Just popped into a charity shop on my way to the shop and Someone just said what a gorgeous little bump you've got and how far along I was....I AM NOT PREGNANT!!

So I turned to her and said ooooo about 12 weeks! I even patted my food baby 😳 I didn't even think I was particularly plump at the minute!!

I came home slightly down trodden lol my friend said I should've said I'm not pregnant but I didnt think it was nice to point it out she was trying to be friendly lol

Oh OP! What an awkward situation!

VladmirsPoutine · 12/08/2017 14:32

I've only ever seen this obsession with pregnant women on MN. It's really quite a phenomenon. Who are all these people waiting in the wings to 'out' a woman as being potentially pregnant?

VladmirsPoutine · 12/08/2017 14:34

It doesn't do anyone any favours. If said woman is pregnant she might not carry to term and if said woman is not pregnant she's essentially a bit fat. It does no-one any fucking favours!

How sweet of you. I've always answered quite snappily, but I'm usually pre menstrual when it happens Grin

Longdistance · 12/08/2017 14:37

Oh, this has happened to me before.

I just say 'oh no, I just like a bit of cake'

eatabagofdicks · 12/08/2017 14:38

Longdistance 😂😂

Flybygirly29 · 12/08/2017 14:42

Haha Longdistance 😂

It's never happened to me before! To be fair I do have two smalls so it's never going to snap back to how it was when I was 18 lol but I'd never noticed before 😂😂

It was very sweet and nice of you but - oh, I dunno. It's one of those things you shouldn't make assumptions about - enough of us, including myself, have had the "when are you due?" embarrassment, and maybe the only way to realise you don't say a word until the belly button has popped out is to be called on it when you get it wrong. But I'm probably being too harsh.

lunaysol3828 · 12/08/2017 14:49

No you should have told the bitch she doesn't get to make assumptions about a stranger. Personally I would never say anything, not even if that person's belly would go up to sky

Funny reaction tho😂

Flybygirly29 · 12/08/2017 14:50

I was totally caught off guard and she was so happy to see a "pregnant" lady! But you're right I would've hated people guessing when I was pregnant with my two especially my eldest as it took so long to get pregnant I didn't want to jinx it!!

For a moment I totally wanted to run to the gym but then remembered there was cake in the cupboard Grin

Someone offered me a seat on the train once assuming I was pregnant.

I would have been offended but it was sweltering and I was glad of the seat so I just thanked them and sat down Blush

Didn't wear that dress again though!

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/08/2017 15:08

YANBU. I did the same once! I was literally two days post birth when I decided to get the bus to town without DD. I left her with DH and got myself to the bus stop where a nice elderly lady asked when I was due.

I said "In a month!" and she said "Oh! You're quite small for 8 months along!" and I had a whole conversation with her about how my Mum was small with me too. Blush

PuppyMonkey · 12/08/2017 15:14

When I was a lot younger and very very stupid, I once bumped into a former work colleague and looked down at her belly and gushed: "ooh are congratulations in order?"

Her face, her embarrassment, her sheer confusion followed by a look of total understanding - I have never wanted the ground to swallow me up so much. I learned my lesson and never made the same mistake again. I think you should have been honest with her so that she learns not to be such a twit.

Itsnotwhatitseems · 12/08/2017 15:22

I had this once (or twice) but once recently. I was just about to light up a cigarette and this woman, bold as brass came over and said "what do you think your doing, smoking in your condition"...I explained I was just fat and not pregnant and that at my age (52) I would take it as a compliment she thought I was of an age I could be pregnant...to which she undid my way of thinking and said, oh people become pregnant at all ages now (so meaning she thought I was pregnant...but also old and pregnant)...at this point a leaflet about a voting tory campaign fell from her hand, I smiled at her, and walked away...(this was pre election, but if I had been considering voting tory then she would have just lost me) I told my family, they thought she was a horrible person as you can tell I am slim with a bit of a belly rather than pregnant! so she said it knowing I wasn't pregnant just to make me feel bad.

HipsterHunter · 12/08/2017 15:29

"Oh no love, it's just a food baby!"

Trollspoopglitter · 12/08/2017 15:32

I'm not pregnant, but since we're close enough to make personal comments on each other's appearances... when are you going to book yourself that nose job?

AztecHero · 12/08/2017 15:39

Someone on MN once said that when someone asked when she was due she replied;'About 5 years ago'.

I thought that was very funny, but am never fast enough to say anything like that in situ.

strawberrisc · 12/08/2017 15:39

Assuming somebody is pregnant has always been a complete no-go area to me. The lovely lady in my local shop is petite and her bump has been getting huge. However, until she wore a T-Shirt with "baby inside" on it - I said nothing!

BanyanTree · 12/08/2017 15:46

That happened to me. I lost a stone and a half and a receptionist in a place I frequent on occasion said Oh, you've had your baby. What was it?

LockedOutOfMN · 12/08/2017 15:52

You're too kind, flyby! I would have turned scarlet and fled the shop. I am in awe of your graciousness.

I've never mentioned anyone's "bump" unless I was a) aged under 3 and unaware that it was a social faux pas, or b) clearly informed by the person herself that she was expecting.

Clareel · 12/08/2017 20:48

Something similar happened to me recently, I was wearing a long pink kaftan cover up thing over shorts and a vest top on one of the hotter days. I had really made and effort with my hair that day and felt quite happy walking along in the sun. I even had a wolf whistle off some builders and a I overheard a little girl tell her mum "that lady looks like a princess" so was feeling quite pleased with myself all in all Grin
Then popped into a shop to buy something and the lady behind the counter complimented my outfit, then went on to say "and a lovely pregnancy bump, you must be nearly due now?". I was so mortified that I just said "yes not long now" and ran out trying not trying out cry.

I don't know what would ever possess someone to make such a statement, I wish I could have said something witty back but I was just so embarassed.

BannedFromNarnia · 12/08/2017 20:58

Urgh. It is the rudest thing.

That said, if anyone offers me a seat because they think I'm pregnant, I'm totally having it.

Flybygirly29 · 13/08/2017 08:45

Haha Hulder that's awesome!

MrsOverTheRoad I'm so glad it's not just me! I had to scarper before I created a whole story around my food baby Blush

ItsNotWhatItSeems Bless you! What a horrible old bat! I think this lady wasn't doing it to be mean she seemed so lovely!

TrollsPoopGlitter Grin amazing response!! lol! I can never think of comments like that quick enough. I always walk away and spend the next 30 minutes going...ooooo I should've said this or that lol

Thanks everyone I feel so much better knowing I'm not alone on this one! I drowned my sorrows with a family sized tub of frozen yoghurt!!
