Tesco and its Irish customers

AIBU to think that Tesco treat the customers in their Irish stores like sh*t.
They charge them 70 cent for a 'bag for life'
They are discontinuing plastic bags in their UK stores and will charge 10 pence for a 'bag for life' there. Sad

It's a joke. They shouldn't be charging in the first place and now they are charging even more.

They don't have a choice about charging.

If it's a bag for life, potentially it literally is that - you get to replace the bag every time the handles go or it gets worn out. I find it difficult to get worked up about spending 70c on that.

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 08/08/2017 08:54

You wouldn't send a rat into the local supervalu in my home place. The manager is a horrible man. Who funnily enough was complained about on the fb page.

Dunnes despite its outrageous notions when it comes to clothes is great value.

Airobnb · 08/08/2017 08:55

I stopped going to Tesco around the time of the striking last year. Some of the old Quinsworth staff are on superior contacts to more recent employees.
Don't miss it at all. The food prices were creeping up, the vegetables in particular
I'm a regular Lidl user and just discovered Aldi which I think is better these days.
Supervalu is too expensive for everyday shopping unless your brand loyal to the Kerrygold, Lyons/Barrys/etc.

If I really want something not for sale in Lidl/Aldi/Supervalu,that I would have previously needed to get in Tesco, I can think of lemon curd (proper curd) or scotch eggs, I go to M&S for those.

MaisieDotes · 08/08/2017 08:58

It must vary by area common The SuperValus near me are great. My local Dunnes is very expensive, they've remodelled it recently with a huge amount of "premium" stuff, loads of lovely butcher and deli counters etc. Lovely but €€€.

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 08/08/2017 08:59

Silently I live in England and just thinking comparatively. Although I am seriously thinking about moving back. Since Brexit we feel as welcome as a dose of the clap. Not that we ever felt really welcomed in this area. It's very UKIP.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 08/08/2017 08:59

The government levy here is four times higher than that in England though so it's bound to be somewhat higher, but that said we get fleeced here anyway versus England when it comes to most retailers.

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 08/08/2017 09:04

Fecking notions Maisie . Yes your local one probably has a different owner. I do like Pettits.

ExConstance · 08/08/2017 09:05

Shop at Sainsburys instead, their 5p bags are lovely and strong.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 08/08/2017 09:08

CommonSense I really don't think that we are going to suffer, if anything we're going to do well out of Brexit. Apparently British visitors are down by 27% this year but there still isn't an empty holiday cottage here in West Cork. We have some extra Germans but it's mainly Dubs down, throwing money around like it's going out of fashion.

We've the fastest growing economy in the Eurozone, house prices are rocketing and we are generally doing grand.

diddl · 08/08/2017 09:09

That does sound expensive.

Was recently at an Asda in the midlands & I think that their bags for life were 8p which I thought was "expensive" as I'm sure that they used to be 5p!

Still, I was exchanging one anyway so it didn't cost.

Also bought a big woven pvp(?) bag for 38p-bargain!!

heartstornastray · 08/08/2017 09:10

Tesco Ireland needs to review their prices, massively overpriced for practically everything. I'm amazed that anyone would pay what they charge at some of their stores. I see women just throwing everything in their trolleys regardless of the outrageous price.SuperValue has better bargains than Tesco.

NormaSmuff · 08/08/2017 09:13

i use my 5 p bags as bin bags, not wasting bags here Angry

hollyisalovelyname · 08/08/2017 09:13

The Times (London as opposed to the Irish Times) is leading with Tesco scrapping plastic bags and charging 10p for bags for life. My point as Dementedpixie pointed out, is that Tesco charge 70cent in Ireland for their bags for life, yet will only charge their UK customers 10 pence. Quite a discrepancy in price, don't you think?

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 08/08/2017 09:13

Personally, I really like how seriously the Irish take keeping the environment free of plastic bags. We have hardly any bins and still don't have the litter problem most of SE England has. I don't know anyone who'd dream of stepping out to the shop without a clutch of reusable bags and that's better for everyone.

NormaSmuff · 08/08/2017 09:13

i dont like sainsbury bags as they Cant be used as bin bags.

chips4teaplease · 08/08/2017 09:15

Are they still doing the black 'Tesco Ireland' hessian-look bags? I like those. I still have one from two years ago.
I'm missing Supervalu. Grin

Liiinoo · 08/08/2017 09:16

In Donegal our local Supervalu is rubbish. Dirty with tired sad old stock.i think they can only get veg delivered a couple of times a week. Luckily we now also have a Lidl and and Aldi across the road for good quality, fresh basics. For 'fancy' stuff occasionally we drive 40kiloms to the nearest Dunnes food hall. After the local stores It feels like walking into Harrods food hall.

Lucysky2017 · 08/08/2017 09:17

You can always knit your own shopping bag out of old jumpers... I think we are all getting used to taking a bag into shops now like we did many years ago. It's not that hard. I never ever take a plastic bag in a shop now as a matter of principle. I woudl support Tesco doing in England what it is doing in Ireland.

viques · 08/08/2017 09:19

Are Tesco forcing people at gunpoint to buy bags now? Do they not let you bring your own bags into the store anymore? Will they make me throw my lovely collection of reusable bags in a skip and then laugh as they set them on fire? Cowers in corner and whimpers.

LaurieMarlow · 08/08/2017 09:22

Plastic bags are the least of it. The quality of produce, service and value for money are abysmal in Ireland compared to UK. I advise boycott.

Not difficult as Lidl/Aldi/Supervalu are great and Dunnes has seriously upped its game.

LaurieMarlow · 08/08/2017 09:22

No Sainsbury's in ROI. Though you could always drive to Newry.

I am eyeing up a granny trolley. My DM always brings hers over on visits. A suitcase full of Irishness and that fecking gingham trolley. And those big old red blue and white bags the culchies used to have for the December 8th invasion of Moore St.

Plastic bags should be expensive everywhere. Make them something ridiculous like £1 each and people soon would stop forgetting to bring their own
