To eat a burger with my hands?

Happytobefree17 · 12/08/2017 16:32

In a gastro pub?

My friend is aghast that I didn't use cutlery. Thinks I'm some sort of Neanderthal for eating with my hands. Grin

Who is right?

Sorry, but I think it is revolting to eat any food, apart from sandwiches or bite sized bits and pieces, with your hands

A burger in a bun is a sandwich.

CosmicPineapple · 12/08/2017 18:28

So chicken wings....you eat them with a knife and fork? KFC? Crisps?

Jaimx86 · 12/08/2017 18:29

Kel1234, how would you eat lobster or tacos?

SenecaFalls · 12/08/2017 18:31

Mumsnet never fails at getting two side of a completely unimportant issue ranting and raving at each other.

Well, of course. And that's one of the reasons that MN provides hours upon hours of entertainment. Smile And education. I am pretty old, and I have never seen anyone eat a burger with cutlery so finding that some folks do is enlightening.

A burger is a sandwich. Sandwiches should be eaten with the hands.

Also fried chicken. I hope y'all aren't eating fried chicken with a knife and fork.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 12/08/2017 18:31

I don't eat chicken wings or KFC!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/08/2017 18:32

How do you eat crab?

CosmicPineapple · 12/08/2017 18:33

Oh god are they not posh enough for you?

Ok how do you eat your caviar?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/08/2017 18:33

How can you not eat chicken wings?

How?

fluffywhitecarpet · 12/08/2017 18:33

I can't stand people who eat with their hands when in a restaurant or a pub. This Includes pizza restaurants. I always use a knife and fork when eating out. I just think it looks much better.

Grin

Trust me, nobody is looking at you thinking you 'look better' using a knife and fork.
Saying you can't stand people who eat certain food with their hands is a bit much, some foods are intended to be eaten with hands, burgers are one of them.
Having said that, I couldn't give a shy whether someone uses cutlery or not. But I'm not a snob.

I can't stand people who eat with their hands when in a restaurant or a pub.

Snort. Imagine being this person.

feathermucker · 12/08/2017 18:35

Definitely eat a burger with your hands! Much easier!

Can't believe how many people are complaining being precious about you eating with your hands Hmm

AlpacasPackOwls · 12/08/2017 18:38

Ah mumsnet. Never fails to amaze me how much people care about unimportant things.

FWIW I eat burgers with my hands as they are sandwiches.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 12/08/2017 18:39

I have multiple allergies and cannot eat anything which contains loads of additives. I hate chicken wings anyway - all that skin and bone and no meat. I hate caviar too actually!

NashvilleQueen · 12/08/2017 18:39

I have never ever ever seen an Italian eat pizza using a knife and fork. That's good enough for me.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 12/08/2017 18:40

Pass the ketchup.

To eat a burger with my hands?
HipsterHunter · 12/08/2017 18:46

I love eating food with my hands, but a huge like at honest burger or GBK burger needs to be done with a knife and fork so you can get the perfect proportion of bread and burger onto every mouthful.

If it is a small one like McDonald that is one for the hands

lazycrazyhazy · 12/08/2017 19:01

Your friend is insane. She probably has a Spanish lady covering her "toilet brush" and nets!

hellokittymania · 12/08/2017 19:02

You are right. I always eat burgers with my hands. Unless it's the actual burger on its own with no bread. But that wouldn't really be a burger.

demirose87 · 12/08/2017 19:06

I'd cut the burger in half if it was big, eat it with hands and use a fork to eat the chips.

FrenchRoast · 12/08/2017 19:07

Dh hates eating food with his hands, so rarely orders anything vaguely messy - he's the one taking the top of his burger and eating it with a knife and fork, he does look a bit daft but he at least has the good manners to allow fellow diners to eat their burger with their hands without passing silly judge comments!

Sugarformyhoney · 12/08/2017 19:08

Lol at people using cutlery to eat burgers and sarnies- I'd think you were really odd if I was in the same restaurant 😂😂

ZippyCameBack · 12/08/2017 19:10

When I was at boarding school we were made to eat burgers in buns with a knife and fork. Ditto Mars bars when we occasionally got them instead of dessert. I thought it was pretentious wankery then and I haven't changed my mind since.
As for what other people do when they eat out, why would I care? I'd rather they didn't dribble on the carpet or throw food at the waiter, but otherwise I would be more concerned about eating my own meal rather than judging how they ate theirs.
I've never been to a gastro pub, so have no experience with oversized burgers or ridiculous plate alternatives. It doesn't sound like I've missed anything.

Sara107 · 12/08/2017 19:14

The whole point of a burger is to use your hands, that's what the bread is for! It's a sandwich, you wouldn't use a knife and fork for that. Would these shocked cutlery users eat a hot dog with cutlery? If it was a really huge, juicy burger with one of those flimsy buns that melt when you pick them up I would eat the meat with a knife and fork and then eat the bread by hand.

FrenchRoast · 12/08/2017 19:15

And most of the half decent restaurants we've been too recently have a damn fine burger on the menu, a source of pride - the messier the better!

Jux · 12/08/2017 19:21

Some food is designed to be eaten in a certain way, or using certain utensils. Pizza and burgers and chips, are street food and are designed for fingers. Likewise Cornish Pasties.

Chinese should be eaten with chopsticks, but people who can't use chopsticks are allowed to eat it, still. It just doesn't lend itself to knife and fork as well as it does chopsticks.

Really, one should eat the food in the way it's designed to be eaten, but some people can't bring themselves to use fingers in public.
