Why are you calling it a "safe space" ?
It's actually a discussion group, open to people who are big, and identify as LBQGTI.
I'm not in those groups, nor yet a student, so , unsurprisingly, I don't know what the motivation is. I could hazard a couple of guesses- there are parts of the gay community that are incredibly body conscious, so it might be difficult if you're outside that 'norm': also having not one but two aspects of you that some unpleasant people like to sneer about, must be tough going.
But those are just guesses- and , you know what, if people have a need to have a discussion group about something that concerns them, and not me, why I would ever have an opinion about that is beyond me.
Your OP sounds a little bit like, ' hey, I don't understand this, so it must be stupid'.
