to be mildly miffed by ALDI shopper?

Yeah, I know I'll get flamed, but I have just got to vent... on the way home tonight I nipped in to ALDI and the woman in front just didn't seem to know how to ALDI (this should be a verb)

She had a full trolley (I had a basket with 4 items in - no, I didn't expect to go in front of her although it might have been nice ) which she proceeds to unload on to the conveyor belt ONE FECKING ITEM AT A TIME. Seriously... one thing at time and then rearranging everything to the extent that by the time she had finished faffing about the poor checkout assistant had already filled that little space at the end of the till

And then... she carefully lined up her bags in her trolley and faffed even more putting everything in to bags ONE ITEM AT A TIME...

Seriously? It's not Waitrose... or ASDA... there is bloody great shelf for packing your stuff away - you bung your stuff on the conveyor belt then bung it back in your trolley and THEN faf about packing on the shelf they so nicely provide for you! It's a speedy shopping place

The entire queue behind you, you drippy mare was getting very annoyed; could you not feels the waves of irritation wafting your way????

Oh, and if they staff are actually marked on speed you have buggered up the poor, patient assistant's stats tonight

(Thank feck one of my 4 items was wine - it goes well with venting)

I'm with you. I hate slowness in Aldi. You don't pack at the till unless you're doing the Aldi challenge with a huge ikea bag Angry

I also hate the dithering in the aisles while people choose carefully and block the place up. Move the fuck out of the way Angry

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2017 18:40

Ooh no that's not Aldi-ing at all is it? All wrong. Angry

Did the assistant bark 'CASH OR CARD?' extra loud to express their annoyance?

Chestervase1 · 10/08/2017 18:40

Aldi sounds a lovely place

SpottedGingham · 10/08/2017 18:40

To be fair the first time I went to Aldi I did much the same Blush

Now I lob everything into the trolley as fast as they scan with the best of them. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2017 18:41

Aldi is alright but not a place to linger any longer than is absolutely necessary IMO.

shamoffour · 10/08/2017 18:42

Ooh I would have been cross! I consider myself a bit of an aldi shopping expert and that is just wrong.

NancyDonahue · 10/08/2017 18:42

Yanbu. The checkout operator should have told her to hurry up.

It's the checkout Olympics at my local. There's no way anyone can pack at the till unless they have some decent trolley baggage system and can slide everything straight in. And the etiquette is to always let someone with a basket go in front if you have a trolleyful.

Heathcliff27 · 10/08/2017 18:43

Yy why do they always ask cash or card? What difference does it make?

charleyfarleysaunt · 10/08/2017 18:44

Sparklingbrook nope, bless her she was incredibly patient and even carefully piled stuff up so it didn't do a Jenga crash - it was the rest of us shoppers who were ready to bark and quite possibly lynch the woman!

NancyDonahue · 10/08/2017 18:45

They have to press a button for the card machine to work.

gamerchick · 10/08/2017 18:46

Yy why do they always ask cash or card? What difference does it make?

The same reason self service tills ask the same question?

Aeroflotgirl · 10/08/2017 18:46

Oh god that sounds like me, but I do bring huge bags that I can bung everything in fast but in order.

drinkingtea · 10/08/2017 18:47

I can pack into bags at aldi when doing a 100€ full trolley for a family of 5, without holding the queue up. Maybe it should be my party trick - ten years of experience at hard core German Aldi where the cashier would sweep stuff into your trolley if it built up Wink

You get your bags ready before entering the shop and pack into them as you shop, unload onto til, reload into same bags. It only works when doing the start of the month freezer and dry goods re-stock, not if buying squash able perishables.

Nobody really packs on the shelf here, that's just for faffing with your wallet/ putting your toddler on while you chat to Frau Mair about how shockingly the price of butter has increased before returning to your hugely expensive BMW SUV WinkConfused

drinkingtea · 10/08/2017 18:50

They ask cash or card to either activate the card machine or pre count your change on the assumption that you will pay with a note.

The also apprenticeships are apparently proper hardcore; have you noticed how a busy store is often being entirely run by two or three multitasking triathletes?

AdalindSchade · 10/08/2017 18:50

I was in lidl recently and the woman in front was the absolute archetype of an Ocado shopper who has come to lidl and loaded her trolley with £100s of stuff in wonderment. She was wittering loudly to the checkout person about how marvellous all the bargains were and slowly packing her things while the checkout operator tried valiantly to pile her stuff without it dropping. Then she innocently said 'the only thing I don't like is these ridiculously short check out areas! why don't they make them bigger?' The checkout person responded through gritted teeth 'they want you to pack over there'. Oh! She says. Oh! Eventually noticing the queue of foot tapping and huffing experienced lidlers waiting for her to get a fucking move on.

charleyfarleysaunt · 10/08/2017 18:51

NancyDonahue I wish basket v trolley etiquette applied in our local ALDI!

To be fair last month a confused chap was incredibly slow and even more faffing, but he clearly didn't have a clue and looked a bit lost and the lovely staff hoiked his stuff over to the packing shelf and helped him - this lady definitely didn't seem confused... just slow and bloody annoying

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2017 18:51

They get very arsey at our Aldi if you don't put the trolley right for packing/throwing stuff in.

If Aldi had self scan or self check out tills I might go more often but I find the whole shop a bit of a downer as an experience.

Schvitzing · 10/08/2017 18:53

Utterly unacceptable. I hope you tutted audibly.

charleyfarleysaunt · 10/08/2017 18:58

Schvitzing... sorry, far too 'British' for that, but I did stand with folded arms staring at her with a face like a slapped fish (my face, not hers obviously)

I turned round to see if I was the only one irritated and the rest of the queue had the same look on their face, were rolling their eyes, grinding their teeth and shifting restlessly, pretty sure there was tutting further back though

Bunnyfuller · 10/08/2017 18:58

No one packs at the end in our Aldi, thy all have bags open in their trolleys and just pack fast

welshweasel · 10/08/2017 19:00

I pack straight into bags, but the checkout operatives have no issue doing the sweep of shame if too slow. And everyone seems to understand the basket etiquette. It's a vair vair posh Aldi though, I preferred it before they refurbished it as the car park is always bloody full now.

stupidcoldfeet · 10/08/2017 19:00

I didn't know any of this! Blush

I have commented to the cashier how quick she is when everything piled up.

SueGeneris · 10/08/2017 19:01

I love our local Aldi. The staff are all always very friendly and helpful. I bought two huge items of children's furniture there the other week - one assistant saw me looking and offered to carry items down to the till and keep them there til I was finished; when I got to the till the different assistant there knew they were for me and had already arranged with another colleague for him to carry them out to the car for me.

I do love beat the checkout though. For me the trick is to pile items up in threes or fours and put them in the trolley together.

And I always let people with baskets go ahead.

emilybrontescorset · 10/08/2017 19:02

I hate having to put everything into a trolley, then take it out again and put it all on the conveyor belt. Then put it all back in the trolley , then pack it into bags. Then put it into my car only to have to unpack it all again when I get home!

dingit · 10/08/2017 19:03

I always do the aldi Olympic packing, but will let someone in front of me with a few items Halo

I love to shop in Tesco every so often, and pack luxuriously ( note to self, need to get out more) Grin
