Am I allowed to bring a handbag as well as carry-on suitcase?

What about a backpack?

Thank you.

Depends on the airline and where you are flying from!

Callaird · 10/08/2017 11:05

Depends on who you are flying with. Some are very strict, some don't seem to notice. I take a smallish hand bag that will fit in my case for check in and boarding so I can remove it in departures and on the plane.

SnickersWasAHorse · 10/08/2017 11:06

Depends on the airline.
I last flew hand luggage only with BA. I took and hand bag and a cabin bag.

IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 11:08

Flying from Heathrow to Shannon (Ireland) with Aer Lingus.
Have a good few bits to bring with me, so a backpack would be handy, plus I tend to need inhalers/tissues etc. ad nauseum, so would like to have a handbag handy although I suppose I could use pockets or something. It's only just over an hour of a flight and you'd swear I was heading to Timbuctoo for all the fretting I'm doing!

Also, is it 100ml max for fluids?

JennyBlueWren · 10/08/2017 11:08

back-pack counts as carry on. Remember you get a "carry on" allowance for each seat so when I travelled with my 2 year old I had carry on suitcase and rucksack -I take a small bag withing the rucksack for flight stuff.

Check what your airline says but I think they normally allow a change bag in addition to the carry on -not sure how big a change bag can be...

JennyBlueWren · 10/08/2017 11:10

I have a cloth bag which I put in the very top of the suitcase/rucksack which has all the entertainments/tissues etc for the journey. I pull this out once on the plane so it doesn't count as a separate bag.

specialsubject · 10/08/2017 11:11

liquids, gels and pastes restrictions are on the Heathrow website. each container 100ml max, limit on total.

get it wrong, get it chucked.

IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 11:12

Ok, must see if I can find aer lingus guidelines.

Pigface1 · 10/08/2017 11:12

Off the top of my head I think AL allow a standard cabin sized bag plus a small handbag. Yes, 100ml max. Is it your first time flying?

puddingpen · 10/08/2017 11:13

www.aerlingus.com/travel-information/baggage-information/cabin-baggage/

So you are allowed a 'small hand bag/laptop/duty free/changing bag' in addition to your case.

Pigface1 · 10/08/2017 11:14

Oh yes and it's 100ml per container of liquid, and all the container have to fit in a clear plastic bag roughly the size of a large sandwich bag.

IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 11:16

No, I used to fly a good bit years ago, but before 9/11. Last time I flew was two years ago but I was stone drunk and my brother and sister were basically ... ahem.... minding me. I vaguely remember a brand new foundation being taken off me so I don't want to bring stuff and have it seized.
It might as well be my first time flying for all I know about navigating airports and shit.

Back in MY day............. Grin

Ok, I must get some of those little bottles in the poundshop then. Thank you for posting link to AL guidelines.

Thanks guys. If anyone is travelling from Heathrow this day week, you'll spot me no bother. I'll be the one standing out like a sore thumb. Grin

It's holidays season so lots of people will be in the same situation, you might be able to sneak through unnoticed. ;-)

IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 11:38

Vivienne, you'll spot me no bother, I'll be the gormless gobshite standing in everyone's way trying to figure what to do when I've checked in online. Because the nice lady would tell me where to go if I had checked in in person.

Gah! I'll get there about 5 hours before flight and should have figured it out by then.

BEWARE if you're travelling next week from terminal 2, there is an idiot at large!

coconutwater1 · 10/08/2017 11:50

You know the size of the items allowed and your allowed a max weight of 10kgs which is quite generous. One bag + a personal item, handbag/laptop case

Assume you have checked the size of your carryon suitcase? Airlines are getting (and rightly so) strict with the carry on sizes.

As far as liquids go the max size of a seethrough bag is 20cmx20cm which must seal at the top and all your liquids must be in 100mls or less, this will also include lipstick, and gels or contact lens solutions, and toothpaste. Max 10 bottles

IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 11:59

Christ coconutwater. Is it a freezer bag I need to get? Do I put everything resembling fluid in that?

I haven't checked size of my suitcase but the brand name is cabinesize lol. Actually, now that I think of it, I vaguely remember 45cm?

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 10/08/2017 12:02

I usually have a small rolling carry on and pop a handbag inside
Either they offer to check my bag in for free and so I can just use the handbag or once I have checked in ( or bag dropped as it is these days) I get my handbag out of the carry on and then that can go in The overhead locker and I keep my valuables and kindle with me

IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 12:05

Hoppingreen, you have just confused me. Do I still need to go to a check-in desk?

OP posts:
IdoHaveAName · 10/08/2017 12:07

Do you not bring your little suitcase with you and put it in overhead locker?
God-damned whiskey! I can't remember a thing from last time.

Brittbugs80 · 10/08/2017 12:10

I take a carry on bag that fits in the cage measure thingy at the airport that I put stuff in I wouldn't want to lose of my case went missing (favourite sandals, toothbrush, toothpaste, skincare, clean pants, 3 books etc) then my handbag which has book, camera, sweets and my medication in)

DH takes a bag, DS takes his back pack. We all carry clean pants and toiletries and books plus DS has his nitendo with games that he carries in its own bag.

brightlightceiling · 10/08/2017 12:13

I need to bring a lot of medicin and stuff on board and I always use one of these plastic big shoppers, I put the health stuff in and my handbag. Once onthe plane I take my handbag out and fold the top of the shopper into itself and put it in the overhead locker.

brightlightceiling · 10/08/2017 12:16

If your liquid is necessary medicin you are allowed to take more with you with a doctors note. You do need to bring it in their original packaging and put it through customs seperately.
