Choosing which item you want - is it rude?

Today I was in a well known bakery (think steak bake - don't judge) treating myself to an apple danish.

I asked for it, then asked if I could have the second one along as the one nearest her looked a bit manky. She did it but exchanged a 'look' with her colleague next to her (rolled eyes etc...) I know I should have said something but chickened out.

I can only assume it was because I asked for a specific one - was that rude? As a customer, paying for an item, shouldn't I be able to choose which item I want?!

I used to work for greggs.. people asking was perfectly normal

HotelEuphoria · 09/08/2017 20:05

Of course it's normal, I do it on the deli counter. 200g of marmalade ham please but from the smaller pieces in that pile please.

DM is worse, has the butcher turning all the pieces over before she makes her choice.

SheSaidHeSaid · 09/08/2017 20:07

What does it even matter to the person serving you?. How rude of them.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 09/08/2017 20:13

Their boss might have a problem with it.

Sushi123 · 09/08/2017 20:14

Totally acceptable, it happens all the time, don't know what she was rolling her eyes for! Of course you choose what you buy

CoughLaughFart · 10/08/2017 01:55

The customer IS their boss.

YANBU. I once bought a box of chocolates from a display behind the counter in a corner shop and realised just after I left that they were months out of date. I went in and asked for an in date box and the woman acted like I'd shat on her face or something. She was about to pick up a box with 20% extra free but then picked up the normal sized box beside it. I wasn't bloody having it and I got my 20% extra. dickhead

No, the store manager is their boss. I think the customer should be allowed to specify the item they want but that doesn't mean staff can't be frustrated if they know their supervisor/manager is going to "have a quiet word" about items getting left because they don't look the best.

Personally, unless it's burnt black or clearly been left out far too long or squashed or manhandled or something, I don't care what it looks like as long as it tastes good.

Wubsally · 10/08/2017 03:01

Ive worked in customer service for nearly 20 years and it has never been an issue to me to give a customer exactly what they ask for.(id expect the same) Doesnt matter if its a wee danish or a fancy car , as you say you're paying for it so definitely get the 1 you want.

CaretakerToNuns · 10/08/2017 03:10

YANBU.

The customer is always right.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 03:14

The customer is most certainly not always right!

But no, it is not rude to choose which you want, and I doubt the staff actually care. They will just give the bandy one to the next person.

MrsTrentReznor · 10/08/2017 06:45

Not rude in the slightest.
I'm getting less and less tolerant of bad service. Must be an age thing.
There's an awful lot of places I won't shop any more.
I'll happily fire off a complaint to H/O these days, BUT I'm also just as quick to write to bosses of people that have been superb.
My background is in retail (Not any more thank fuck!) And I know when I'm being unreasonable.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 10/08/2017 11:06

The customer IS their boss.

Ha ha 😂😂😄 Nope.

FluffyWhiteSlippers · 10/08/2017 11:44

MrsTrent Have you seen Alan Bennett's Lady of Letters? Wink

MrsTrentReznor · 10/08/2017 11:52

FluffyWhiteSlippers
No, but I just looked it up and I MUST now!!! It's available as a download! Plus I quite like Alan Bennett.
I may have found a new hero! Grin

FluffyWhiteSlippers · 10/08/2017 11:53
