My husband and I have a double barreled surname, as does my eldest.

If we were to have another son I love the name Thomas, shortened to Tommy.

The only issue is that his dad's surname is a fruit and very similar sounding.

Could I get away with the name in theory Thomas 'Tommy' Evans-Berry (Not our surnames but similar).

Or am I asking for him to be made fun of?

I don't get what's wrong with it?

MrTrebus · 10/08/2017 11:57

Blush these type of posts make no sense at all unless you tell us the real names

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 10/08/2017 11:57

Tommy Berry... I mentioned it to my sister and she said that it sounded like something from Enid Blyton

He'll be Tom to his friends and the rest of the world! Does that work with your names?

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 10/08/2017 11:58

It's hard to say without knowing the surname.
I'm wondering which fruit it might be! Wink
Regardless, if you are thinking it might be an issue, then it probably will be.
If there's any chance your son could be ridiculed I'd say don't do it.
But hard to say for sure without knowing the name.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 10/08/2017 11:58

Is your surname Cherry
If so, I wouldn't

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 10/08/2017 11:58

Oh sod it.

Tommy Cherry would be his real name.

I don't like the sound of the double m then y with the double r then y. It sounds clumsy. Does it have to be Tommy rather than Tom?

Sallygoroundthemoon · 10/08/2017 12:01

Nothing wrong with Tom Cherry at all. YABU to shorten Thomas to Tommy, which is very twee. Why not just call him Tom? Tom or Thomas is a lovely name and goes really well with Cherry.

beedybeedybumbum · 10/08/2017 12:02

I don't like it OP I'm sorry.

viques · 10/08/2017 12:02

Tommy Cherry does sound a bit sing song, but Thomas Cherry and Tom Cherry both sound fine to me. Are you actually pregnant or is this a mythical child?

Lostbeyondwords · 10/08/2017 12:03

I thought you were going to say Tomato. That would have been worse.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 10/08/2017 12:04

I know a Thomas Berry and have never thought there is anything odd or inappropriate about it!

19lottie82 · 10/08/2017 12:04

I like Tommy Cherry - it's awesome Grin

HumpHumpWhale · 10/08/2017 12:05

I think it's grand. He's only going to go by Tommy for a few years, he'll want to be Tom by the time he's 10, and Tommy Cherry sounds really cute, which is fine for a little kid. I'd go ahead.

PandorasXbox · 10/08/2017 12:05

Thomas and Tom Cherry are so much nicer than Tommy Cherry.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/08/2017 12:06

Tommy Tomato Grin

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 10/08/2017 12:07

No this is a mythical child. We're going to try for our second in the new year and I was reading existing DS a story and I really had a soft spot for it but you're all right.

Either Tom or rethink, it's to rhymy rhymy. Thank you all

Cherry Tomato.

Don't do it to him.

OneMillionScovilles · 10/08/2017 12:11

Wouldn't take the most ingenious playground to get to Cherry Tomato - sorry OP

OneMillionScovilles · 10/08/2017 12:11

X-post donttouch

DrablittleCrab · 10/08/2017 12:11

To me Tommy Cherry sounds too much like Tom and Jerry so that would put me off that nickname, but Thomas or Tom Cherry are lovely.

TwoDrifters · 10/08/2017 12:14

Mary Berry doesn't seem to have suffered from her name…

madja · 10/08/2017 12:15

Thing is, you might want your son to be Tommy, rather than Thomas, but what if he hates it?
My son has a name that can be shortened like that, and lots of family tried ie Daniel to Danny. Not a chance. As soon as he was old enough to talk he told us all quite clearly that his name is Daniel, and that was the end of that. He still won't let us do it now (only best grandad is allowed to call him Dan)
Be aware if you are going to give a full name that you want to shorten, that he may well not be up for that at all.
Thomas Cherry sounds lovely by the way.

SoupDragon · 10/08/2017 12:15

Having grown up with a daft name, no I wouldn't call my child Tommy Cherry.
