To have called in sick from work?

SickFromWork · 07/08/2017 08:15

I'm in my probation period, so I never usually would. But I'm in a&e with possible sepsis from an insect bite. I just rang my work to let them know and they sound really angry Sad it's not like I'm tucked up in bed with a cold!

I know I should be worrying about the sepsis, and I am. But I have anxiety and am now terrified I'm going to get the sack.

They can't get mad at you for being in a&e. Bring proof if you can to your next work day.

PurpleDaisies · 07/08/2017 08:17

Of course not! You're in A and E... no reasonable manager would consider that anything other than an exceptional emergency.

Get well soon Flowers

SaltySeaBird · 07/08/2017 08:18

No I can't imagine anyone being annoyed by that.

Bingeslayer · 07/08/2017 08:18

You're in hospital not taking the piss, don't give it another thought.Hope you feel better soon Flowers

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 07/08/2017 08:18

You don't mess around with possible sepsis! YANBU at all. If they're the sort of company that would be pissed off at an employee for being in hospital, they sound like dickheads to work for.

That said, it can be hard to gauge tone and maybe you've just caught someone having a bad morning or just one particular dickhead and the others may be lovely, so try not to fret and focus on being seen and getting better. Flowers

I think this is probably true. Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Been sitting here for 90 mins so I doubt they think it's sepsis. Which is good. But wish I stayed in bed after being up all night itching and scratching 😩

So you've not been seen yet? In which case you are in A&E with an insect bite?

I would have gone to an emergency GP appt to be honest.

Take a photo of you there.

PurpleDaisies · 07/08/2017 08:50

She's in a and e with symptoms of sepsis following an insect bite. That's totally different.

HelpPlease1990 · 07/08/2017 08:56

I rang 111 and they sent me here. I asked if I could just be seen at a GP which I'd much prefer, and they categorically refused. I've never been to a&e in my life. But thanks for that.

NormaSmuff · 07/08/2017 08:58

name change?

LoudestRoar · 07/08/2017 08:59

What a helpful comment NikiBabe I'm sure OP hasn't come to a possible diagnosis of sepsis by themselves....

StealthPolarBear · 07/08/2017 09:02

I agree yanbu but your work can penalise you if they choose to. Comments implying you are bulletproof are not helpful imo

HelpPlease1990 · 07/08/2017 09:03

Sorry, yes

Fluffymonkey · 07/08/2017 09:03

There is a difference between a local infection and total body involved sepsis. It sounds like the OP has the former

Scribblegirl · 07/08/2017 09:04

Oh OP you did the right thing. DP had a bad bite and I made him go to the walk in centre. He was worried about work too. As it was they sent him off to A&E as they weren't sure and it turned out he had a mild case of cellulitis. Left untreated it could have become sepsis. You don't muck around with this stuff. Don't feel guilty - if you start thinking like that they'll make you feel worse. It's unfortunate, but it's unavoidable, and they will cope Flowers

NormaSmuff · 07/08/2017 09:04

agree that you are not bullet proof, if you are sick too often

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 07/08/2017 09:04

I developed cellulitis after an insect bite. Antibiotics and antihistamines sorted me out, but they said it could have got really nasty without treatment. I had to go to A&E too. If your work get shirty, they are being unreasonable. You'd be off a lot longer with sepsis.

NormaSmuff · 07/08/2017 09:05

hopefully you will be seen soon and if appropriate and you are judged to be fit enough, you can go in to work

StealthPolarBear · 07/08/2017 09:06

Or sick at all. Especially if she does as a pp advises and says "but I was in A&E!" in response to any questioning.

CremeFresh · 07/08/2017 09:07

Perhaps the person you spoke to only heard the 'insect bite ' bit , in which case I can see why they were a bit off.
Hope you get seen soon and it's not sepsis. X

shouldnthavesaid · 07/08/2017 09:12

In my experience they treat it very differently if you're actually admitted - I've been admitted 7-8 times in last 12 months , my manager could not have been more supportive and a whole range of help offered to keep me in work.

If on the other hand its just days off here and there for minor illness (which this could still turn out to be) then they can go down disciplinary, conduct, capability processes.

Hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

StealthPolarBear · 07/08/2017 09:17

They don't need to o down the disciplinary route!
Sorry op, hoping it doesn't come to this and your place are sympathetic but the "they can't do anything if you're genuinely sick" myth can be falsely reassuring

HelpPlease1990 · 07/08/2017 09:22

Shouldn't have posted in AIBU. Feeling even more worried now 😩

Doc said she's slightly concerned, as it's spreading fast and she said I'm very chesty. Just waiting for bloods.
