To think this should be illegal?

Firstly you've got "hair" and then you've got "Afro hair" like black people's hair is somehow not just normal hair.

And then to charge black people 50% more than white people for their natural hair?

To think this should be illegal?

You think it should be illegal to charge more for something that talked longer to do and requires different training?

SoupDragon · 11/08/2017 16:26

Are there other types of hair than Afro and the smoother flyaway hair that other races have? Apart from mixed race hair which I guess can fall anywhere between the two. I thought Non Afro hair was basically all the same.

Seeingadistance · 11/08/2017 16:28

I have a short haircut, and I have asked barbers if they would cut it, and the answer from the 3 I've asked so far has been "No, we don't do women's hair".

There is no difference between a woman's hair and a man's hair.

I have an undercut - a cut which is more often seen on a man's head than a woman's, and it doesn't take long to cut. I now trim the backs and sides myself with clippers.

RhubardGin · 11/08/2017 16:35

Be made illegal?

Afro hair is more complex to work with and usually requires a longer appointment time, of course it will cost more.

Woman's hair cuts are usually more expensive than men's....should that be made illegal as it could be seen as sexism?

Get a grip OP.

A typical case of "I've found something to be offended about" without the poster actually doing any research!

^ this

YABU and ridiculous.

WomblingThree · 11/08/2017 16:45

Seeingadistance it's bloody aggravating isn't it. I have a short back and sides, number 2, and longer on top. It is literally no different from a men's cut, and I have been having it done at the barber's for years as I can't stand being fiddled and fussed with. It's a 10 minute haircut, same as a bloke would get. Costs me £9.50.

My regular barber has now decided they are only doing men, so I had to find another. It's their loss, as they did lots of women who have all had to find somewhere else. Must be nice to be able to afford to turn down paying customers.

kaytee87 · 11/08/2017 16:50

Op can I ask if you have Afro hair?

My friends with Afro hair pay more than me to get their hair done because it takes longer, yes even for a simple cut.

RedSandYellowSand · 11/08/2017 17:19

Yes, Asian hair must be different to European hair, as 2 hairdressers have started on DS1s hair, looked at me a bit puzzled and mentioned his hair isn't European. And they are right. It's an Eurpoean/SEAsian mix.

And I'd say middle eastern hair must be different again, because for the life of me i can't get a decent hair cut at home, so its a hack at it job myself for 10 months, then get it cut twice over the summer to sort out the bridge jobs.

MikeUniformMike · 11/08/2017 17:29

Asian hair is different to Caucasian hair. Mediterranean/North African/Middle Eastern hair is too.
You need to go to a hairdresser who can cut your hair.
A hairdresser who doesn't know how to cut your type of hair isn't likely to give you the haircut you want.
You wear your hair 24/7/365.

VikingVolva · 11/08/2017 17:31

Firstly you've got "hair" and then you've got "Afro hair" like black people's hair is somehow not just normal hair.

Fair point.

Perhaps the price list should be for hair, then non-Afro hair could be specified with a price listed separately.

NSEA · 11/08/2017 17:36

I think you're objecting about some kid of differentiating here, as though jts a form of segregation. But it's not actually offensive to point out differences between genetic traits.

Not long ago I know someone who was reprimanded at work when a boy went missing from one of her classes. She was asked to describe him and when she said 'he's black' (amongst other things such as height etc) the admin team tutted and said 'you can't say that'. She was pulled in to a management review accused of racism. It's not racism to point out differences. It's more racist to suggest pointing out differences is wrong.

LivingInMidnight · 11/08/2017 17:46

There's a big difference between say 4c and 3b hair though. At what point does the price go up?

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/08/2017 17:49

NSEA a friend of mine once told me that she'd listened to someone trying to describe her hair colour/ eye colour/ features etc. for about five minutes without mentioning that she's black, she found it really funny.

It shouldn't be illegal to charge different prices for different level of skill/ time taken to do something, which would be obvious anywhere other than mn.

Orangebird69 · 11/08/2017 17:50

Yabu

marcopront · 11/08/2017 18:22

Speaking as the mother of a mixed race child I would there is no such thing as a basic cut for Afro hair. I only trust specialist hairdresser to cut DD's hair.

I don't live in the U.K. but will only trust a hairdresser there to do my highlights. I had them done in Kenya once they lasted a couple of days as the dye wasn't left on long enough for my hair type.

BabyBlueToo · 11/08/2017 18:39

I don't see an issue with it at all.

Afro hair isn't like generic 'normal' run of the mill hair, it's much more complicated to treat and look after, cut etc etc.

Not sure why this would offend you, let alone you thinking it should be illegal

kali110 · 11/08/2017 18:47

Bugger off with it should be illegal!
Do you know anything about hairdressing or afrocarribean hair?
If you do a hairdressing course you won't be taught it as it's a specialised field.
Not everyone can cut or style this style of hair.
It can take longer and needs someone who has The skills, else you end up with a crap cut.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 11/08/2017 19:00

There is a unisex salon I know of that doesn't cut women's hair if it isn't African hair. Someone went there and was told "We don't do white women's hair". She was outraged. I am tempted to go there to find out if it is true

I would imagine it is true. And why shouldn't it be? She is very silly to be outraged. It's a specialist salon and they can choose their clientele as they choose.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 11/08/2017 19:00

as they like, I mean.

fuckingbubbling · 11/08/2017 19:34

My niece has Afro hair and my sister is perfectly okay with it costing more to cut because it's a massive chore just to wash it and comb it through with conditioner!
Put your fucking pathetic attempt at the race card away. Next you'll be saying that shops shouldn't be allowed to charge more for specialist shampoos and conditioners for Afro hair. Get a grip FFS

Amanduh · 11/08/2017 19:39

You are being ridiculously stupid. Stop trying to say they're somehow impying black hair isn't normal. Ffs.

LogicalPsycho · 12/08/2017 23:25

In a lot of clothing stores, a Size 6 dress is a cheaper than a Size 26 dress.
You pay for the goods used to supply the product, and you need much more material to make the larger dress.

A basic haircut for Caucasian hair is far less time-consuming and requires less specialist knowledge than Afro hair does.
You could probably fit three Caucasian hair appointments into the time it takes to give one good cut on Afro hair.

Makes sense to me that it's because of the skills and time needed only, not because the hairdresser is prejudiced ffs
