Tesco and its Irish customers

AIBU to think that Tesco treat the customers in their Irish stores like sh*t.
They charge them 70 cent for a 'bag for life'
They are discontinuing plastic bags in their UK stores and will charge 10 pence for a 'bag for life' there. Sad

Exactly the same thing is happening in England and it's being put in place to try to help the environment.

The 5/10p bags in the UK not the bag for life ones are they?

I thought they were just increasing the charge for regular/disposable bags from 5p to 10p.

The fancy bags start at about £1.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 07/08/2017 22:18

The 'plastic bag' tax is ring fenced to go towards environmental issues and projects. Most Irish people bring their shopping bags (those bags for life) to the supermarkets now and they 70c has paid for itself several times over. You only need to pay for a bag if you forget your own and there are several types of bags available too - really cheap plastic (would only be usable a few times), heavy duty plastic (bag for life), and heavier quality bags (could cost anything from €1 up to €4 or so depending on where you buy it and what design is on it or if it is a fund raising bag).

This is policy in all supermarkets.

However, if you are buying clothes or anything else, you get a paper bag and they are give foc.

Not too shabby if you ask me.

skinnymalinkmalojin · 07/08/2017 22:25

I haven't shopped in Tesco for years, despite having one close by. I do most of my shopping in Lidl, local butchers which is beside Lidl and a few bits every now and again in Super Valu. I spend a lot less this way and I reckon that the quality of the food is a lot better. The fruit and vegetables are great as is the wine Wink

WhatchaMaCalllit · 08/08/2017 08:09

Skinny - where is the fruit & veg better - SV or Lidl?

dementedpixie · 08/08/2017 08:13

They are stopping the 5p thin bags so only bags for life (minimum 10p) will be available. Are you complaining that your bag charge will be more than 10p?

itsbetterthanabox · 08/08/2017 08:15

Ffs are they?
It's a joke. They shouldn't be charging in the first place and now they are charging even more.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 08/08/2017 08:16

demented - who are you directing that question to?

dementedpixie · 08/08/2017 08:16

It's to encourage them to be reused. I have loads in the house but they don't always make it back out to the car!

dementedpixie · 08/08/2017 08:17

It's to the OP as in Ireland they charge 70cent whereas the minimum charge will be 10p here. Quite a difference

Penny4UrThoughts · 08/08/2017 08:17

Wow, that's a big difference. Are they the same thick plastic bags for life for the 70 cents that we pay 10p for?

dementedpixie · 08/08/2017 08:19

Although there is a large range of reusable bags you can buy. Cheapest here will be 10p. Is 70 cents the cheapest bag there?

MyCalmX · 08/08/2017 08:21

Has anyone read the OP Hmm

Yes you are being charged more in Ireland for the same thing, but honestly every time we visit everything is much more expensive than here.

MissBax · 08/08/2017 08:24

It's a joke. They shouldn't be charging in the first place and now they are charging even more. - someone totally doesn't understand the concept of recycling.

Fruitcocktail6 · 08/08/2017 08:27

But it's a bag for life, the point is you buy it once and reuse it. It's 70 cents.

MaeveTheRave1 · 08/08/2017 08:28

Tesco (and other British stores) have a history of over charging Irish customers (compared to what they charge in UK) - I never shop there. With so many other supermarkets - supervalu, dunnes, lidl and aldi - there's no need to.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 08/08/2017 08:36

The levy on plastic bags here in Ireland is 22c, it's only 5p in the UK. However, in all other ways Tesco in Ireland is shite and should be avoided at all costs.

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 08/08/2017 08:38

Once Hard Brexit kicks in prices are going to skyrocket. 70c for a bag is going to be cheap.

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 08/08/2017 08:40

Last time I was over I got some nifty trolley bags. They are colour coded to me cause I'm a tad strange about food shopping for fridge, presses, toiletries etc.

ShatnersWig · 08/08/2017 08:43

Dunnes Stores. Quinnsworth. Happy days when I used to be in Ireland.

MaisieDotes · 08/08/2017 08:45

They have stopped providing the 22c (the basic light plastic bags), yes.

This happened ages ago, maybe a year or so, in my local Tesco. You can still buy the 70c ones, they are the larger hard plastic ones.

I don't care personally, as I always bring my bags.

We've been paying for our bags for many years now, so most people are organised and don't need to buy bags in the supermarket.

MaisieDotes · 08/08/2017 08:46

Agree Tesco is shite though. SuperValu all the way.

sashimiyummies · 08/08/2017 08:47

I don't like giving my money to Tesco. I prefer giving my money to Irish shops like supervalu

switswoo81 · 08/08/2017 08:51

Don't Tesco call us Treasure Ireland and refuse to disclose profits here.. think bags are the least of it.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 08/08/2017 08:52

How's that going to happen, CommonSense, we've only seen the British being hurt so far?
