Nothing happened but I did something stupid

SingaSong12 · 08/08/2017 16:16

Posting for traffic - please help me calm down.
I did something incredibly stupid. On holiday. came back to hotel for a few hours sleep. Did not put the extra security thing on whicj I did last night. and a man came in to fix something (change a poster, not something I requested or had been warned about.

I'm in bed just crying for leaving myself vulnerable to anything, don't feel able to tell DParemts room next door. Know I'm an idiot. Sad and angry at myself.
Need to pull myself together, learn the lesson, actually get out of bed and put security on now. Please help me by telling reassuring me I am ok.

What happened? A member of staff came into your room and did some maintenance whilst you were there?

Did he see you? Speak to you? Did he actually do anything untoward?

NancyDonahue · 08/08/2017 16:20

Did he knock on the door before letting himself in?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2017 16:20

I don't understand OP. You don't think you should have let him in?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 08/08/2017 16:20

OK, so you went to your hotel room and an employee used his key card to access the room to do some maintenance. Is that right?

Why are you so upset by this, is there a back story?

Birdsgottaf1y · 08/08/2017 16:21

How old are you?

You are really overreacting.

dontbesillyhenry · 08/08/2017 16:23

You are crying at nothing? Are you okay otherwise?

SingaSong12 · 08/08/2017 16:24

Nothing untoward at all. I just feel I left myself vulnerable. They were changing a safety poster, showed me what he was doing but didn't speak English as far as I could tell (Fair enough it isn't the local language).
It's more my imagination realising any hotel employee with a full pass could have let themselves in.
Sorry if I'm maybe coming across drama queen

I'm not sure why you are so upset?
Nothing happened and you learned a lesson.
Not everyone out there is a bad person

SingaSong12 · 08/08/2017 16:25

Thanks for the reality check. Smile

You are not being dramatic it would have been a fright. A gentle lesson learnt.

Penny4UrThoughts · 08/08/2017 16:26

Eh? I never chain the door in a hotel. It doesn't even occur to me.

This seems like an overreaction unless you've had a bad experience in the past.

sonjadog · 08/08/2017 16:26

Don't get upset. There's no reason to. Now you've learnt that hotel staff can access your room during the day, and that you should put on the Do Not Disturb sign and/or use the chain. That's all.

Bemusedandpuzzled · 08/08/2017 16:28

Seriously? Unless you're staying in one of the world's murder and crime hotspots where you need to take every security precaution at all times, you're overreacting massively. Basically your OP is "Nothing happened, but it might have". Well, if my grandmother had two wheels she'd be a bike.

HoosierDaddy · 08/08/2017 16:28

Were you asleep? I can understand that you might get a fright, it can take a second to wake up and realise that things are ok. Lock your door now, stick the "do not disturb" sign on the outside, and try not to let it upset the rest of your trip

purpleflower23 · 08/08/2017 16:29

Huh... what's the big deal here?

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 08/08/2017 16:29

Well, if my grandmother had two wheels she'd be a bike

Or a broken car Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2017 16:29

I have no idea.

horsefeathers · 08/08/2017 16:30

The chance of a predatory stranger letting themselves into your room is honestly very low. You didn't take a huge risk, it wasn't stupid. There are bad people in the world, of course, but not as many as all that - not so many that any given woman sleeping in an un-security-chained hotel room is in significant danger.

Deep breaths. You're fine.

VodkaRevelation · 08/08/2017 16:30

I understand why you might feel silly you hadn't put the security lock on and feel relieved nothing untoward happened but there's no need to feel upset. This is an OTT reaction. But it is your reaction so I'm not going to call you silly for having it. Do you suffer from anxiety? Is there someone you can speak to?

Maybe complain to the hotel staff if the maintenance guy didn't knock first. Unless he maybe did and you didn't hear in your sleep.

fluffiphlox · 08/08/2017 16:30

Your making yourself sound a bit bonkers. Too much sun?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 08/08/2017 16:31

OK, so you got a fright, lesson learned. FWIW I always use the extra lock, you just need to get into a habit of doing that.

VodkaRevelation · 08/08/2017 16:32

To the PPs questioning the OPs reaction to the situation, can you really not comprehend another person whose mind works differently to yours for whatever reason (anxiety, past experience for example). No need to be dicks about it.

CockacidalManiac · 08/08/2017 16:32

How old are you? You sound very young.

Gooseberrycrumble4 · 08/08/2017 16:33

How old are you OP?

Something like that happened when I was 15 and I felt very vulnerable. It helped me plan for next time though.

Ceto · 08/08/2017 16:34

But of course hotel staff have to be able to let themselves into the rooms. What if a guest is taken ill and can't get to the door to let them in? None of this makes you in any way stupid, OP.
