to think £53 for a hygienist appointment is pretty steep?

Moved to a new part of the country - the south west from the midlands and used to paying around the £30 mark for a hygienist session. Went today and the appointment lasted 15 mins and I was faced with a £53 bill. I was a little shocked and the receptionist just mumbled 'didn't anyone tell you the price when you booked?' And looked accusingly at her colleague as if to say 'this again'.

I don't mind paying. I get it's private and they do a thorough clean but £53 just seems a bit of a piss take. It's too much for me to have done regularly now Angry

Private dentist I used 4 years ago, hygienist charged £57 for 10 minutes.
(First time I had used this practise - N. Derbyshire village - was told I had to see hygienist before any treatment. I only wanted a small filling replaced)

After just 7 minutes the hygienist stopped abruptly and claimed I needed a second appointment to finish the job at a further £57. 🤔 (Had only seen another hygienist the year before and I take care of my teeth extremely well on a daily basis)

Suffice to say I did not make a second appointment and never used this practise again. I also emailed a complaint but received no response. 😡

ShellyBoobs · 10/08/2017 22:53

It's £59 at my dentist (Yorkshire).

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/08/2017 22:56

£35 and I'm in the south west. £53 does seem a bit steep.

YerAWizardHarry · 10/08/2017 23:01

My NHS dentist does a scale for me (it's generally only my lower incisors that "need it) at the end of each of my check ups for £16

Iseesheep · 10/08/2017 23:06

Is £35 the NHS cost? If so it's not as thorough as using the hygienist and paying for the 30 min appointment privately. I've done both and won't use the NHS again!

It's sad that the NHS dental service is just a quick fix of a problem service rather than a good service that'll take care of your teeth in the long term. Particularly as you only get the one set. It doesn't seem preventative to me at all.

The80sweregreat · 11/08/2017 07:38

Ours is about 52 ( essex) but you have to be referred by the dentist ( mine is an NHS dentist)
She hasnt referred me for a few years, so i've left it.

Therealslimshady1 · 11/08/2017 07:42

35 in South East (posh town)

HazelBite · 11/08/2017 07:48

I paid 60 last week (Hertfordshire)

SleepFreeZone · 11/08/2017 07:51

I pay £60 😬

Crispsheets · 11/08/2017 07:51

£80 London .
And £1400 for gum surgery in 2 weeks 🤤

KittyVonCatsington · 11/08/2017 07:52

I pay £60 in London. In your OP, you highlight the reason-some parts of the country are more expensive than others! It's not right but is the way it is...

Crunchymum · 11/08/2017 07:54

£55 central London. Surgery takes private and NHS patients but cost of hygienist is the same for everyone.

Batfurger · 11/08/2017 07:54

Manky teeth? Lovely. Maybe brush them properly yourself and save £53? Fairly simple solution.

sleepyMe12 · 11/08/2017 07:55

£90 at mine in south east London se14.
I used to pay £40 and get them done every 3 months after the price shot up I've not had them done in over a year Blush

juneau · 11/08/2017 08:09

I live near London and pay £49 for a half-hour slot with my hygienist. She is quite hard to get appointments with and always busy.

GhostsToMonsoon · 11/08/2017 08:40

I pay £45 in the Midlands so not much less. I have only been once and hope I can stop after my next visit.

SquirmOfEels · 11/08/2017 08:49

£50, London

Dentist will scrape off the worse as part of NHS check up, further needs doing by hygienist. I'm just unlucky to be born into a family that lays down lots of tartar (happens to all of us, even though other aspects of oral health are immaculate).

SurferRona · 11/08/2017 09:03

£70 for 30 mins at my NHS dentist practice!!! I'm in the south. Theres a plan that you get 10% off NHS costs if you join - but no reduction on hygienist v expensive fee ConfusedConfused

HipsterHunter · 11/08/2017 09:05

Mines £80 which I thought was pretty normal.

40 mins of their time; premises costs, reception staff, equipment etc

ElsieMc · 11/08/2017 09:05

I paid £60 for half an hour, with a choice of shorter times at cheaper (but not much). I thought it was outrageous.

My dentist always tells everyone to go to the hygienist before commencing treatment. She was okay, better than my previous practice.

Sadly the longstanding practice we attended for over 20 years was sold a few years back and we lost confidence in some of the new staff for a variety of reasons - bad body odour, not being able to meet your eyes when he spoke to you and being ignored by the practice owner (although she knew us all) in the corridor. Sorry, but I don't pay big bucks to not even be treated with basic courtesy. All the original dentists have left.

The new practice has clearly benefitted from this shambles and charges mega bucks. No, we are not in London, but a small practice in the NW.

HipsterHunter · 11/08/2017 09:06

Everyone should be going to the hygenest 2x a year minimum even with impeccable brushing and flossing

KittyVonCatsington · 11/08/2017 09:08

Manky teeth? Lovely. Maybe brush them properly yourself and save £53? Fairly simple solution.

Rude and uncalled for. Brushing and flossing daily is not enough to get all tartar and placque in all areas. If more people used a hygienist, there would be less need for dentures in later life.

dollydaydream114 · 11/08/2017 09:18

I pay about £35 in Manchester city centre but looking at these posts there are other people in Manchester and the wider NW paying different amounts so maybe geography isn't a factor and I guess you might just need to shop around.

lljkk · 11/08/2017 10:00

£36 for about 20 minutes recently, rural Norfolk.

peachgreen · 11/08/2017 10:56

I pay £11 a month and get all my dental and hygienist treatment for free. Grin So if I don't have any work done other than 2 x dentist visits and 2 x hygienist it costs me £33 per visit, which is pretty good. And it was a lifesaver when I cracked a tooth.

Manky teeth? Lovely. Maybe brush them properly yourself and save £53? Fairly simple solution.

Absolute nonsense. You can't possibly clean your own teeth as well as a hygienist can, no matter how vigilant you are. I've worked in the dental industry and would never miss a hygienist appointment.
