Yeah, I know I'll get flamed, but I have just got to vent... on the way home tonight I nipped in to ALDI and the woman in front just didn't seem to know how to ALDI (this should be a verb)

She had a full trolley (I had a basket with 4 items in - no, I didn't expect to go in front of her although it might have been nice ) which she proceeds to unload on to the conveyor belt ONE FECKING ITEM AT A TIME. Seriously... one thing at time and then rearranging everything to the extent that by the time she had finished faffing about the poor checkout assistant had already filled that little space at the end of the till

And then... she carefully lined up her bags in her trolley and faffed even more putting everything in to bags ONE ITEM AT A TIME...

Seriously? It's not Waitrose... or ASDA... there is bloody great shelf for packing your stuff away - you bung your stuff on the conveyor belt then bung it back in your trolley and THEN faf about packing on the shelf they so nicely provide for you! It's a speedy shopping place

The entire queue behind you, you drippy mare was getting very annoyed; could you not feels the waves of irritation wafting your way????

Oh, and if they staff are actually marked on speed you have buggered up the poor, patient assistant's stats tonight

(Thank feck one of my 4 items was wine - it goes well with venting)

I was told off as an Aldi virgin for packing into bags and that there's a 'packing area' I'm well quick now although if you don't have a £ for the trolley and have to use baskets that's a fine art and it alarms if you try to pack into baskets and walk out

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 20:00

I may have once huffed at a woman who bought 12 bottles of prosecco and put them ALL on the conveyer. Rather than placing one, nodding at the trolley and saying 'there's 12

I was told off for that in Aldi, they wanted to scan them individually.

Nonibaloni · 10/08/2017 20:01

Trolley bags (google it, I can't do links). So its one beautiful motion. It's like the ballet but with fruit.

My local Aldi has the slider things that supermarkets used to have. So if you're taking all the love long day (looking at you mother), they shove it all to other side and let the next one in. I love it.

Went to Sainsbury's the other day and almost left without the shopping because it was painful to watch.

theymademejoin · 10/08/2017 20:01

I think I'd love to do a proper Aldi as I'm really fast and I love a challenge but they just don't do it where I live in Ireland. I think they tried when they first arrived but nobody was having any of it. I have never seen anyone use the shelf at the back and the cashiers, while not slow, aren't particularly fast. They certainly don't sweep your stuff into your trolley if you're slow! They just wait until there's room.

Unicorn81 · 10/08/2017 20:07

Hate people who cant ALDI

hippyhippyshake · 10/08/2017 20:09

I want those trolley bags but a) have never seen them in action to know if they are worth the money and b) am scared of looking a twat. Us peeps who Waitrose have Waitrose's own green trolley bags and I wouldn't want to stand out.

MyBlackCat · 10/08/2017 20:11

It's all about how you load the conveyor belt - I'm such a pro my DH just leaves me to it and watches me. If he tries to help it all goes tits up. He cannot load a conveyor belt correctly Grin

SleepThief84 · 10/08/2017 20:11

No one uses the packing shelf in our Aldi! The only thing its used for us kids sitting on it HmmI am a speedy packer now though. While I'm queuing I get as many bags as I need out, open and in my trolley ready then pack as it's scanned.

GlitterGlue · 10/08/2017 20:12

She wouldn't have got away with that shit in my local Aldi. The staff would have well and truly told her.

QuietNinjaTardis · 10/08/2017 20:13

I hated aldi when I first started shopping there. Fucking love it now.

I live in fear of not going fast enough for our Aldi checkout operators. I'm pretty sure they all came to work there after the fall of the Berlin wall and they were trained by the Stasi.

OK, maybe not, but they really do fling the stuff off the conveyors at a breakneck speed!

BroomstickOfLove · 10/08/2017 20:20

Yes, once you get used to Aldi, other supermarkets are frustratingly slow. And have too much choice between virtually identical things.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 10/08/2017 20:22

I work in retail and faffers drive me demented.

Therefore I have made it my life's work to become a packing Ninja and can pack straight back into the trolley be it in Aldi, Lidl or Tescos often at a faster pace than the cashier. It has been known for the cashier to tip their head in a knowing way when they say "You're quick!" and I say "I work in a shop." and we share a delicious knowing moment of solidarity against all the faffers

nocoolnamesleft · 10/08/2017 20:27

And this is why I've never dared go there...

gamerchick · 10/08/2017 20:29

My brainz exactly man Grin I visit our Asda sometimes and my head explodes and I leave feeling annoyed.

shamoffour · 10/08/2017 20:32

I use the ikea bags in my trolley but I'm not fussy what goes where.
However there was a genius idea on one of the aldi threads on here, leave your bags in the car then unload the shopping into the bags in your boot. Genius. Why the hell have I not though of that instead of breaking my back trying to hoik huge blue bags full of brioche and other shite out of the trolley into my boot?!

banivani · 10/08/2017 20:36

When Lidl came to Sweden they had to give up and buy bigger end bits because us Swedes could. not. be. taught. We stand and wait until we've payed and then go to load our bags. Just can't adapt to different system. Was the woman Swedish I wonder? 🤔😉

Foxley11 · 10/08/2017 20:41

There were signs up in our local Aldi when it first opened, explaining that packing was to be done at the packing shelf after paying. I was terrified of Aldi/Lidl, then I got trolley bags and now the quality of my Aldi/Lidl experience has shot up Grin
Especially as Lidl are selling churros this week...

BronwenFrideswide · 10/08/2017 20:45

theymade I think the Spanish must have had the same feelings as shopping in Aldi and Lidl in Spain is nothing like posters on here are describing, far more laid back and easy going but then good luck to anyone trying to hurry along Spanish shoppersGrin most of the posters on here would spontaneously combust!

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 10/08/2017 20:48

Aldi have gone soft. They never used to let people get away with anything.

Winterc00kie · 10/08/2017 21:00

I shopped at Tesco the other day for my weekly, I normally shop at Aldi, I couldn't handle how slow they seem to scan at Tesco! I'm not used to it! Xx

Nonibaloni · 10/08/2017 21:00

hippy

a) they are magic but long, my 5 foot mum didn't feel she can get them high enough, but she won't carry on her shoulder
b) you have to accept you look like a twat. I assume like cyclists embracing Lycra.

I can also talk about them at great length (like cyclists). I don't follow all the rules though.

DrDreReturns · 10/08/2017 21:01

I like Aldi. It's small so you can get around it quickly, and then there's very little waiting at the tills because they are so quick. I can do my weekly shop in under half an hour (I find supermarket shopping a chore)! The other supermarkets take much longer to go around, as well as costing more.

AlpacaLipsNow · 10/08/2017 21:01

I'm a seasoned Aldi and Lidl shopper. I went to Tesco when visiting my mum and it was so slow! Doreen on checkout chatted endlessly to the woman in front. So much so that she forgot to put through some milk and carrots and had to do a separate transaction. Then started chatting to me to the point that I'm waiting for her to scan stuff. I'm used to having to elbow multiple items into the trolley while trying to enter my pin. It's a different world.
