Strange phone call

I'm a little freaked out by this so please tell me if I'm being silly. Last night at 10:45pm my house phone rang. It rarely rings - only really mum mum uses that number or annoying PPI calls. Anyway it rang and I immediately thought something bad must have happened to my grandparent. When I said hello there was a pause - like you get with automated messages - then a woman's voice said 'I'm sorry' then the line went dead. No number available when DH dialled 1471. It is possible the voice was automated but it was too short to be certain. Has anyone else had this?

By 'same thing' I mean exactly what you describe - the voice says "I'm sorry" and then hangs up.

Ok so nothing to be scared about then and if it was an axe wielding murderer at least they were apologetic so that's all good.

I had one of those calls yesterday too!

Was explained to me by a lady who used to work in a call centre, thus, the "automatated", call goes out, the first person who picks up the phone, gets usually the "robot", the other calls are then cut off, so you get Mr nobody on the other end.

oh god, i knew there would be a there must be a OW!

I've had this happen before. Some call centres have auto diallers so sometimes they will dial a number when there is actually no member of staff ready to start the call, so if no member of staff speaks within a second or two you get a recorded "sorry" and it cuts off. Annoying, but absolutely nothing to worry about.
