to send the DCs lunches in plastic boxes?

DH certainly seems to think so! Older two DC off to sports day 'camp' tomorrow and Tuesday. They usually have school dinners so we don't have lunch boxes for them and I totally forgot they'd need packed lunches until yesterday. We don't have many shops near us so the only thing I could get at such short notice was a couple of those Sistema 'clip and lock' plastic boxes, which I think will be fine. Plus they have the added bonus of being useful for picnics/food storage!

DH thinks I am being totally U and the DCs will never forgive me for not buying them stupidly expensive 'proper' lunchboxes. Oh and that everyone will laugh at them for taking their lunches in plastic boxes. Who is BU here MN jury?

I think they'd be fine.

BertrandRussell · 06/08/2017 10:09

Well, at my ds's secondary school, , a plastic box, the cheaper the better, is the only acceptable container for lunch.

If you don't usually do packed lunches, you may not know the magic trick of freezing cartons of juice or bottles of water and using them as ice packs to keep the lunch cool, and provide a cold drink as well......

NannyR · 06/08/2017 10:09

He is - no one will even notice what their lunch is contained in, you could have just put it in a Ziploc bag.

vikingprincess81 · 06/08/2017 10:11

My dcs have a mix of school lunches and packed, and they use whatever's clean straight out of the dishwasher a variety of things to take their food to school. Dd favours this www.lakeland.co.uk/70286/Sistema%C2%AE-Lunch-Tub?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxI7Nh6HC1QIV16ntCh07EQOaEAQYAiABEgIEYfD_BwE&src=gfeed&s_kwcid=AL!49!3!105382989869!!!!54908606630!&ef_id=WTDURQAAAHTrMnZ0:20170806090803:s because all her mates have the same one
Where ds prefers an actual lunch bag. It really doesn't matter. What does matter is that you don't cave and give them Nutella sandwiches because the other mums will hate you for it! Wink 'but ragamuffin's kids get Nutella in their sandwiches!'

CoughLaughFart · 06/08/2017 10:14

They honestly won't give a shit.

DramaInPyjamas · 06/08/2017 10:19

I've sent my kids with their lunches in Asda carrier bags, old ice cream tubs - all sorts - and nobody cared.

nobody will bat an eyelid at a Siestma box, that's what they are made for!

araiwa · 06/08/2017 10:22

Do it properly and use an ice cream box

AlternativeTentacle · 06/08/2017 10:22

So he has issues with you sending food in food boxes? Really?

Perhaps he needs to take over this arduous task then.

HickDead · 06/08/2017 10:27

Eh? What planet is he on. My DC's use these very boxes for their lunch and have done for years, proper lunch boxes are seriously uncool past yr1 or yr2 of primary apparently. Your DH sounds a bit childish to be honest!

DramaInPyjamas · 06/08/2017 10:33

I think the real issue here is that your DH doesn't forgive his own mother for never having a 'proper' pack lunch box and is projecting his resentment onto your kids.

What is 'proper' anyway? A daft plastic character one?

ButchyRestingFace · 06/08/2017 10:37

DH thinks I am being totally U and the DCs will never forgive me for not buying them stupidly expensive 'proper' lunchboxes

Well, if he feels that strongly about the issue he knows what to do... Hmm

BadToTheBone · 06/08/2017 10:39

Ha ha, does anyone really care about this sort of thing. Whack in the box and send them off.

MrsDoylesTeabags · 06/08/2017 10:47

I secong Bertrand's frozen juicebox tip. Remembering my own son's ability to regularly lose lunch boxes whatever they looked like, I think your option is a sensible one.
Is your DH always such a fusspot?

RagamuffinAndFidget · 06/08/2017 10:47

I feel I should point out (before everyone starts really bashing my DH!) that this is a semi lighthearted thread!

Drama - I think he was trying to say that they (he?) would prefer plastic character boxes, yes.

I said I didn't think they'd care as long as there were crisps inside Grin

Frozen juice carton tip is really good, thanks Bertrand!

Sistema click lock boxes ARE lunchboxes!

Phosphorus · 06/08/2017 10:50

Sustema boxes are totally normal and fine.

Most sports/day camps here ask that you send lunch in a disposable bag. Apparently the keeping track of various boxes is all too much.

megletthesecond · 06/08/2017 10:51

Sistema are the nice lunch boxes. DS is 10 and won't be seen dead with a spiderman one anymore. Much to my annoyance.

Floggingmolly · 06/08/2017 10:52

How old are they? Confused. If they kids were fine without a cartoon character on their lunchbox, I can't understand why it's even on your DH's radar?
The other kids will almost invariably have theirs in disposable plastic bags, btw.

Yika · 06/08/2017 10:58

Your DH is being a bit silly. We've had character boxes but they all got lost. Now I have bought the sistema ones precisely for this purpose. As often as possible however I send my DD's lunch in a small brown paper bag recycled from our purchases at the fruit and veg shop.

RagamuffinAndFidget · 06/08/2017 10:58

DCs are 8 and 6. I showed 6yo hers and she was just pleased because it's the same colour as her water bottle! I think DH was genuinely concerned that other kids might think it was weird and laugh at them.. I don't think they'll be bothered at all!

OP posts:
PinkHeart5911 · 06/08/2017 11:01

A plastic box will be fine, but tbh as it's for the 1 day I would of just sent it in a sandwich bag.

Surely there is nothing outrageous about a plastic box? It's commonly used for packed lunches surely

MrsOverTheRoad · 06/08/2017 11:05

Mine always have the Systema ones! They have for a few years. My DDs are 13 and 9.

paxillin · 06/08/2017 11:18

From the age of 8 they often want a plain one and sistema are great. DH now gets to use the Octonauts lunch box and I have Star Wars, because the kids don't want them and I am too tight to throw them out. My DSis and DBIL are using My little Pony and Peppa Pig ones for the same reason.

BlurryFace · 06/08/2017 11:23

Better to turn up with a "boring" lunchbox than with one that's too "babyish". Hard plastic boxes are a lot easier to keep clean rather than the padded insulated fabric ones you get now - one little hole in the waterproof lining and all that sponge stuff is soaking up apple juice, yoghurt etc.
