To not 'get' Pom Bear crisps

What is it with the things?
I've seen threads here where people are listing what their toddlers eat - they've always been listed in a 'these are acceptable' type of way compared to other crisps. I know people who won't feed their child crisps, 'apart from an occasional bag of Pom bears'.

I almost picked up a pack the other day - had a quick scan of the ingredients first - they are small bags but gram for gram they have more salt than walkers ready salted.

Now I don't think any child is going to keel over if they are allowed a few crisps occasionally. I'm certainly not judging. But why do so many people seem to think these are much healthier than normal crisps?

I've seen people judge other parents for allowing junk, but follow it with a comment about how their precious flower is only allowed Pom bear crisps, as if they are better?

Or do I just operate in weird circles.

i dont like them. Although they have less salt per bag, they are saltier per gram than other snacks, so make DCs palates like saltier food. This is bad for them. Simple.

ClarkWGriswold · 12/08/2017 08:46

I put Pom Bears in the same category of smug middle class parenting as giving children pure orange/apple/pineapple juice and looking rather superior to the mother giving her child a Fruitshoot. Both full of sugar and will rot children's teeth but pure juice gives out an air of middle class superiority.

wobblywonderwoman · 12/08/2017 08:49

It is an old joke on here... A bit like Naice ham and the shopping list type of thing.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2017 08:58

If anyone thinks there's anything superior about Pom Bears, they're being delusional. They're the crisp equivalent of Billy Bear sandwich meat if that still exists and I don't think many Mumsnetters will be proud to serve that to their DCs.

I think things like pom bears, quavers, pringles etc are worse than normal crisps, because they're more processed, and contain more crap than a plain slice of fried potato with a bit of salt on.

But the pack is small, so good for portion control and fun for DCs.

Pistachiois50pmore · 12/08/2017 08:59

I think OP is maybe getting quite unrepresentatively sensible replies here because I think this is definitely a thing in real life.

Obviously my PFB DS (18m) is still convinced oatcakes are a massive treat and definitely 100% what Cookie Monster is so excited about but hey.

pastabest · 12/08/2017 09:04

We have them here as they are gluten free and part of the household is coeliac. They are also meltier than normal crisps so weaning DD can suck on one (she gets cross if she sees someone eating something she isn't)

I personally can't stand them though. Chewy salty shite.

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 12/08/2017 09:17

I buy them. For me. tappity is right, they're strangely addictive. I hide them from the kids, they get quavers Wink

My 35 year old DSS loves Pom bears and I am quite partial to some myself!

PodgeBod · 12/08/2017 10:02

Aldi teddy bear crisps are nicer then real Pom bears. I get them for the kids and end up eating them myself Blush
They're just a Mumsnet in-joke, like greggs sausage rolls.

NicolasFlamel · 12/08/2017 10:09

They're popular with a couple of my friends whose kids have allergies (I cant remember what to).
They're still crisps at the end of the day but I guess there's less guilt when stuff is animal shaped Grin

Decaffstilltastesweird · 12/08/2017 10:10

I don't think anyone honestly thinks they're healthier than normal crisps, except that you get less in a packet. If anyone honestly thinks they're a healthy option, they're a bit silly. They're crisps! Not a health food.

I know what you mean though. They're definitely 'children's crisps'. Same thing with those Barney Bear cake bar things.

Re Quavers; a friend of mine used to do Weight Watchers and these were her go to crisps ("if you must eat some crisps, go for quavers or skips" type thing). Maybe some adults think that makes them healthier?

Notevilstepmother · 12/08/2017 11:43

It that because they are all air and therefore no calories?! Grin

Orangebird69 · 12/08/2017 11:46

I bloody love Pom Bear crisps. Ds has the odd one or two out of a pack and i eat the rest. They don't scratch his mouth and they practically melt to nothing so not much of a choking hazard.

Crispbutty · 12/08/2017 11:50

The pizza flavour Pom bears were amazing. Just like some crisps called bitsa pizza when I was a kid.

As with anything I like they bloody stopped making them Angry

BlurryFace · 12/08/2017 11:50

They're a bit like quavers skips and wotsits in that they are soft and melt in the mouth, so if your child doesn't chew properly they won't get stabbed in the throat by a sharp bit of crisp. They're pretty low calorie, but don't really feel like it because you get a good amount in the bag. They're shaped like teddies which makes them a bit more fun for kids.

JuicyCake · 12/08/2017 11:50

They actually like used to be lovely. Nice & crunchy. Got some recently & they're greasy mess now. Why do they have to ruin all the nice things???

TakeThatFuckingDressOffNow · 12/08/2017 11:51

I LOVE Pom Bears!

TurquoiseDress · 12/08/2017 11:52

ooh I love Pom bear crisps!

and Quavers too

[gets coat and leaves]

CockacidalManiac · 12/08/2017 11:52

They are gluten free. Therefore much better and healthier for the child. Less chavvy.

So gluten is chavvy now? This place gets weirder.

Maelstrop · 12/08/2017 11:54

They are gluten free. Therefore much better and healthier for the child. Less chavvy.

Less chavvy?! Most ridiculous thing I've read on here ll week! How is being gluten free better if a child isn't a coeliac? They're not healthier, they're crisps.

CockacidalManiac · 12/08/2017 11:54

Quavers and pom bears are great. Skips taste like shit. The best 'non-crisp' crisp is a toss up between pickled onion Monster Munch and tomato flavour Snaps though.

JuicyCake · 12/08/2017 11:55

Crispbutty, I remember those pizza crisps! And the pizza Pom Bears.
Think if I could bring back any crisp it would be Phileas Fog (?) Mignons Morceau (??) or the original PF Tortilla Chips.

martiniwini · 12/08/2017 11:59

Sorry maelstrop, my sarcasm clearly failed to reach your level.

The best non crisp crisps are salt&vinegar squares!!

CockacidalManiac · 12/08/2017 12:08

I do still have a place in my heart for salt and vinegar Twirls; they were spiral shapes. I used to dip them in soup in the 80s.
