To think this should be illegal?

Firstly you've got "hair" and then you've got "Afro hair" like black people's hair is somehow not just normal hair.

And then to charge black people 50% more than white people for their natural hair?

To think this should be illegal?

It's a children's salon so it's 6 pound more than the "children's cut" .

my dn has afro hair fucking loads of it and she has to go to a specialist hairdressers as it is actually harder to deal with and takes longer so my sil is charged more for the extra time it takes

OlennasWimple · 11/08/2017 09:35

The price chart is clearly set by how long the appointment will last, though, and Afro hair takes longer to cut.

I can see your objection, though

TheUpsideDown · 11/08/2017 09:36

Doesn't afro hair require a more specialised hairdresser though?

I'm not saying it should necessarily cost more to cut, but I think it helps a person with afro hair to know this particular salon has stylists who are experienced in styling and cutting afro hair?

I'm just speculating here. I don't have afro hair. But I do have long curly hair, and need a specialist hairdresser who knows how to deal with it, and I have to pay more for it.

LadyWithLapdog · 11/08/2017 09:38

I am a female and have short straight hair. My haircut is always more expensive than men's haircuts. I don't feel discriminated against :) It's still more work.

19lottie82 · 11/08/2017 09:38

Illegal? Give it a rest! Confused
If you were a hairdresser would you be happy to work twice as long for the same money working on Afro hair than on Afro hair? Pfft.......

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 11/08/2017 09:39

goat because afro hair is more difficult to handle. It takes a certain kind of hairdresser to deal with afro hair.
I wouldn't be able to cut afro hair because I'm not trained, that's why I have a hairdress er who specialises in afro hair. For me to do a simple dry cut on straight hair depending on length would take me 10-15 minutes. The other lady would take about 30.

permalice · 11/08/2017 09:39

There is a genuine difference on how long hair appointments take depending on type of hair.

I think it is reasonable to price by expected time and complexity of what is going to be done.

What is the parallel term to 'Afro' hair that should be used to avoid othering? I know that asking displays my ignorance, but I am hoping someone will educate me.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/08/2017 09:47

I'm half black and can confirm that dealing with afro hair can at times be a bit like going into battle. Some come out unscathed... others will forever remember our mothers sitting us between her legs with comb in hand, oil in other. I still have flashbacks Grin.

No it shouldn't be illegal.

demirose87 · 11/08/2017 09:50

Yes I can why it can be seen as wrong but I think its because it takes longer to cut and needs more care. I had a hairdresser friend a few years ago and she had to go on separate training for afro hair.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/08/2017 09:51

Actually, I would be reassured by this price list.

It means they have a specialised hairdresser who knows how to handle afro hair and that they have factored in the time needed.

I sort of see that you are upset it's separated, but it's a different skill so that would be the reason it's listed separately.

scottishdiem · 11/08/2017 09:51

Why illegal? You do know that different hair types can take a lot longer to cut and style?

My DP is a black Zimbabwean and I have seen actual family hair parties where the wigs, weaves and extensions all come out, natural hair is then untied, brushed in what looks like very painful manner and then new styles applied/tied up again for the wigs. This takes ages.

Travis1 · 11/08/2017 09:54

YABU. It's a completly different style of hair that takes longer to cut/style. It's the same as my hair costing more because it's longer than shoulder length than someone with a pixie cut.

RelaxMax · 11/08/2017 10:01

I see what you mean about not liking "hair" vs "Afro hair" but I'm not sure what would be better? If they put "Afro hair" and "Caucasian/Eurasian/Asian/Inuit/Maori/etc etc hair" it would get a bit long and impractical as a price list.

Papafran · 11/08/2017 10:04

Well, many salons have a 'long hair' and 'thick hair' policy of charging extra (something I have had to pay). Afro hair is harder to deal with and takes longer. oh and it's not afro vs white hair, it's afro vs asian, middle eastern, south american/ whatever other race. They only make an exception for afro hair.

MissionItsPossible · 11/08/2017 10:04

I know women that go to the hairdressers at 09:30 and don't leave until after 22:00. So yes, YABU to think that that amount of work wouldn't require a higher charge.

HeyRoly · 11/08/2017 10:05

Although I appreciate that most hairdressers have no experience with Afro hair and you need to factor in additional time, etc. there is something unpleasant and discriminatory about it. Afro hair as difficult and "not the norm" Hmm

I read an interesting column in the Guardian the other week about this exact topic, funnily enough. I'll see if I can find it.

Papafran · 11/08/2017 10:07

My colleague has afro hair. She says it takes 8 hours to do her braided extensions. If you live in London, there are loads of specialist salons specialising in afro hair and miles cheaper (and probably better) than going to a normal salon and paying extra. Not much help if you live somewhere without a large afro-Caribbean population though....

FoxyRoxy · 11/08/2017 10:08

Why should it be illegal to charge more for a service that costs more to provide in terms of time and training? Afro hair is different to Caucasian hair, no one is being discriminated against.

ComputerUserNotTrained · 11/08/2017 10:08

Presumably if a child with afro hair needed a "tiny trim" they wouldn't be charged full afro rate.

Viviennemary · 11/08/2017 10:09

I think it's reasonable. Because long hair is more expensive too. It's the length of time it takes that is setting the price.

Sinead9 · 11/08/2017 10:17

My hairdresser offers men a quick cut for a fiver, which is a good bit less than I pay. They're not sexist, it just takes more time to do mine.

InFairness · 11/08/2017 10:17

I think it should depend on the style because not all afro haircuts will be more difficult or time consuming.

BabychamSocialist · 11/08/2017 10:18

Nah, it's not illegal nor should it be. My friend with 'afro' hair is always saying how much fuss it is to keep how she wants it - it's why she always tips her hairdresser well.

Afro hair really does take a lot more work and a more specialist hairdresser, so it will obviously cost more. Not sure why that would be illegal?
