To eat a burger with my hands?

Happytobefree17 · 12/08/2017 16:32

In a gastro pub?

My friend is aghast that I didn't use cutlery. Thinks I'm some sort of Neanderthal for eating with my hands. Grin

Who is right?

OP posts:
gamerchick · 12/08/2017 17:01

I'd probably cut it in half but I have a little gob and shit falls out the sides.

I know someone who eats a cheese and onion pasty from gregs at the table with a knife and fork. I'm more eat it straight out of gregs warning the seagulls 'don't you fucking dare' as they stalk you type of person.

Isabella70 · 12/08/2017 17:01

"I once saw someone eat a sandwich with cutlery. "

I see your sandwich and raise to a banana (including peeling it...)

squoosh · 12/08/2017 17:03

I usually cut a massive gastro pub burger in half. But that would be the only contact the burger would have with some cutlery.

Albertschair · 12/08/2017 17:04

pizza maybe with a knife and fork. Maybe not.

A sarnie- nope. Fingers all the way.

Burger - nope. Fingers again.

Even really posh places accept people eat some food with hands and provide finger bowls to accommodate this.

Mumsnetting at the table is bad manners though. Nip to the loo like everyone else

vasseve1 · 12/08/2017 17:04

I assumed the queen had a butler to hold her sandwich for her while she had a nibble.

peachgreen · 12/08/2017 17:04

OP YANBU and you're also NBU to miss Wimpey! Their burger sauce is the best. FYI for anyone who lives near Teddington, the Wimpey there is still AMAZING and the service is fantastic, the owner is so nice. (I swear this isn't an ad - I just really miss that Wimpey!)

BillBrysonsBeard · 12/08/2017 17:06

I have never, ever seen anyone eat a burger with anything other than their hands! And to the poster who said it looks better with knife and fork, who cares? I don't care how I look when I eat and I'm not looking at how anyone else is doing it..

SapphireStrange · 12/08/2017 17:07

Of COURSE YANBU. There's no other way to eat a burger and fries!

Of course, for maximum showing off enjoyment you should use one hand only for the burger.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/08/2017 17:07

If I see someone eating a normal (and not overstuffed) burger with their knife and fork and cutting it into teeny tiny chunks I think they're a pretentious twat.

littlepeas · 12/08/2017 17:08

Agree with pp that it is very hyacinth bucket indeed to eat a burger with a knife and fork!! The only way it is acceptable is if you decinstruct the whole thing and leave the bun. I can just imagine the op's friend (and others on this thread) eating an afternoon tea in Claridges with a knife and fork Grin. Funny.

MakeItStopNeville · 12/08/2017 17:10

Yesterday, I ate a bun-less burger with my hands. In retrospect, that was a bad choice as I spilt avocado and mushrooms all down my top and the lettuce was greasy. Tasted good though.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/08/2017 17:10

I never eat burgers out, always eat pizza with my hands.

I do however like my bananas with cutlery, they taste better that way.

Sirzy · 12/08/2017 17:12

I use cutlery but wouldn't judge people either way. I know I am funny and use cutlery when most wouldn't!

winglesspegasus · 12/08/2017 17:15

you would be laughed out of{camara phones in use as well} any type of resturaunt, fast food joint in u.s if you used a fork.and italian gramma would stick you with your fork if you ate her pizza with itGrin

Fruitcocktail6 · 12/08/2017 17:15

I always use a knife and fork when eating out. I just think it looks much better.

Oh sorry! I didn't realise when I went out to eat in a restaurant I had to look good, in case I get judged by strangers!

TmiTuesdays · 12/08/2017 17:17

There used to be a little poem on the wall in KFC in the 80s which went 'The Colonel does not think it rude, to use your fingers for his food'. Rather liked that - though I have seen people eat KFC with cutlery before and it was bizarre. Just because it wasn't something that ever occurred to me that someone would do. Burgers same category - though agree with people fed up with the piled up gastropub versions that seem to be designed specifically as a challenge to figure out how to eat them - too big to get mouth round, only way would seem to be to deconstruct the entire thing which sort of defeats the object of it being a burger.

Actually, given the trend for 'deconstructed' whatever I'm surprised this isn't more of a thing...serving the (homemade oxtail mince) burger in thin strips, with a burger relish reduction, alongside lettuce foam, freeze-dried onion ring crumble and a tomato consommé...to be eaten off a Victorian butchers chopping block using a mini meat cleaver...

Crumbs1 · 12/08/2017 17:19

Well it would depend as clearly you can't use a knife and fork in a fast food outlet but equally you can't eat with your hands in a half decent restaurant ( but then a half decent restaurant wouldn't serve burgers). Pubs and cafes sit somewhere in between but generally where cutlery is provided it should be used as it's horrible for others to sit watching someone shovelling food in to their mouths with their hands.

CheeseAndOnionIcecream · 12/08/2017 17:19

Who on earth eats a burger with a knife and fork?! Burgers, pizza and toasted sandwiches (yes,I've seen someone use a knife and fork to eat one) are designed to be eaten with your hands.

alfagirl73 · 12/08/2017 17:20

Tbh it kind of depends on the burger. I'll usually aim to cut it in half and eat it with my hands, but if it's too big and starts to fall apart/gets too messy, I'll abandon that approach and use cutlery.

mirialis · 12/08/2017 17:23

All you people so worried about "etiquette" and whether it's Hyacinth Bucket to eat with a burger with a knife and fork... weird.

Just do what you find easiest. Even at home I eat pizza and burgers with a knife and fork because I find it easier and less messy and that means I get the most enjoyment from the food. Clearly, when eating without a table at a festival or something, it's easier to eat wrapped food with your hands.

Couldn't give a shit whether it's the "done thing" or if anyone else is looking.

Makingalist · 12/08/2017 17:27

YANBU. Cutlery - for a burger? Please...

winglesspegasus · 12/08/2017 17:27

sil is chef in fancy resturaunt and they do serve burgers(expensive ones to be sure) on buns and think eatting it with a fork is kind of off the point/cutting in half .sure.
also wonder how these people peel their shrimp.tiny little tweezers.......
oh and most fast food places here have cutlery since they serve more than burgers.
have seen the attempt to eat fried chicken with a fork tooo,,,was not pretty

littlepeas · 12/08/2017 17:27

Yes, but the op's friend was snooty about her using her hands, hence the responses about etiquette and Hyacinth Bucket!

Bluntness100 · 12/08/2017 17:30

In McDonald's clearly with your hands. In a gastro pub I'd probably cut it into quarters and eat with my hands unless it was too big. In a restaurant I'd probably use a knife and fork, I'm not sure as I've never ordered a burger in a restaurant Grin

MiladyThesaurus · 12/08/2017 17:32

DH insists on eating everything with a knife and fork but it's a symptom of his OCD rather than anything positive.
