

It's a nice dress and I think black is perfect with some nice heels it won't like over dressy. Have a lovely time - I'm mid 40s and still go out til the wee small hours so go for it!

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 19:49

These are the shoes I have to choose from, not the exact ones but similar - the sparkly black ones only have the front bit sparkly not the whole thing.

You honestly can't go wrong with a little black dress - with the accessories and shoes you're suggesting it will be lovely. Have a great time!

Big chunky statement earrings would make it feel more night out and less office, and they're very in at the moment. Nothing too elegant or neat. Hope you have a fab night!
