About outspoken vegans?!!!

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with eating meat, nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, nothing wrong with being a vegan. As long as you are happy and healthy then fine.

But why oh why do some vegans take it upon themselves to be so rude & overly graphic about their choices, shoving it down everyone's throats.

I know this has been done to death but recently an old school mate has been posting this sort of vitriol on Facebook (have since unfriended!) but in the next photo his cat is eating meaty chunks..... erm?

TBH I've come across many meat-eaters who are just as vociferous about the idea of not eating meat. Bitching about 'vegetarians' in a general way, criticising things I've offered them to eat that don't have meat in them (as if they'd die if they had to 'miss' meat for one meal), saying 'vegetarians/vegans are boring' (wtf does that even mean?!) etc etc.

Some people are just arseholes. They are arseholes about different things, that's all.

MsHarry · 07/08/2017 16:38

What I find worse is the ignorance towards vegetarians and vegans. We were recently invited to a wedding and my DD is vegetarian. The food is a hog roast so I just asked what else there would be for non meat eaters and there was a collective groan about veggies spoiling the pig party!

MsHarry · 07/08/2017 16:39

Chefs like James Martin don't help either.

Hillarious · 07/08/2017 16:39

I eat meat and also like any vegetarian food (apart from goat's cheese). I've never had any issues with vegans. If anything they're apologetic about being difficult to feed. What I can't understand is a meat eater's attitude that a meal just isn't a proper meal without meat.

MaisyPops · 07/08/2017 16:42

I know what you mean. Most vegetarians I know just say they're vegetarian and get on with it.Equally, many vegans I know just get on with it.

But, there's a sub group of vegans who like to act their their choices are better than anyone else's. One tried to argue that them being vegan was better for the environment than a meat eating friend who cycles to work and uses public transport and doesn't own a car. 😂

ButchyRestingFace · 07/08/2017 16:43

in the next photo his cat is eating meaty chunks..... erm?

Aren't cats carnivores? Confused

Presumably the fuckers little darlings can't feed exclusively on the mice and birds they torture and torment catch?

SayNoToCarrots · 07/08/2017 16:46

RiverTam totally agree. I love a big steak but I'm not deluding myself about where it came from. If the way it's made upsets you, perhaps you shouldn't eat it.

chocolatesa · 07/08/2017 16:46

I think it's cos they haven't had a decent meal in a while so they are all hangry and want everyone else to be sad too Grin

(obviously I'm joking, before anyone gets annoyed.)

Noregretsatall · 07/08/2017 16:47

YANBU. I have a vegan 'friend' like this, shoves it down my throat whenever we meet and has become a total bore. I have unfollowed her on fb for this reason (among others!).

SkintAsASkintThing · 07/08/2017 16:50

I had a friend who was a closet, knobby vegan. I wasnt aware she held strong views as if we met up id be happy going to a veggie / vegan cafe and eating vegan. It was just easier as it catered for us both and I will happily eat veggie food.

All good and well until she dropped round unexpectedly one night and gave me a lecture on the lamb industry ( I had a fat, lamb shank sat before me )) and started dramatically retching.......I doon wound things up, can't be doing with that drama.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 07/08/2017 16:55

I just wish they would (well everyone really not just the vegans and veggies) realise that if they are eating food containing palm oil and soya they are harming a different collection of animals to the ones they are not eating.

I don't eat meat, I sometimes eat soya but not often, and I avoid palm oil as much as possible, even the so-called sustainable type because there are questions over it.

Being a vegan is a trend these days, like being a hipster. They make an issue of it but many have not thought about the issues.

bringbackfonzi · 07/08/2017 17:01

But the thing is, when you say OP in your 'tolerant' post 'There's nothing wrong with eating meat, nothing wrong with being vegetarian' etc, in the eyes of most vegans there IS something wrong with eating meat. If you are vegan for ethical reasons, you believe that animals suffer and are killed unnecessarily and that this is 'hushed up' socially - in the sense that we call dead bodies by different names (e.g. 'pork' not dead pig), we keep abattoirs away from city centres, we package meat to look detached from the live animal and we get repulsed/annoyed when people show us images of slaughter. So to be honest I'm more annoyed by ethical vegans who don't proselytize - if you care, stand up for the creatures you care about.

BasketOfDeplorables · 07/08/2017 17:03

I've been vegetarian all my life so had had enough of the militant meat eaters by the time I was about 8, it might be nice to meet a militant vegan just to be berated from the other side for a change.

I do know a couple of 'vegans', however, and they wind me up. The ones who pick and choose when they're actually vegan, and never when it would be considerate of anyone else.

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 07/08/2017 17:04

in the next photo his cat is eating meaty chunks At least he is feeding his cat properly, I know a woman who tried making her poor cat a vegan and then had a huge facebook rant when she found out the neighbours had been feeding it meat.

People can eat whatever they like but no one should be forcing their diet down anyone's throat, I have some diet obsessed friends that are just as bad lately and it really pisses me off. Fine discuss it if you are going over for dinner, if I like you enough to cook for you I like you enough to make sure it's food you can eat, share the odd good recipe if you like but don't tell me what I shouldn't be eating.

meatup · 07/08/2017 17:07

Of course they don't agree with it for ethical reasons but there are lots of things I disagree with too but I just do my bit, I don't try and force others to do the same.

'There's a lot of misunderstanding and lack of education when it comes to where our food comes from, especially as people are increasingly eating meat with every meal of the day - it's just not sustainable - especially not if people are expecting animals to be treated humanely. I think people (regardless of their food preferences) should understand exactly what goes into providing their food and are right to share the facts with their friends if they choose to.

Cats are carnivores, they can only eat meat. Humans are omnivores (as are dogs, for example). I do understand your confusion over a vegan happily buying meat for their cat though.'

were not herbivores either if we were we would have special digestive systems like cows and rabbits

WeirdAndPissedOff · 07/08/2017 17:15

Fonzi - but what good does preaching do? Do you know anyone who has ever made a decision that will impact their life based on someone shouting at them/showing them videos/being pushy? The same applies whether you're a meat-eater, vegan, religious, etc, etc.
If you're being pushy to convert people, at the end of the day all you've really done is piss people off so you can feel like you've done something.
You'd have far more luck just talking to people who are already interested.

Bluegreen - we may not be herbivores, but being omnivores means we are able to choose not to eat meat. Cats can't do the same - they need the meat.

bringbackfonzi · 07/08/2017 17:18

But meatup if you thought murder was being committed - and for many ethical vegans slaughtering animals IS a kind of murder - would you really just keep quiet about it? Why?

hiphopcat · 07/08/2017 17:24

I have to say, I know 6 different 'vegans,' (2 colleagues, 2 family members, and 2 friends,) and they are all quite annoying when it comes to their veganism, and judgy about what others eat. And hilariously, 4 of them aren't even VEGANS. Angry

They are constantly posting stuff on twitter; preachy shit about how meat is murder, and how it's 'cruel' to eat dairy, and posting (graphic) pics from PETA. Then on the sly, they eat a pizza with cheese on it, or drink a latte.

One young relative of mine gets really pissed off with people saying 'oooh, aren't you sooo healthy, eating fruit for lunch?!' and similar comments, as she feels patronised, but she doesn't help herself by putting shit on her twitter every fucking day about being a 'vegan!' (Which she isn't anyway, as not a week goes by, when she doesn't eat something made from dairy/eggs etc.)

And as has been said, some of them always harp on about it too, like they deserve a medal, and they act meat eaters are evil. I was pissed off when my colleague sent me a link to a documentary film on netflix, saying 'watch this, it's great, it's about healthy eating.' I watched it, and it was basically vegan propaganda .

One story on it made me laugh; an obese 55 year old woman who had suffered arthritis, diabetes, depression, asthma, and IBS for about 20 years, ate this super duper vegan diet for TWO WEEKS, and every single one of her ailments was miraculously cured. IN. TWO. WEEKS.

What a crop of horseshit. Having a much healthier diet would of course help all the ailments, but in 2 weeks? Don't make me laugh! This woman didn't ask me about it. Just as well, as I would have told her it was a load of shit.

Fucks me right off, it truly truly does. They are on a par with people who preach about religion. (Not bashing religion by the way, just people who call at my door and try to convert me!)

I know vegans get fed up of being questioned and moaned at and criticised (by some meat eaters,) but it's no wonder, because some of you don't half like to keep reminding people that you're a 'vegan!'

*disclaimer, not saying ALL vegans (and people who pretend to be vegans) are like this, just the ones I know!!!

bringbackfonzi · 07/08/2017 17:26

I guess some people are prepared to lose friends by standing up for their beliefs. I hope I would be.

MissBax · 07/08/2017 17:27

hiphop are you denying the links between meat/dairy and heart disease, cancers, diabetes, arthritis, ibs??

Fluffyears · 07/08/2017 17:29

I have one on my Facebook and for every 'fact' she posts I google the opposite to show her that you can find anything on google it doesn't make it true. She also gets on my nerves by saying you can't love animals or be against animal cruelty if you eat meat. Also you are a bad personal if you eat meat....whobthe fuck is she to decide how I feel about animals and if I am a good person or not. Her latest thing is how meat eaters will all die of heart disease, cancers etc. My whole family are meat eaters and not one has had any heart issues.

harshbuttrue1980 · 07/08/2017 17:30

A lot of vegans adopt rescue animals rather than buy them from a breeder. Cats eat meat, and a vegan who adopts one from a shelter isn't adding to the amount of meat being purchased. I get what some of you are saying if the vegan actually bought a cat from a breeder and thus added to the demand for cats and then for meat, but most vegans adopt animals rather than buy them.
I'm a vegan because the meat and dairy industries seem to inhumane and to cause so much suffering. I try not to go on about it, but I do feel strongly about animal suffering. I have to be honest though - I felt fine as a vegetarian, but do feel more tired and run down now that I'm a vegan, so I have never claimed to anyone that its the perfect diet.

Fluffyears · 07/08/2017 17:33

I also have a lovely vegetarian colleague who barely mentions it. Occasionally she will mention itnif we are discussing food in particular for example we were talking about bolognese and she said she uses quorn mince.

MissBax · 07/08/2017 17:36

My whole family are meat eaters and not one has had any heart issues. - give it time.
