Not hugely earth shattering, but I went to a presentation about two big cosmetic brands and the demonstrator was adamant that they didn't contain alcohol (to which I'm allergic). But they bloody did!Shock

Do alcohol free products actually exist? This lady was astonished her two brands were laden with the stuff!

YANBU to think that salespeople shouldn't lie. YABU to think that they don't lie.

Ginfiend · 09/08/2017 00:33

Do you know the exact chemical name of the thing you are allergic to?
There are lots of alcohols, and she may have assumed because it's ethanol (the most well known) free, it's alcohol free.

MVLipwig · 09/08/2017 00:46

Quite common for things to say they're alcohol free and with an asterisk specify ethyl alcohol or similar. For most people's purposes they still are.

Callamia · 09/08/2017 00:51

They do exist, but you have to look quite hard for them. My friend was on medication to stop him drinking, and all of his shower gels brought him out in hives as a result. I can't remember what he ended up using, but it took him ages to find something suitable.

Fireguardmaiden · 09/08/2017 01:07

Ginfiend all of themSad

But particularly cetyl and steryl alcohol.

MVLipwig I agree - I found some "haram" cosmetics but apparently they're allowed so long as the alcohol is a derivative and not ethanol. So back to the drawing board there.

Germall 115, chromate, ethylenediamine dihydrochloride, nickel, hydrogen peroxide And sodium chloride are all on my banned list.

Can anyone help?

JungleInTheRumble · 09/08/2017 01:30

How about mineral makeups?

Like www.barefacedbeauty.co.uk/product/mineral-foundation/

ForestDad · 09/08/2017 01:37

Are you sure that you're allergic to sodium chloride aka common salt?

Where have you got this list of allergic substances from?
Is there a religious connection here? - "haram" cosmetics?

Fireguardmaiden · 09/08/2017 01:46

Forest Dad well spotted! Blooming auto correct, it's sodium hypochlorite.

The results are from extensive patch testing I had done via an NHS dermatologist to attempt to sort out my urticaria. I've cut all of these things out as far as I can and my skin and scalp has improved immeasurably! But, I'm left with limited options for cosmetics. I'm washing my hair with a v dilute baby shampoo and not conditioning.

No religious issues, I googled alcohol free cosmetics and most link to haram brands.

Jungleintherumble id still need to know what the ingredients were and I can't find them on that site.

SprinklesandIcecream · 09/08/2017 01:50

What's with the haram brands?

I didn't realise you could actually get drunk by applying makeup that has a bit of alcohol in it. Hmm

JungleInTheRumble · 09/08/2017 02:16

You should look for halal brands. Haram means forbidden so would contain alcohol - halal would be alcohol free.

You couldn't get drunk from alcohol in skincare but some Muslims believe they mustn't touch any alcohol hence the call for alcohol free (halal) cosmetics.

The ingredients are on the website Fire at the bottom of the page I linked where there is info about the shades you can click another tab and see ingredients. For body wash could you try a goats milk soap? They're supposed to be very gently and contain literally just milk, essential oils, coconut or palm oil and lye. Even a traditionally made soap might do?

AGrinWithoutACat · 09/08/2017 05:44

I checked my shampoo out of interest - have no idea what some of the ingredients are but didn't spot anything on your list ... the conditioner does have Cetearyl Alcohol though but may be worth investigating the brand "Faith in Nature" further (I use the Jojoba ones but there are lots of other flavours)

Errrrr....principals/religious/ethical reasons?
I'm glad we have options for everyone!

I know i'm not a murderer if i choose to wear make-up tested on animals/fur coats etc....however, due to my own personal ethics and knowing that i would still be 'condoning' the abuse of animals - i refuse to buy that stuff.

WaxyBean · 09/08/2017 06:05

Problem is most people think of ethanol as alcohol, and would refer to absence of that as alcohol free.

Would something like this suit you? I've not tried it. www.feelunique.com/p/Aurelia-Botanical-Cream-Deodorant-50g?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_rqz76_J1QIVh6ntCh2PhAThEAAYASAAEgIxjPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 09/08/2017 06:12

Yanbu but think of ribena tooth kindly. Also our 24 hour Tesco and Asda close at 10pm every night and only open for 6 hours on a Sunday.

WombOfOnesOwn · 09/08/2017 07:02

LOL at sodium chloride on the banned list. You're putting us on. You literally have sodium chloride in your own sweat and body excretions.

MassDebate · 09/08/2017 07:18

Try Jane Iredale mineral makeup - from a quick scan the ingredients you mention don't seem to be in the list for the BB cream (which I find really good) at least.

Fireguardmaiden

If you are interested PM me, I have a friend who makes soap - he's just ordered a new mold.

He makes one that I use on my psoriasis that is made from, lard and drain cleaner but the process of becoming soap means it is, well soap at the end.

Alcohol is used in soap to produce that 'clear' effect some soaps have, lots of commercial soaps also have alcohol.

I know you are probably thinking it will itch / burn / bring you out in hives, I had not used soap for years until he made this one.

KikisDeliveryService · 09/08/2017 08:44

Lush shampoo bars? They list the ingredients on the website. At least one of them does have alcohol but it looks like others don't.

Fireguardmaiden · 09/08/2017 08:58

Agrinwithoutacat thankyou, but the shampoo has panthenol which is an alcohol analog isn't it?
