To think my DB and SIL don't understand healthy eating

WyclefJohn · 06/08/2017 14:35

I was talking to my DB the other day, and he said on a day out, he took his 2 and 5 year olds out for the day, where they had Burger King for lunch, and hot dog and chips for tea from a pub. The next day for lunch, they had sausage rolls.

My DN is being seen at a clinic as she has severe constipation. I only see a snapshot, and the rest of the time, they might eat like a food blogger on instagram. I desperately do not want to say anything, but am I being unreasonable to think my DB and DSIL are having trouble with a healthy diet for their children?

Yes I think yabu. Unless they are all seriously overweight or have health problems then stay out of it. As you say, that was a snapshot of 2 days. We have done similar, been out for the day and had hotdog & chips for lunch then McDonald's for tea then the next day gone out for pizza or similar.

WyclefJohn · 06/08/2017 14:55

It's not completely isolated, and although the children aren't obese, my DB and SIL are. Still, I know I can't say anything

We have done similar if out and about for a couple of days. However we would also try and have a bit of fruit and veg in what we have, especially for our ds who used to have problems with constipation.
There is not much you can do about it anyway.

WorraLiberty · 06/08/2017 14:59

It's hard to say whether they do or not really.

But if your DN is being seen at a clinic due to severe constipation, then they certainly should do, otherwise what are the clinic really doing.

Alexandrite · 06/08/2017 15:01

Hopefully the clinic will be able to look at their diet and give them some pointers.

Sirzy · 06/08/2017 15:02

i only see a snapshot

That line alone says it all!

MrsOverTheRoad · 06/08/2017 15:20

YANBU to assume the constipation is linked.

Many people eat truly shocking diets...it's seen as "normal" to eat processed meat regularly.

It's really, really bad for people...I can't understand why people don't make more effort.

Crashbangwhatausername · 06/08/2017 15:22

My dd had severe constipation. There were probably times when we were out and about that it looked like we were feeding her like this, however, apart from anything if a child is severely constipated they probably aren't eating and they may well be feeding her fruits/veg as snacks inbetween, that's how I would feed dd while the rest of us went on as normal. Although dd2 also became a dried fruit and smoothie addict and isn't really interested in fast food

Aquamarine1029 · 06/08/2017 15:23

If your brother and SIL are obese, I think it's obvious that they have bad eating habits.

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2017 15:25

But do they think they are eating healthily? Understanding healthy eating is not the same as actually eating healthily.

Were those 2 days indicative of their overall diet do you think?

PinkHeart5911 · 06/08/2017 15:26

i only see snapshots Well keep your nose out then? As by your own words you only see snapshots

I don't think on a day out a child having two meals like that is outrageous tbh, we all do things when out with dc to make our lives easier. It's the diet overall that matters and as you only "see snapshots" you've got no idea what that is like

If your dn is under a clinic these people know how to do there job and are professionals so I'm sure if it's the diet the right people will take to your db and sil

You are probably right

But MN won't allow you to judge Wink

MyRedPepper · 06/08/2017 15:29

I can see totally where you are coming from. The first thing to do with a child with constipation is to increase the amount of fiber in their diet. And yes the snapshot you've had isn't great.

However

  • Ive had a child with chronic constipation DESPITE the fact he was eating plenty of vegs (it was about the only thing he was happy to eat then...)
  • I, myself, need to follow a diet that is strict (well compare to what most people eat) and when I'm out and about, I find it's very hard to actually follow said diet. Eating vegs isn't easy so even though I might try and avoid McDo etc... I still won't get that much vegs (look at how much vegs is served on plate in general). Unless you actually plan to take your own meals, it's near impossible ime.

So yes I think keep silent is a good idea because you don't know what happens a day to day basis.

Fwiw when I saw the consultant re DC constipation, eating vegs was never mentioned Hmm. We were just given laxatives (which didn't work...)

ButchyRestingFace · 06/08/2017 15:35

WTF is wrong with sausage rolls??

Confused
WyclefJohn · 06/08/2017 15:37

In answer to the questions about the diet being typical, although I don't have the impression that fast food is a daily occurrence, I have the impression that junk food is a regular part of the diet. I hope that the clinic can help. It may not be the diet, and they should be able to give pointers

OP posts:
MsPassepartout · 06/08/2017 15:37

You say yourself it's a snapshot.

If they eat like that every day you've got a point, but often people eat differently on days out to the way they eat at home.

PurpleDaisies · 06/08/2017 15:37

Does anyone think eating in butger king is healthy?

People don't eat healthily every single day. That's absolutely fine if they're eating well most of the time.

WyclefJohn · 06/08/2017 15:39

I won't say anything as it's not my place. While I don't think anyone thinks that Burger King is healthy, I think some people think it's fine once a week, some once a month, and some once a year

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 06/08/2017 15:40

You can't say someone doesn't understand healthy eating because you've seen them eat in Burger King once.

WyclefJohn · 06/08/2017 15:42

Very true PurpleDaisies

WTF is wrong with sausage rolls??

Saturated fat in pastry, processed meat. All Ok as part of a balanced diet, but it's not healthy food

MrsOverTheRoad · 06/08/2017 23:23

Butchy did you think sausage rolls were a healthy food?

Genghi · 07/08/2017 08:42

It's actually fine if the BK is treated like a meal instead of a snack. Probably a similar number of calories to a heaping plate of pasta and bolognese, garlic bread, and all the trimmings. And if they're burning a lot of calories everyday then it's fine. It's calories in vs calories out that makes someone fat, nothing else.

Caprianna · 07/08/2017 08:46

Noone can think sausage rolls and Burger King is healthy, but nothing wrong with eating it occasionally and you have to look at peoples overall diet to determine if healthy or not. I love Burger King but onlybeat it maybe once a year.
