About outspoken vegans?!!!

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with eating meat, nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, nothing wrong with being a vegan. As long as you are happy and healthy then fine.

But why oh why do some vegans take it upon themselves to be so rude & overly graphic about their choices, shoving it down everyone's throats.

I know this has been done to death but recently an old school mate has been posting this sort of vitriol on Facebook (have since unfriended!) but in the next photo his cat is eating meaty chunks..... erm?

tabulahrasa · 07/08/2017 16:04

What do you want him to feed his cat? They're obligate carnivores...

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 07/08/2017 16:04

Joke:
How do you know if someone is a vegan?

They'll fucking tell you!

I always hated Phoebe on Friends because being a vegetarian was basically her personality, nothing else going on up there.

I know a few vegans but they all mostly keep it to themselves. It's like politics or religion, no one wants it shoved down their throats.

FreakinDeacon · 07/08/2017 16:05

YANBU. I'm a vegan and hate it even coming up because people assume I will be all smug and militant about it.

I eat how I eat for my own reasons and am not particularly bothered how other people eat.

Equally though, people have been quite rude to me about how bad it is for me and all sorts of shit about how we're 'meant' to eat meat so there are outspoken carnivores too Smile

Sunshinegirls · 07/08/2017 16:08

I'm not a vegan but can completely understand why some get so passionate about it. The way humans treat animals is shocking, also the environmental impact that the meat industry has on the environment is very scary.

FatBottomedGal · 07/08/2017 16:09

YABU. Sorry, but I'm getting really fed up of people using the expression 'shoving their opinions down everyone's throats' when it comes to veggies/vegans.

There's a lot of misunderstanding and lack of education when it comes to where our food comes from, especially as people are increasingly eating meat with every meal of the day - it's just not sustainable - especially not if people are expecting animals to be treated humanely. I think people (regardless of their food preferences) should understand exactly what goes into providing their food and are right to share the facts with their friends if they choose to.

Cats are carnivores, they can only eat meat. Humans are omnivores (as are dogs, for example). I do understand your confusion over a vegan happily buying meat for their cat though.

loubar101 · 07/08/2017 16:11

Vegans can't win. Those that feed their cat vegan get shot down for being cruel & pushing their diet, & those that feed their car meat get called hypocrites 🤔

I've met plenty more outspoken & pushy omnivores than I have vegans.

Farmerswife4life1984 · 07/08/2017 16:12

I totally get what you mean . I'm sick of the posts they keep posting on fb about the daisy industry which is mainly American . They believe it happens in U.K. As a dairy farmers wife I find them hugely insulting as I know we look after our herd exceptionally well and the videos they upload are not true to this country and many of them factually in correct ! Many people who post such shite have no clue about what they are posting but believe because a video has been made it must be true . I always comment asking them specific questions about the videos and they squirm and squirm then the post vanishes ? Boils my piss . I dont care if someone is vegan vegetarian or a meat eater . Each to their own

Areyoufree · 07/08/2017 16:12

I've never experienced this. Actually had an argument with a friend about this the other day, as I have friend who are vegans who are constantly challenged about their beliefs by non-vegans. But then, other friends insist that this is a thing, and that they are constantly challenged by vegans. And according to the news today, so does Jamie Oliver. So, maybe these militant vegans do exist, and I just haven't met any yet!

RiverTam · 07/08/2017 16:12

I don't know any a vegan or veggie who shoves it down your throat, however I have no issue with graphic images being shared, if you don't like it, don't cause it to happen! Eating meat involves the death of an animal, and can often mean it lives its life in pretty unpleasant conditions. Burying your head in the sand isn't anyone else's problem.

People post police later stuff, or stuff that they're passionate about all the time. It sounds like you think you're being guilt-tripped, which in turn sounds like you have something to feel guilty about - are you a big consumer of cheap, unethically sourced meat?

RiverTam · 07/08/2017 16:13

Police later?? Political!

Aquamarine1029 · 07/08/2017 16:14

Get the hell off of Fakebook for one. Your life will be much happier.

CaoNiMartacus · 07/08/2017 16:15

I know. I hate it too, and I'm a bloody vegan myself.

I make a habit of never discussing it. Likewise yoga. Best just to keep schtum.

MissBax · 07/08/2017 16:15

Of course there's nothing wrong with being vegan - it doesn't cause the deaths of billions of animals per year. That's a weird thing to say.
Aside from that, I don't think people should shove it down anyone's throats BUT when I first went vegan I know I did this - have since chilled out about it. It's very hard when you learn how destructive eating meat is to your health, the planet, animals, to not try and make others "see the light" too. It's a shame it often has the opposite effect, although I 'turned' 8 people vegan in the first year I was by posting graphic videos on Facebook so for every person it annoys, it may actually help some people realise what they're contributing to.

maddening · 07/08/2017 16:21

More annoying are those that feel the need to justify their meat eating and quiz you at length about your being veggie when you have done nothing more than decline a ham sandwich as you are veggie. I never do what you have described and only in depth conversations are instigated by meat eaters as above.

loubar101 · 07/08/2017 16:23

I personally try not to mention I don't eat meat. Why? Because people push and push to get into a debate about it. A lot of meat eaters take it personally and feel like they have to defend their choices to eat it - when all I have said is no thankyou I don't eat meat! I find it exhausting having to explain myself, or having aggressive statements on why they think people should eat meat thrown in my face. Or people intentionally trying to wind me up by commenting on how cows taste so nice, or shoving a bit of bacon in my face. Disrespectful.

It works both ways.

Biber · 07/08/2017 16:24

Talking about how vegans shove their opinions in other's faces? Have a look around at the advertising and butchers and food shops, supermarkets and fast food places. You can't go down a high street without seeing pictures of corpses and the real thing. It's not noticed because it is the norm.

Having said that, I'm a vegan who used to post graphic material but stopped because my omni friends just scrolled past and the vegans knew already.

meatup · 07/08/2017 16:24

It's never veggies, always vegans. We have several veggies at work and we always have to discuss catering as I also have dietary requirements. We have one vegan too, he's great, it's not vegans as a group it's just some militant ones. Just like not everyone who drives a BMW is a twat, just all twats drive BMWs.... (this is a joke, we have several in the past!)

OP posts:
Havingahorridtime · 07/08/2017 16:25

Those that feed their cat vegan get shot down for being cruel & pushing their diet, & those that feed their car meat get called hypocrites 🤔

Surely the answer there is to not own a cat if you can't bear contributing to the cruelty of the meat industry.
I have a friend who posted loads of videos abou the cruelty of the dairy industry and now she is formula feeding her baby, not because she has any problems with her own milk production but because she got fed up of her partner not being able to share the feeding responsibility, fed up of the cluster feeding and too embarrassed to feed in public. So it seems the dairy industry is only too cruel to contemplate contributing to until she needed cows milk herself for her baby.

loubar101 · 07/08/2017 16:25

Oh and if you dare comment back you get accused of pushing your beliefs onto them Hmm

Kursk · 07/08/2017 16:27

I really don't know how to feed a cat vegan.
Our cat would look into its vegan bowl, the look at me As if to say "batcrap human has lost it" then go and catch a mouse.

TheFaerieQueene · 07/08/2017 16:31

I'm a vegan and it pisses me off when the vegan bores/radicals proselytise to anyone unlucky enough to be in their firing line, which tarnishes all vegans as unreasonable twats.

I cook meat regularly and am, if I say so my self, an accomplished cook. There are some things I don't like and won't cook - offal for example, but I'm sure that most meat eaters have one or two meat products they won't touch.

Halo
Perfectly1mperfect · 07/08/2017 16:32

As a vegetarian, I have experienced quite a few non vegetarian people being rude about my choice, being overly graphic and telling me we were made to eat meat etc.

So it's not just vegans, it's people who eat meat too. There are twats in every 'group'.

Farmerswife4life1984 · 07/08/2017 16:32

having that is truly laughable haha she feeds her baby formula milk yet has in the past criticised the dairy industry and avoided dairy herself haha 😂I just can't fathom that at all ? She could have used soy milk or expressed herself ??? Crazy

loubar101 · 07/08/2017 16:34

@Havingahorridtime yes I completely agree. But I don't know every single vegans circumstances. They might of had a cat for 5 years before turning vegan, they're then in the moral dilemma of either having to give away their cat, feed it meat and contribute to the industry, or feed it vegan which has often detrimental effects to their health. So I suppose they choose what they believe is the lesser of evils so to speak

It's impossible to live a life that causes no cruelty to animals whatsoever so I suppose people do what they see fit.

MsHarry · 07/08/2017 16:35

it's not vegans as a group it's just some militant ones.

There are militant types everywhere, it's their personality not because they are vegan.
