Strange phone call

I'm a little freaked out by this so please tell me if I'm being silly. Last night at 10:45pm my house phone rang. It rarely rings - only really mum mum uses that number or annoying PPI calls. Anyway it rang and I immediately thought something bad must have happened to my grandparent. When I said hello there was a pause - like you get with automated messages - then a woman's voice said 'I'm sorry' then the line went dead. No number available when DH dialled 1471. It is possible the voice was automated but it was too short to be certain. Has anyone else had this?

Wrong number and she was apologising. Nothing to worry about.

JennyOnAPlate · 09/08/2017 08:16

I would assume whoever it was realised they had dialled the wrong number when you answered. I really don't think you need to be freaked out by it.

Phosphorus · 09/08/2017 08:17

Justva wrong number, she apologised when she didn't recognise your voice, and hung up.

What's odd about it?

flumpybear · 09/08/2017 08:18

I'd say wrong number too - may have been obvious e.g. Was phoning a business like a pub or restaurant so just said sorry and hung up - paused to think before saying it hence the pausey bit

C0untDucku1a · 09/08/2017 08:19

I see im the only one who is so suspicious my mind went straight to the ow telling you about your husband's affair then getting cold feet!

insancerre · 09/08/2017 08:20

Wrong number
No need to be freaked out

babynugget · 09/08/2017 08:28

Ok my brain must be wired differently as I never even thought of a wrong number - that's such an obvious, logical explanation. I never thought about the affair either but my brain will probably be mulling that over all day too now Hmm

babynugget · 09/08/2017 08:36

Actually though the wrong number thing - most people would either just hang up or say 'oh sorry wrong number' wouldn't they? It was also said really purposefully rather than in a 'oh sorry' kind of way if that makes sense? So purposefully that it made me question if it was automated. So that leaves me with affair?!? Bugger - haven't got the time or energy to deal with that right now! Any other possible explanations - since my brain doesn't want to accept the obvious and logical.

If it was an automated voice, it was a power dialers, they call a load of numbers and once all the operators are connected those numbers that answer after that get that message. Though 10.45 is a bit late ?

PoppyPopcorn · 09/08/2017 08:41

We get wrong numbers all the time as our number is close to the local doctors surgery. Our number ends something like 3454 and their's is 5434.

Sometimes people will pause, sound confused and say "Is that the doctor?" Others will say nothing and hang up. Sometimes they will say sorry, just as the OP's caller did. There is nothing sinister or suspicious about this at all.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 09/08/2017 08:49

OP, you're getting a bit carried away now with the OW stuff. It was a wrong number.

Loyly · 09/08/2017 08:49

There's an automated cold call with a female-sounding voice that does this. It has a pause of a few seconds and the automated voice says 'I'm sorry'. We've had it quite a few times. There's also a number that comes up as from Italy and it's a male-sounding automated voice saying 'Sorry'. They often happen at night too.

Or it could be a wrong number.

PollyPelargonium52 · 09/08/2017 08:50

One night I had an unknown caller ring at 3.15 a.m. it was a bit scary!

Put me off keeping the 'phone plugged in after that for a few weeks at night time.

babynugget · 09/08/2017 08:53

Thanks Loyly that's what I wanted to hear and I did think it sounded kind of automated. Not really getting carried away with the OW stuff - I just text DH to tell him that mumsnet were on the verge of telling me to LTB, so I'm not taking it seriously and have no concerns there.

wordy17 · 09/08/2017 08:53

I once had exactly the same on my landline with the voice just saying 'i'm sorry' and I thought nothing of it, mind you it was during the day.
I don't think you should let it worry you, OP.

babynugget · 09/08/2017 08:55

Polly if I had been here on my own I would have been quite scared - but I think I have a very over active imagination. Our phone never rings at that time of night so I was already anxious before I even answered it.

Iris65 · 09/08/2017 08:57

You've watched that horror film haven't you? The one where if you answer the phone then you're for the chop.

TenForward82 · 09/08/2017 08:57
Hmm
user53592952153 · 09/08/2017 09:00

It's nothing other than a wrong number, if it was an OW she'd be phoning his mobile.

Aridane · 09/08/2017 09:01

I see im the only one who is so suspicious my mind went straight to the ow telling you about your husband's affair then getting cold feet!

Not sure how you get to that!

NicolasFlamel · 09/08/2017 09:02

We've had a couple like that too. It sounds automated and just hangs up. Don't worry about it.

PoppyPopcorn · 09/08/2017 09:05

I think I have a very over active imagination

Totally agree that you are overthinking this - simply a wrong number. Nothing sinister. No affair. No axe wielding maniac checking you're at home before they pop round to murder you (because axe wielding maniacs always check first).

Felyne · 09/08/2017 09:05

My Mum (not in UK) has had the same thing a few times. Always the same woman's voice, it's an automated thing that cuts off most of the message by the time she picks up the phone I guess. It's unnerving for her.

PandorasXbox · 09/08/2017 09:05

Maybe she knew it was a wrong number when she heard your voice, twigged then said " I'm sorry "?

Try not to overthink it.

Whitecurrants · 09/08/2017 09:06

Sounds like a “we autodialled you but now don’t have a call handler free to bother you” message to me too.
If you’re with BT sign up for Call Protect. It’s free and works brilliantly - since signing up 3-4 months back we haven’t had a single cold call www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/phone/call-protect/
