Would it be worth my while to purchase a tumble dryer

Sorry I'm posting for traffic so popped this in the AIBU board.
I'm wondering if it is worth getting a tumble dryer? Finding the amount of washing/ironing increasing more and more with two small children. Someone suggested they are great for getting wrinkles out of clothes so less to no ironing needed. Can I have your opinions and also what dryer you have as they vary in price and I've no experience of them. Thanks

I Love my tumble dryer! I hate air dried towels etc. If you have the space, I would definitely recommend it.

Moanyoldcow · 08/08/2017 17:03

I have one. I'd give up food before I gave up the dryer. I got it when pregnant and it was revolutionary.

TheSnowFairy · 08/08/2017 17:06

With small children it's a godsend as you are washing / drying so many tiny things.

Our youngest is now 9 and we don't feel we need it any more.

Love my dryer (but did live in the US for several years and they are standard there). Excellent for towels and bed linen, and when it's crap weather. Kids stuff like leggings, top, vests etc all dry beautifully (well, M&S, Next etc do).

I have a Zanussi 8kg one, reasonably priced from ao.com and it's great.

It's amazing, I love mine, generally don't have to iron anything (as long as you don't over fill it and take stuff out straight away)

dustarr73 · 08/08/2017 17:09

I wouldn't be without mine. That and my dishwasher.

Definitely worth getting especially with our winters.

Mouikey · 08/08/2017 17:10

My parents bought me one for a pressie when I was pregnant- I didn't understand why as I'd my used one in 40 years. Wouldn't be without it. Ow - it's my best appliance friend!!!

hoopdeloop · 08/08/2017 17:11

GET ONE!!! I love mine!

speak2me · 08/08/2017 17:12

We got our tumble drier in January. I have a 4yo and a 2yo and it just got too much, the never ending rotating and hanging and trying to dry stuff. It was always out and I felt like I was drowning in it, but to some extent I didn't realise how much until we got one. I thought we were doing ok without it but having one has just made so much difference. There's still stuff which I wouldn't put in it but I can now not worry about the weather and just get on with it!

pigsDOfly · 08/08/2017 17:15

I don't have one any more as there's only me and I'm happy to line dry everything, and although all the ironing is tedious, as I say it's only for me.

But with small children, a tumble dryer is essential in my opinion.

The person who told you they get rid of wrinkles is absolutely right. I never did any ironing when I had one. Now I have to iron everything unless I want to look as if I've just got out of bed.

Buy one, you won't regret it. One of the most important household items, every home should have one.

PoppyPopcorn · 08/08/2017 17:16

Going against the grain.... we don't have one. I have three kids and live in not so tropical Scotland. Washing outside whenver it's dry, doesn't take long to dry in the house when the weather is just too bad to put it out. And I don't iron anything apart from work or school shirts.

Alittlepotofrosie · 08/08/2017 17:19

Get one. Saves so much time with not having to hang stuff out. Godsend in winter.

silkpyjamasallday · 08/08/2017 17:24

I wouldn't go without one now that I have one, especially considering how many clothes dd gets through in a day. My parents didn't ever have one but they had the washing machine in a big cellar room with the boiler so clothes would line dry, but not quickly. It makes doing laundry so much less tedious, I hate hanging stuff and it getting creases/clip marks on them. Tumble drier means we don't need to iron, we don't even own one, and anything that has got creased in the wardrobe can be chucked in for 10 mins and come out crease free. If you can afford it get one!

5foot5 · 08/08/2017 17:27

Don't get a washer / dryer though.

We bought one less than 2 years ago and it kept breaking and we finally gave up when the repair man came out 3 times in a week and it is still not fixed. We have since been told that washer / dryers generally do a shit job.

We will be buying just a dryer soon and putting it in the garage

WhichJob · 08/08/2017 17:28

I don't have one and from a green perspective I'm pleased but it is hard works on weeks like this where there are showers constantly and it drags out the whole laundry process.

scaredofthecity · 08/08/2017 17:29

omg yes! and a heat pump one if you can stretch to it. They dont get so hot and are much cheaper to run, and much kinder to clothes. I'd never get a plain condenser one again now.

MyheartbelongstoG · 08/08/2017 17:31

I have one and its great for drying when clothes are almost dry otherwise it's a huge waste.

I don't put everything in at it curls stuff and clothes can shrink.

Bluntness100 · 08/08/2017 17:41

I don't have one, I used to, but got rid, I seldom used it. I do hang the clothes in the spare room to dry though and generally they dry overnight and we don't iron unless it is stuff you'd have to iron anyway, like shirts or the like.

goldensyrupisshit · 08/08/2017 17:46

I wouldn't be without mine but I do still end up ironing not sure how others manage not to iron at all Shock

CrazyHairSister · 08/08/2017 17:53

I don't have space to hang washing to dry in the house, other than over doors so when it is tipping it down like it is now then my dryer is my saviour.

I used to hear people saying that they were really expensive to run but I saw a Which report that costed mine at £70ish a year.

thecolonelbumminganugget · 08/08/2017 18:01

DH banged on and on about getting one for a long time, I was anti it, high bills, risk of fire, having nowhere to put it except the garage blah, blah...

That was back when he was just DP, he subsequently became DH for a number of reasons and the tumble dryer is one of them. Our house no longer has clothes hanging everywhere like a laundry, where once was pants hanging off the door frames there is now tidiness as far as the eye can see.

The tumble dryer is magnificent (so is DH, the man's a domestic god, I was feral before he moved in)

I digress, yes, get a tumble drier.

JeffJarrett · 08/08/2017 18:08

Condenser drier is the best appliance I own. Don't have to iron 80% of clothes now, shakes off all the dog hairs so I don't have to lint roll everything (before the ironing).

I don't have three loads of washing drying all over my house for days making it smell damp when it was forecast to be dry but inevitably rains, and my towels are mega fluffy and snuggly.

So yes. 10000% yes. It's worth the extra electricity cost for me, it's not even a factor compared to the benefits.

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 08/08/2017 18:20

Yes.We had one when dd was born and for about 6 years unrltil it died.Dh was going to fix it and took so long that we got our next electricity bill.I didnt let him fix it after that.I would not have been without it in the early years though.

HipsterHunter · 08/08/2017 18:22

Why would you not have one if you have the money to buy one and the space to put on?

Just think how easy towels and bedding will be to dry.
