To think this dress might be a bit too 'smart' for this night out?

I've been invited out by a work friend, we'll be out with a group of her girl-friends who are all 20/21 ish, pretty and slim.

I, by contrast, am mid thirties, chubby and a bit frumpy Sad. I spend most of my time in grubby work uniform and no make up as I rarely go out anywhere nice but I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to dress up and look/feel nice for a change.

Only trouble is I don't have much in the way of nice clothes to wear. So I bought a dress which I actually really like, is comfortable and doesn't display my jelly belly too much but I'm worried that its a bit too 'smart' for a night of drinking and clubbing with the girls! It looks a bit like something one might wear to work in an office. I really don't think I can pull off the same kind of skimpy stuff that the other girls will be wearing but I also don't want to look 15 years older than everyone else (I've been told I look young for my age but I just don't want to look ridiculous).

Aibu for thinking that this is ok to wear? Or will I look like an idiot?

Have enclosed a pic of a similar dress, the one I have is just solid black with no flowers - I'm planning to try and dress it up with sparkly heels and jewellery.

To think this dress might be a bit too 'smart' for this night out?

love those shoes 😍 What are your hair/makeup plans? Just curious, those will make a huge difference too of course. I think the dress is cute and classy

Don't worry about the pretty/slim stuff. You'll be doing 'elegant'.

Thank you Smile

Hair/make up wise....not too sure yet?

My hair is very long and because I have to have it tied up for work 90% of the time it is in some sort of pony or plait. I'd like to have it down and either lightly curled or straight (but not straightened, its not a good look for me! My hair is naturally straight).

I'm pale so look best with a bit of colour in my lips - maybe a red or a bright pink if I'm doing neutral coloured clothes?

I once saw a woman in a club in scrappy shoes, hareem style trousers, a plain black vest top (tucked in) and a gold sparkly bolaro thing. She'd styled her hair and wore a bright red lipstick. If you break it down, the outfit was a bit of a mishmash. But she wore it so confidently she looked amazing. I think your dress sounds gorgeous. Have some confidence in yourself. And stop calling yourself fat. You've been invited out for a reason: you are fabulous!

The dress looks amazing and so do the shoes. You will look fabulous so have a bit of faith in yourself. Go out and have a brilliant night out.

I'm in my 20s and think that dress is fine. Nice shoes, bit of chunky jewellery and it'll look great. I'd also do either bright lipstick OR dramatic eyes. Not both though! It's always best to wear something that suits you, you look good and feel comfortable in.

OP can I ask where the dress in your picture is from? And I think the one you describe would be fine for your night out Smile

SharkiraSharkira · 12/08/2017 21:14

I think its from Blue Vanilla Super.

I think whilst the strap on the 3rd pair of shoes will be more comfy IMO it firmly heads that pair to the frumpy side of the scale. The middle pair look fab. Remember one can never be overdressed and the best thing you can wear is a smile!
