THERE IS NO SUCH FUCKING COUNTRY! And if you really were as clever as you pretend to be, you might just fucking know that. Arrrgghhh.

I feel a bit better for that. Please feel free to add your own Grin

X post Reborn!

LemonRedwood · 08/08/2017 11:52

I get that. But you did single out the English. So I am too

Yes, the English as a people, but their country is the UK.

Well, I think that's a whole different argument which should probably be saved for another thread Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/08/2017 11:53

Lemon Grin I'm Irish btw and I'm not personally offended if people get it wrong, I've made it policy to not raise my bp on very minor issues that have no malicious intent. With some of the comments on this thread it's clear that the history of these British Isles is complicated and confusing even for people who live here.

MeanAger · 08/08/2017 11:53

NI is not part of the UK

Shock fucking hell. And you husband is from NI!

ElspethFlashman · 08/08/2017 11:54

I think if any evidence was ever needed for GBs complete disinterest in anyone beyond their own island, just look at Brexit.

I've never been a big proponent of Leo, but I do support his very blunt "You sort it out Westminster, since you're so clever" approach.

nina2b · 08/08/2017 11:56

The real Ireland?

Boredwithmyname · 08/08/2017 11:58

The person who claims that the British partitioned Cyprus might want to read up on some history too

DamnSummerCold · 08/08/2017 11:58

Just an aside In The Name of the Father is good but Dear Sarah, the story of Gerry Conlon parents is brilliant, in a tragic way.

Like a pp when people ask if I'm from Northen or Southern Ireland I reply from the midlands (yes I'm a Mulchie). But it's fun to see the does not compute on their faces…

nina2b · 08/08/2017 11:59

Donegal has made it difficult to write "southern Ireland" as representative of the small part that believes it is on the UK mainland. God, it's confusing and and an absolute minefield when it comes to referencing.

BoysofMelody · 08/08/2017 12:01

do, however, blame people who don't at least acknowledge and accept the part their fathers played in what was a massacre of a small country who had the geographical misfortune to be in their path of destruction.

Okay, given that my great grandfathers were the last ones born before independence and partition, which ones would you like to blame? The one who had his legs crushed in a mining accident and didn't get a penny of compensation from the pit owners? Or perhaps the one who died slowly and painfully of Pneumoconiosis coughing up the linings of his lungs. Maybe the Communist one who was born in a workhouse and had nothing but contempt for the British state and it's ruling class?

I agree, that the actions of the British state and its agents have had a profoundly negative impact on Ireland, but once you start playing the 'what your forefathers did to my forefathers, it gets people's backs up and falsely makes largely powerless individuals responsible for their government's actions over which they had no part or control.

MistressDeeCee · 08/08/2017 12:01

Maud
"
I'd be astonished if Mistress's friend said he was from 'western Ireland' - he probably said 'the west of Ireland"

Yes I think thats what he said actually...he told me where exactly afterwards but Ive forgotten. On reading thread it came to mind as clearly then not everyone says North or South do they, its not compulsory

nina2b · 08/08/2017 12:01

Try again:

Donegal has made it difficult to write "southern Ireland" as representative of the larger part that feels it is not allied to Britain.
God, it's confusing and and an absolute minefield when it comes to referencing.

JustHereForThePooStories · 08/08/2017 12:01

Why is anyone shocked? Brits have never exactly been known for their objectivity, have they?

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 08/08/2017 12:02

Fine for you to think that abigcup, but that isn't what you said originally.

araiwa · 08/08/2017 12:02

Definite british involvement in cyprus Confused

You don't say what you are referring to so I have no idea, but I haven't changed anything I've said.

misskelly · 08/08/2017 12:03

*JUST English people, or Scottish and Welsh also?

I said English people, so you can tell by that I meant English people. If I had meant also Scottish and Welsh people I would have said British people.*

I think since the stuff with the DUP it has surprised me how little the English know about Irish history. Because if they knew anything they also know why it connects to the West of Scotland too. I am generalising but I am baffled that so many who claim to be British know nothing about British history and their involvement in Ireland as a whole or the problems of sectarianism across other parts of the UK.

haveacupoftea · 08/08/2017 12:04

I'm from Northern Ireland. I really don't care about any of this. Why can't we all just move on, instead of squabbling over flags and country names and being offended all the time. I'm weary to the bone of listening to it all.

MistressDeeCee · 08/08/2017 12:05

Same to RebornSlippy yes west of Ireland I think

I said ok and asked where from exactly same as I would if someone said "Im from up North" as in North of England

abigcupoffuckyou · 08/08/2017 12:05

Moist of us have moved on long ago, and we aren't offended all the time. We're simply asking that they bother to get the name of our country right and stop being such dicks about it.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 08/08/2017 12:06

abigcup, you said that the British avoid its ('the British Isles') use. They don't avoid it in general at all. And when they do avoid it, it is typically to avoid the sort of response that you are giving, rather than because they think of the term as outdated colonialism.

abigcupoffuckyou · 08/08/2017 12:08

I said the British (government and officials) avoid it as policy.

Whitecurrants · 08/08/2017 12:11

Involvement (Although not entirely English as you said) araiwa, but the history is a tad more complicated than that.

crashandburnt · 08/08/2017 12:12

My mum is Irish from one of the northern republic counties. She would say Southern Ireland. In her 80's. Lived in England for 60 years but definitely a supporter of a united ireland! . She would write Eire in a letter.
