We took our blind DD (6) to the theatre yesterday with some other families with blind children for an audio described performance.

When we took our seats we were sat in front of a couple in their 50's.

My DD carries a large white cane which the couple clearly saw as we took our seats and then watched as we sorted out the headphones for the audio description.

The woman then proceeded to very loudly say to her husband;

"I've always wondered what I would choose if I had to choose between losing my sight or my hearing... I honestly didn't know but I think I would definitely choose my hearing, I couldn't imagine living without my sight, how would anything be enjoyable!?"

All of this in total earshot of my DD who lost her sight only a few years ago. She looked up at me with the most heartbreaking look on her face.

I was absolutely gobsmacked and desperately wanted to turn and say something scathing to her but my mind was blank and only full of swear words. I squeezed my DD's hand and had to stop myself from bursting into tears.

AIBU to think that she was just fucking rude or perhaps just didn't consider what an inappropriate comment that was?

Also, help me here so I am armed for the future... what would you have said to her in that moment?

Thank you ladies x

Well if my daughter had lost her hearing she would have the benefit of not having heard your comments. Please consider what you say in future.

MaitlandGirl · 10/08/2017 10:49

What I'd have said to her really isn't suitable to say in front of young children. What a stupid woman.

Your poor daughter, I hope she managed to enjoy the performance.

winewolfhowls · 10/08/2017 10:50

I would probably have done as you did except actually cry. Then think of a million things to say on the way home.
Hope your daughter is OK and managed to enjoy the performance. Some people are bellends, with no manners whatsoever. I bet or at least her companion was mortified. Perhaps complain to the staff and have rude people removed next time

AngelaTwerkel · 10/08/2017 10:50

What an idiot. I'm so sorry your DD had to hear that. I hope she managed to enjoy the performance.

Unfortunately it's not going to be the last time she has to hear shit like that. A hard lesson to learn so young though.

I think I'd say something like "Actually the hardest thing she's going to have to deal with is people who don't have the empathy or tact to know when to keep their mouths shut."

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 10/08/2017 10:53

Shame she hasnt lost the use of her tongue

araiwa · 10/08/2017 10:54

Id have accidentally dropped a drink on her

SisterMoonshine · 10/08/2017 10:54

My MIL has early dementia and I dread going out with her as she would say something like that.

Beerwench · 10/08/2017 10:57

I'd have probably done the same as you because I'd have been shocked! I think a good response though would be -
"My DD didn't get the choice, she lost her sight, but her hearing is good, unfortunately for her in this instance because she heard every word you said! You can't choose to lose hearing or sight but you can choose to put your Brain in gear before opening your mouth!"
I hope your Dd managed to enjoy the performance regardless of this silly woman's comments!

SleepFreeZone · 10/08/2017 10:57

God some people are just hideous aren't they.

PandorasXbox · 10/08/2017 10:58

Shock poor you and DD. Vicious woman. You probably did the right thing in not saying anything tbh as she sounds like the sort of person who'd just argue with you and this would have upset you both further.

Hope you all managed to enjoy the show. Flowers

Mrscropley · 10/08/2017 10:59

When did you lose your manners madam or have you never had any?

Nonibaloni · 10/08/2017 11:01

People are horrid.

I can't always manage it (probably not I that circumstance) but when ds is in earshot I try and say something along the lines of "oh for goodness sake there's 6 billion people on the planet and there all made different, thank goodness there's a whole world out there. At least you (ds) have a perfect soul [hard stare at offender].

whinetime89 · 10/08/2017 11:01

what a horrible experience for you and your daughter. I probably would have accidently on purpose thrown my drink in her face

Rainatnight · 10/08/2017 11:01

I'd be inclined to say 'you may have your sight and your hearing, but your manners leave a lot to be desired'.

Your poor DD. You sound like a lovely mum.

viques · 10/08/2017 11:03

Some people really are as thick as pig shit, unfortunately they are allowed out without wearing flashing neon traffic cones on their heads to warn the rest of us. I am so sorry your daughter had to meet one yesterday, I hope despite those awful comments she enjoyed the theatre.

Mummymoo2 · 10/08/2017 11:06

Ill be perfectly honest with you and i know its not the right way to handle it but i would not have been able to stop myself from knocking the cruel insensitive C* out. And would happily do it now on your behalf. What a nasty woman. You are a better woman than me for not reacting in that way

hingedspeculum · 10/08/2017 11:08

She didn't consider what a completely hurtful and ableist comment that is because she is likely to be the type of person that has no experience or understanding outside of her own existence. That makes her fucking rude. People can be beyond shit.

Tulips2lips · 10/08/2017 11:08

It was beyond horrid.

swingofthings · 10/08/2017 11:09

I think I would have turned around, stare at the woman in the eye, and very calmly say 'you realise me and my blind daughter heard everything you've just said' and let her squirm with embarrassment.

kingfishergreen · 10/08/2017 11:10

That woman was a shitbag.

Creampastry · 10/08/2017 11:11

What a f&£);;: bitch

SecretLifeOfSam · 10/08/2017 11:12

Oh this is just heartbreaking! I'm sorry OP, I have nothing useful to say but would have reacted the same way as you!

I really hope your DD enjoyed the show.

Hissy · 10/08/2017 11:12

Oh that would have broken me. I'm welling up NOW!

Your poor DD, poor you, huge hugs and squeezes for you both. I only hope that the woman's H thinks she's as big a c* as the rest of us do.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 10/08/2017 11:14

I'm afraid the red mist would have descended for me and I'd have had a choice word (or several) for her Angry

Saying that though, she probably was just totally insensitive and unaware of how inappropriate her comment was. I'd still have let rip with her though BlushGrin

DilbyGlipob · 10/08/2017 11:19

"Plenty of things would be enjoyable if we didn't have to do then surrounded by cunts".

Some people are such arseholes, I hope your DD had a lovely day apart from that. Flowers
