to think £53 for a hygienist appointment is pretty steep?

Moved to a new part of the country - the south west from the midlands and used to paying around the £30 mark for a hygienist session. Went today and the appointment lasted 15 mins and I was faced with a £53 bill. I was a little shocked and the receptionist just mumbled 'didn't anyone tell you the price when you booked?' And looked accusingly at her colleague as if to say 'this again'.

I don't mind paying. I get it's private and they do a thorough clean but £53 just seems a bit of a piss take. It's too much for me to have done regularly now Angry

£55 for 30 minutes in Surrey

CatsMother66 · 11/08/2017 19:19

I've got it good apparently reading all your replies. I pay £13 a month and that gets me two dentist checks and four hygienist appointments a year.

£65 yesterday for a 30 minute very deep clean in Edinburgh. I used to pay £12.50 when I lived in Newcastle but that was for 15 minutes and was more of a scale and polish. My teeth feel squeaky clean now!

Jigglyguff · 11/08/2017 19:41

A scale and polish should actually be included in the band 1 payment if your dentist says it is necessary.

Jigglyguff · 11/08/2017 19:48

It would just be done by the dentist instead of the hygienist.

Shit mine is really expensive!! £140 for an hour appointment. Private dentist in the South. She did a very good job though and the chair was very comfortable! I think it was weaning me in gently for £1300 bill from the dentist this week.

£55 in Surrey.
I do think it's a lot. Obviously we are all in the wrong 'game' here!!?

Oldieandgoldie · 11/08/2017 20:49

So, on a normal, routine visit, do you see the hygienist before or after the dentist check up?
(Mine has just changed from before to after)

LaGattaNera · 11/08/2017 20:55

I see hygienist first then dentist. Although £55 may seem dear, when you think the fees have to cover the building and all the non-dentist staff & utilites & insurance and equipment, it doesn't seem too bad to me for half an hour.

BusterGonad · 11/08/2017 20:56

I've just paid £96 for a white filling! I'm a bit shocked as it's my first one in about 20 years!

Artistic · 11/08/2017 20:58

Mine charges £105 for 30 minutes. Blush
But then it's Harley Street @ London. I've tried elsewhere £40-50 and they don't seem to compare.

Fairylea · 11/08/2017 22:58

I haven't seen a hygienist in about 6 years. I just can't afford it (low income, carer, disabled child). Touch wood I've been very lucky and haven't needed any dental care for about 7 years despite 6 monthly checks so must be doing something right. Confused
